Sick and tired of crime
Residents
set up a
monitoring
hub
• By Heidi Slade
RESIDENTS IN some of
Christchurch’s most upmarket
suburbs have launched a plan
to use a decommissioned police
station for a crime monitoring
hub.
The plan is to use the former
Sumner Police Station, from
which they would cover suburbs
from Ferrymead to Scarborough.
The initiative is the brainchild
of a group of residents, who say
they are concerned about the
lack of police presence in their
areas.
The group is calling themselves
the Bays Community
Policing Hub and would answer
phone calls, file reports to police
and support people who are victims
of crime, like burglaries.
The police station is currently
used by the Sumner Community
and Residents Association and
Hub.
“We are supportive of
community coming together
to address local issues and
appreciate concern about
theft in Sumner,” said Sumner
Community Residents’
Association and Hub
community engagement advisor
Charlie Hudson (right).
“We are a very empowered
community and believe that
staying connected, knowing
your neighbours, supporting
each other and being sensible
about keeping your property
and belongings secured is an
effective first step to address the
problem,” she said.
Tell us who
will win
the general
election
WHO WILL win the general
election, and why?
That is the question The Star is
asking readers today as the tempo
builds for October’s vote.
Will it be a National-Act coalition,
or will it be a Labour-led
government for a third term with
the Greens and potentially Te
Paiti Māori.
The latest polls from the Labour
Party’s own pollster show Labour
has well and truly fallen – sitting
at 31 per cent, its lowest point
since 2019.
National rose one point to 36
per cent, making it the first time
National has been ahead of Labour
by five points or more.
It is also the first time the
centre-right has been ahead of the
centre-left by five points or more
since the 2017 election.
So let us know so we can tell our
readers who you think will be the
next government and why.
“IT WASN’T me.”
That was the short answer
this week from the man who
citizen detectives say may know
something about the vandalism
caused at Addington Cemetery.
About 200 metres of lawn was
torn up at the cemetery, and
nearby residents think it was
from a quad bike.
Resident Maddie Brett was
walking through the cemetery
with her husband last Monday
when she chanced on a man
with a quad bike. She took
photos of him as he pushed the
broken-down quad bike away,
posting them to the Addington
Community Facebook page,
and filed an online report with
the police.
From there other residents
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
updated the report with a name
and address of who they believe
the man was. He lives near the
cemetery.
Brett has not heard back from
the police, and it appears they
have not questioned the man
with the quad bike.
The Star visited his house this
week.
“Wasn’t me . . . I haven’t
owned a quad for years,” he
said.
He also said police had not
spoken to him.
Police could not say yesterday
if the man had been spoken to
by police.
“Police will be following
all available lines of inquiry
relating to the incident which
will include any information
provided via 105 reports,” a
spokesperson told The Star.
SOLD: Neville Carter hands
over his son Dan Carter’s
limited edition Adidas boots
to Nairn Electrical co-owner
Steve West after the DC10
charity auction.
Golden boots
score for charity
• By Barry Clarke
DAN CARTER’S DC10 charity
fund will be boosted by about
$14,000 after a pair of the All
Black legend’s boots, and oneoff
Pasikifa day jerseys, were
auctioned.
The Southbridge Rugby Club
hosted the day with the jerseys
worn by the division 1 and 2
sides during their respective
matches on Saturday. The club
has a strong Pacific presence.
Carter, the club’s most famous
son, donated a pair of his limited
edition Adidas boots. They were
secured for $9500 by Nairn Electrical,
which is based in Leeston
and North Canterbury.
The jerseys fetched about
$5500, which after the costs
of running the day and auction
came off, would mean a
good payday for the charity,
Southbridge club manager Chris
McMillan said.
The DC10 fund is supported
by UNICEF and raises money
to deliver disaster-resilient water
and sanitation projects in the
Pacific. Carter, who had been
in Japan for the All Blacks XV
match at the weekend, was very
happy with the auction result,
said McMillan.
“He was absolutely blown
away. He said it was ‘just awesome’.”
Carter’s limited edition boots
are highly sought after. They
have his signature, his cap
number (1034), his test appearances
(112) and his international
record haul of 1598 points on
them.
The DC10 fund was launched
with a 24-hour goal-kicking
marathon at Eden Park in
April last year. Carter kicked
1598 goals to match his test
points as an All Black, helping
to raise more than $340,000.
Nairn Electrical co-owner
Steve West who made the
successful bid for the
boots said it was a
great opportunity
to support the
wider Pacific
community
“and contribute
to
the great
work that
Dan and
the DC10
Fund
do”.
“We
couldn’t
be happier
that
we are
helping to support this worthy
cause,” he said.
West said Nairn Electrical
wouldn’t be keeping the boots.
The company intends to put
them back in an auction so more
money goes to the DC10 fund.
The company is a
long-time sponsor
of Southbridge
rugby and other
clubs in the
Selwyn District
and North
Canterbury.
new chair
The Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board’s
new chair Lyn Leslie was elected
uncontested at Monday’s meeting.
Leslie is the board’s Wairewa
comes after former chair Reuben
Davidson will exit the board
completely before October’s general
election when he will stand as the
Halfway to funding
warm water pool
A campaign to raise $1.4 million
for a warm-water hydrotherapy
pool at Matariki Hornby Centre
has hit the halfway mark. The
Rotary Club of Hornby and
the Greater Hornby Residents’
Association have raised $700,000
so far. The Rotary Club made a
$100,000 contribution, while the
pool received a $300,000 Lotteries
Grant and $300,000 from the Rata
Foundation. The city council will
contribute $2.5 million.
Another grant for
Christchurch Netball
The New Zealand Community
Trust has awarded a further
$300,000 grant to Christchurch
Netball’s new all-weather,
multipurpose venue at Ngā Puna
Agency fights council
• By Tony Simons
GOVERNMENT social housing
provider Kāinga Ora has
opposed the significant changes
the city council has proposed
to reduce the level of housing
intensification in Christchurch.
Kāinga Ora’s submission on
the city council’s Plan Change 14
covers more than 330 categories
and was opposed to or seeking
changes to 80 per cent of them.
The city council wants to limit
the impact of the Governmentimposed
housing density legislation
by protecting access to
sunlight, recognising areas with
poor access to public transport,
and protecting some sensitive
areas.
However, Kāinga Ora is
challenging the city council’s attempts
to limit building heights
and density, protect trees and
plants more, and manage coastal
areas sensitive to sea level rise or
at risk of tsunamis. It also wants
more liberal rules for development
under aircraft flight paths,
around greenways and cycleway
areas, and for landscaping on
properties.
City council reports show it
received 1092 public submissions
on PC14 with Kāinga Ora’s being
one of the biggest.
The Government has pledged
to tackle New Zealand’s housing
crisis but has received criticism
over not building social housing
quickly enough.
At the same time, Kāinga Ora
faced controversy nationwide
for failing to communicate with
communities over proposals to
take over existing housing developments
and build more.
Recent examples in Christchurch
include a private development
in Northwood and another
at Copper Ridge in Halswell,
both of which were purchased
by Kāinga Ora without residents
knowing.
A spokesperson for Copper
Ridge residents said the Kāinga
Ora’s PC14 submission shows it
wants to build more social housing,
no matter the cost.
“This confirms Kāinga Ora
does not care or support the
residents of Christchurch. It
seems in this city, social housing
trumps everyone,” the spokesperson
said.
Said Waipuna
“They are even opposed to
Kāinga Ora general manager urban
planning and design Katja Lietz
said it submits on plan change
proposals to make sure it can
carry out its statutory obligations.
“We support aspects of PC14
that support a well-functioning
urban environment and a compact
urban form. We have encouraged
change, or opposed, aspects
that we believe don’t support these
aspirations,” she said.
Minister of Housing Megan
Woods, Mayor Phil Mauger and
city council head of planning and
consents John Higgins all declined
to comment on the submission,
saying it would not be appropriate
before it is submitted to the independent
hearings panel.
Anyone with an interest in what
has been submitted so far has
until Monday to lodge countersubmissions
HOUSING MINISTER Megan
Woods says a suite of new public
housing units, powered by
solar energy, will save tenants
hundreds on their power bills
each year.
The three-storey Kāinga Ora
housing development in Riccarton,
comprising 20 new units,
enables solar energy distribution
between the units via a rooftop
facility.
It is the first
The homes are
funded through
Fund and cater to tenants in the
over-50 age bracket.
Woods said there were plans
to deliver more than a thousand
public homes over the next two
years.
“We are focused on building
public homes that are warm,
efficient and accessible in wellconnected
area close to transport
and shops and amenities,”
Woods said.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
“These homes have been built
to a high 8 Homestar rating.”
Woods, who also holds the
Energy and Resources portfolio,
said the solar energy system
would save tenants between
$350-400 a year in their power
bills.
“An advantage of the technology
is that it doesn’t restrict the
customers’ choice of electricity
retailer, and there’s no need to
sign up for additional billing
services or platforms, so nothing
changes for customers other
than their power bill.”
Tenants will pay rent based
on 25 per cent of their income
through the Ministry of Social
Development’s Income-related
rent subsidy.
Woods there needed to be the
Disgraced teacher’s
CAUGHT: Disgraced former teacher Taurapa was spotted in
Cheviot on Friday.
PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD
• By Tony Simons
DISGRACED Rangi Ruru Girls’
School teacher Taurapa’s claim
his upbringing in te ao Māori
conflicted with his professional
responsibilities as a teacher have
been condemned – but are still to
be refuted publicly.
The former teacher, previously
known as Connor Taurapa
Matthews, presented a cultural
defence to the Teachers
Disciplinary Tribunal which
found him guilty of having a
sexual relationship with 16-yearold
student, Helena Dray, in 2018
and 2019.
Taurapa claimed his Māori
values placed him in conflict
with his professional responsibilities
towards Dray and he
was supporting her hauora – her
mental, emotional and spiritual
well-being. He also cited Te Aho
Matua (Māori teaching philosophy)
in mitigation.
He had sent her nude images
and romantic poems, and their
relationship involved sex acts in
a car.
Taurapa initially denied the
relationship and claimed he had
done nothing wrong. But he has
now been banned from teaching
and his te reo and cultural consulting
service is no longer being
promoted.
Dray waived her right to anonymity
in the case and has since
spoken publicly about her ordeal,
condemning Taurapa’s claim his
actions were in accord with Te
Aho Matua.
Taurapa’s education and
upbringing were strongly influenced
by tikanga Māori (the
right way to do things) and his
academic excellence and commitment
were recognised as early
as 2012 when he won CPIT’s
Rakatahi supreme award, which
specifically acknowledged his
pursuit of musical excellence and
passion for te reo Māori.
In 2018 when he was 23, he began
teaching at Rangi Ruru and
formed a relationship with Dray
(then 15), grooming her with
attention and gifts, which later
evolved into a highly inappropriate
sexual relationship.
In 2020, he told the Teachers’
TEACH:
Taurapa was
previously
employed
as a teacher
at Spreydon
school Te Kura
Complaints Assessment Committee
there was a “disconnect”
between his Māori upbringing
and understanding of Te Aho
Matua and the professional
boundaries of the teaching
profession, which he described as
“more Pākehā focused”, and he
failed to comprehend the extent
of cultural differences.
In an affidavit Taurapa said
he expected “the Disciplinary
Tribunal will be considering
whether my attempts to provide
support for the hauora and wellbeing
of this student, in the context
of tikanga Maori, breached
my professional obligations.”
In early 2020 he was employed
as a teacher at Spreydon Māori
immersion school Te Kura
Kaupapa Māori Te Whānau
Tahi and was later elected to the
school board.
The Star approached the school
did not respond.
It did host a private whanau
to update families on the
circumstances of the case and
the tribunal decision.
The Star also asked Te
Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura
Kaupapa Māori chief executive
Hohepa Campbell – responsible
for overseeing Te Aho Matua
schools throughout New
Zealand – about Taurapa’s
evidence in mitigation and his
employment at Te Whānau Tahi.
He replied: “Te Runanga Nui
. . . does not have any comment
to make.”
Inquiries by The Star indicate
Māori leaders, speaking
privately, are saddened,
disturbed and upset by what
Taurapa said.
One said Taurapa’s hauora
defence was “bulls***” and they
were sickened by it, but none was
prepared to comment publicly.
Te Aka Whai Ora (the Māori
Taurapa’s claims in mitigation,
the teaching council said the
the disciplinary tribunal are
meet with the Teaching Council
to discuss whether changes
are needed to the investigation
processes for teachers under
investigation for misconduct.
Taurapa chose not to engage
than filing the statement
denying a romantic relationship
Murderer, rapist claims Corrections
• By Anna Leask
MURDERER AND rapist Liam
Reid appeared in the High Court
yesterday claiming Corrections
did not ensure his safety in
prison by wrongly placing him in
a maximum security unit where
he was subjected to a violent
assault.
Reid is seeking a judicial ruling
from Justice Pheroze Jagose that
Corrections acted “illegally”
and “unreasonably” by keeping
him in a maximum security unit
when his prison classification is
lower.
He is serving a life sentence
with a 23-year minimum
non-parole period for raping
and killing Christchurch deaf
woman Emma Agnew in 2007.
He was also convicted of the
rape, attempted murder and
robbery of a 21-year-old student
in Dunedin nine days later.
He is currently incarcerated
at Auckland Prison at
Paremoremo.
Last month Reid claimed he
had been “seriously assaulted” by
another inmate in May.
He claimed the assault
never would have happened if
Corrections had placed him
in the appropriate unit at the
prison.
Court documents reveal Reid’s
PRISONER: Liam Reid appeared in the High Court via
video link.
PHOTO: JASON OXENHAM
current security classification is
“low-medium” – but he is being
held in the maximum security
unit.
Reid said he has “followed
all legitimate reconsideration
procedures for his placement to
be reviewed” but Corrections has
“declined” his request.
“(Corrections) has failed to
consider all options of placement
available for (Reid’s) placement
to be consistent with his security
classification at Auckland
Prison,” his High Court application
stated.
“(Corrections) has not taken
into account all relevant considerations
for (Reid’s) placement to
unit nine at Auckland Prison nor
has (Corrections) considered this
unit as a viable option of placement
for (Reid).”
Reid appeared via video link
from prison yesterday for what
was effectively an administrative
hearing to arrange his next
hearing.
His wife – former lawyer
Davina Reid – was in court in
person to support him.
She asked the court to appoint
her as a McKenzie friend –
someone who attends court in
support of a party that does not
have legal representation.
As Reid’s wife, she said she was
restricted to a phone call once a
week, which meant she could not
assist him with his case and left
him “flying in the dark” and disadvantaged
in terms of preparing
for future hearings.
The Crown accepted Reid was
entitled to help with his case and
did not oppose it.
Jagose agreed and granted her
request. A further hearing will
be held on September 14. It is expected
to take at least half a day.
As the judge adjourned the
hearing, Reid called out to his
wife: “I love you baby”, and
thanked her for her help in
court.
Alongside the assault, Reid
says being in the wrong unit
means he
has been
denied
visits from
his family,
including
Davina.
The pair
married
after she
was caught
smuggling
a cellphone,
Davina Reid
cigarettes, and a lighter to Reid –
her client at the time – while he
was on remand at Mount Eden
Prison. She was struck from the
bar but is currently fighting to
practise law again.
The application outlines how
Reid is “only unlocked every
second day” and is “only permitted
to one five-minute phone call
every two days.
“(He) has not had any family
visits since August 2021,” the application
claimed.
“(Corrections) has prevented
family visits to this unit since
the lockdowns were imposed in
August 2021 in response to the
pandemic.”
Reid said Corrections had
“acted unreasonably” both in
“maintaining his placement
inconsistent with his security
classification” and by “preventing
family visits”.
“(Corrections’) actions are
wrong in law . . . and void,” the
application said.
“(Reid) is materially prejudiced
by (Corrections) abuse of power
which contravenes . . . the New
Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990.”
He is seeking a legal
declaration from the court that
Corrections has “acted illegally
through breaching its statutory
powers” by failing to ensure his
safety and place him in a unit
consistent with his security
classification.
(and) has breached its statutory
duties and acted in bad faith by
preventing all prisoners’ access
to visits from their families and
Last month Corrections could
not discuss Reid’s classification,
citing Corrections’ legislative
obligations under the Privacy
Act 2020 – but said he had
been “offered the opportunity
to move to a different unit and
declined”.
Corrections also confirmed
family visits resumed in
February for Auckland Prison
inmates “held in the lowsecurity
units.
“Due to the additional staffing
requirements for other units in
the prison, high security (units
The Corrections Act
be “denied” if there is an
“emergency in the prison,
the security of the prison is
“There have been a number
they have been denied their
“We are doing everything
we can to prevent this from
happening. However, the safety
of our staff and the people
we manage in prison is our
absolute priority.
“(We) understand the impact
that spending extended periods
“Work is under way at the site
to increase the amount of time
maximum security prisoners
are spending out of their cells
and resume face-to-face visits
with family where it is safe to
Reid has maintained his
innocence since his arrest for
Agnew’s rape and murder and is
working with his wife and legal
against his conviction and
sentence. Currently there is no
“If we are worried about
climate change and our carbon
footprint, then we need to stop
using wooden and paper-based
disposable cutlery and food
containers,” he said.
“These products release more carbon
dioxide into the air when they are being
produced and even as they degrade, and
the increasing level of carbon dioxide in
our atmosphere is the main trigger for the
warming climate.”
Park said biodegradable plastic
is a better option because it has a
lower carbon footprint than wooden
or paper disposable cutlery and
degrades more quickly than
conventional plastics.
But biodegradable
plastic (recycling code
7) shouldn’t be recycled
because the materials are
designed to break down
easily and are too fragile to
reuse safely.
“If biodegradable plastics can
be recycled in an eco-friendly
way for uses that don’t require
strength, then they
could become
the
material of the future,” Park said. “That’s
the direction I think we need to take.”
One of the downsides of biodegradable
plastic is its breakdown is either too slow
or not controlled. Park is investigating
using additives to accelerate this
degradation.
One potential additive he
has been testing is powdered
pounamu, a waste product
from the jewellery carving and
craft industry. Park said early
results using pounamu from
a West Coast supplier show
when a small amount of powder
is added to biodegradable
PLA (polylactic acid) plastic,
it enhances strength, reduces
flammability, and accelerates
Heon Park degradation
“We think this additive could
be added to biodegradable plastic and
used to make milk crates, making them
stronger for carrying cartons of milk.
“If they are lost in the environment,
they would break down in a shorter
timeframe than conventional plastic
products,” Park said.

Arts festival captivates crowds
SUCCESS:
Going Bush was
the Lyttelton
Arts Festival’s
closing act.
THE LYTTELTON Arts
Festival wrapped up on
Sunday, after 10 days
jam-packed with local
talent.
More than 2500 people
attended the festival,
which was a great
success, organiser Skye
Broberg said.
“It was really
wonderful, overall, with
the response we had.”
The second week
featured acts like Lizzie
Tollemache’s Bedtime
Stories for Grown-Ups,
which Broberg said
was magical – and the
Lyttelton Arts Factory
may look to host once a
month.
“It was so wonderful,
everyone was just floating
out on a high,” she said.
Hosted at The Chapel,
the room was filled
with candles and comfy
seating, for Tollemache’s
audience to relax on
while they listened to her
tell folk tales.
“That was special and
something we’re really
looking to develop in the
future,” Broberg said.
While the festival has
only just ended, Broberg
is already thinking about
next year.
She said she hopes to
host the festival for two
weeks and to incorporate
some wearable art.
She also said the
Lyttelton Arts Factory
could look wider for
acts and attract more
performers from
Auckland or Wellington.
Angry mum goes to Ombudsmen
over Mongrel Mob hospital issue
• By Ben Tomsett
A MOTHER is yet to receive
an explanation or apology after
she says Mongrel Mob gang
members put her son’s life at risk
while he was in intensive care.
Anne-Maree Thomas has now
made a complaint to the Ombudsman
in her bid to receive
an explanation
from Christchurch
Hospital.
Following a
15-hour operation
in December,
her son, a
cancer patient,
was recovering
Anne-Marie
Thomas
in the intensive
care unit when
six female
members of the public entered
without wearing masks while
visiting another patient.
The following day, several
patched Mongrel Mob members
arrived to visit the same patient
– all without masks.
Thomas said she has since
been made aware several of the
visitors had verbally abused
hospital staff.
“If they’d taken something up
there, they could have wiped out
Thomas rang the hospital
twice and the police three times.
“The police and the hospital
didn’t do anything. Nothing.
Thomas said.
from the hospital, despite also
calling it several times.
son’s life wasn’t worth jack s**t”
While she was concerned
about allowing the unmasked
gang members in, her complaint
was not with the medical staff as
they were also verbally abused,
she said.
A Te Whatu Ora spokesperson
said the policy across its Canterbury
facilities at that time was
all hospital visitors must wear a
medical paper face mask.
“Staff reminded visitors of this
policy. Our security team was
also available to assist if necessary
and those refusing to wear
a mask were asked to leave,” the
spokesperson said.
“During any policy setting,
police may be asked to attend
the hospital due to incidents
involving members of the public
if required.
“We will not be making further
comment on our security
arrangements to protect our
patients and our staff.”
Thomas’ complaint was now
subject to a Health and Disability
Commission investigation, the
spokesperson said.
Thomas said her son had been
in the clear since the operation
and credited the hospital staff for
saving his life.
Sportsmen take on mental health
• By Briar Allen
FROM THE field to friends
to founders, three former
sportsmen have created a new
not-for-profit group to help
men’s mental health.
BetterMan was founded
by former rugby player
Ged Robinson (Crusaders,
Highlanders), who is the
Canterbury Sports development
programme manager, excricketer
Todd Astle (Black
Caps, Canterbury) and former
footballer and ANZCO Food
digital marketing manager Ryan
Astle (Hokowhitu Zodiacs).
Todd Astle, who runs a mental
skills coaching business called
Innerspin, said they wanted to
collaborate on something and
started throwing ideas around.
“Lads Without Labels reached
out to me to speak at one of
their events and something
just clicked, but we wanted to
do something aimed at men
who are aged between 22 and
50-years-old,” he said.
Astle said they had all strived
to be better at their sports and
wanted to improve other aspects
of their lives. They invited others
to join them on their mental
health and personal growth
journey.
“People can become disconnected
and lose a sense of
themselves. I officially retired
a couple months ago, had my
formal drinks and goodbyes but
I only just left the Canterbury
Whatsapp chat and that was the
hardest thing as that’s your last
tether to that camaraderie and
competition and being updated
on what’s going on.”
BetterMan will put on events
to try and re-create that camaraderie
and build up the community
under their mantra BYC.
“BYC – it’s easy to remember
as it stands for
backyard
cricket, but it
also stands
for betterment,
which is about becoming the
best version of yourself, (and)
yarns, which is having those
conversations and competition
which is about the passion we
have for it and building it up,”
he said.
Their first event will be the
Quiz & Some Other Shizz night
at the Halswell Rugby League
clubrooms at 7pm next Friday.
Astle said it will be more than a
standard quiz night.
“We wanted the kind
of events people could get
excited and charged up about
while having underlying messages
about
mental
health.
“We
wanted
events
that went beyond what you
would normally expect from that
event. We wanted to have those
connections and bring that positive
feeling of competition and
connection with our events.”
Sports commentator Scotty
Stevenson will be the MC and
quiz-master. Astle said Stevenson
has an incredible story to
tell, which he hoped would encourage
others to open up about
their mental health and reach
Scotty
Stevenson
out for support.
They have some
games planned
for the event
which is almost
at full capacity.
“We have
lots of ideas
for the future
that we want to
build off of this
first event. Events in relation to
people’s friendships, parenting
and partners. We hope in
the future to continue to
create these opportunities
as there is so much potential
and break down these
boundaries.”
Astle thanked everyone
who has supported
and helped them start
BetterMan
“We are really amazed
at the support we have
had. It is cool to see the
momentum we have gained
so far, and we can’t wait to
see where this goes.”
ECan commits to solving cruise
ship overload of its bus services
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury
has committed to reducing
the impact of cruise ships on
its buses services, which are
struggling to keep up with
demand.
More than 70 cruise ships
visited Lyttelton Port in the past
12 months, with the next season
due to start in November.
ECan chair
Peter Scott said
they needed to
find a balance
between giving
ratepayers the
services they
needed and accommodating
Peter Scott
the passengers.
“When cruise ships come in,
they overwhelm those services,
which means that ratepayers
can’t get to their destinations
across a number of things –
medical appointments, school
appointments.”
The regional council estimated
it would cost an additional $1
million to accommodate passengers
and keep regular services
operating next season.
But Scott said he did not want
to place the entire burden of that
cost on ratepayers.
ECan hosted a meeting to discuss
the impact of cruise ships
on public transport services on
Monday.
Scott met with Waka Kotahi,
local MPs, Lyttelton Port
Company, the city council and
the Cruise Association, who all
agreed to come up with a solution.
“We agreed that there is an
urgency to move on this prior
to the next season, and that the
community will be involved
in the process to develop some
solutions,” Scott said.
“There’s no absolute hard
decisions come out yet, but we’re
really confident that after we’ve
had the community board meeting
we’ll be on the right path.”
Community consultation was
expected to take place in the next
three to four weeks.
“Time pressure is there. I
mean everyone is keen to try and
move it forward.”
He confirmed discussions over
a cruise ship levy were not on the
table at Monday’s meeting, but
he wanted to ensure the public
they wanted to find solutions.
Cruise ship visitors contribute
about $34m a year to the local
economy.
New Zealand Cruise Association
chief executive Jacqui Lloyd
said the industry welcomed the
collaborative approach.
“The cruise industry is pleased
to be included in the discussion
and collaboration to ensure
that all visitors are seen as good
guests, are respectful of the
local community and that the
presence of passengers adds
to the vibrancy of the city,”
Lloyd said.
Big sales in auction rooms
• By Nikki Preston
THERE WERE several milliondollar-plus
sales in the city’s
auction rooms this week.
One auctioneer said it was
like stepping back to a time
when nearly every property was
swooped up at auction as a lack
of good houses is creating more
competition.
A luxury home in one of the
most sought-after and richest
suburbs soared past its $2.48
million RV selling for an impressive
$3.125 million after Canterbury
buyers went head-to-head
over it.
The property on Ngahere St in
Fendalton was announced on the
market at $3.075 million – but
two bidders continued to battle
it out until the hammer came
down at $3.125 million.
There were four registered
buyers in the room, with three
actively bidding for it for much
of the auction.
Bayleys agent Adam Heazlewood
said good quality,
architecturally-designed homes
are in demand right now, with 81
groups turning up for the opens
homes at Ngahere St.
“Honestly, it was just a lovely
property.”
The house was built in 2019
and designed by Connell
Architecture (now Figure and
Ground) and came with a highend
kitchen, open scullery and
breakfast bar, in-slab hydronic
heating system and gas fireplace.
Fendalton is one of the most
expensive neighbourhoods in the
city, with the average property
value of $1.49 million and its
popularity hasn’t waned much
during the downturn due to its
school zones, proximity to the
university, Riccarton Bush and
the CBD.
All three properties called at
Bayleys Christchurch auction
room last Thursday sold under
the hammer without any pausing
for negotiations. The properties
ranged from $600,000 for an
original three-bedroom, onebathroom
home in Bishopdale
LUXURY:
The house
in Fendalton
soared past its
$2.48 million
RV and sold for
an impressive
$3.125 million
to the $3.125 million Fendalton
home.
“There’s definitely a turnaround,”
Heazlewood said.
At a Harcourts Gold auction
the same week, a bidding war
broke out over a three-bedroom,
two-bathroom home on Somerton
Rise in Westmorland. Bidding
opened at $800,000 before
four buyers pushed it up until
$1.4 million – $220,00 above its
RV of $1.18 million.
There were four of the seven
registered buyers pushing the
price up to $1.4 million after a
total of 37 bids in a fast-paced
auction.
Some 91 people viewed the
home, and they received several
pre-auction offers including
one from a North Island buyer
who had not even set foot in the
home.
Harcourts Gold agent Mark
O’Loughlin said the marketdriven
sales price was above
what his downsizing vendors had
expected, and what he had appraised
the home to be worth.
The major drawcard for the
three-bedroom, two-bathroom
property is that it is a singlelevel
home on a flat section with
spectacular views. It is also in the
Cashmere High School zone.
NEWS 21
Thursday July 13 2023 The Star
like boom times
O’Loughlin said auctions
seem to be doing well because
there is a limited number of
properties for sale and owners
are selling not necessarily to
make money, but because of
a job transfer, school zones,
health and wellbeing, and
some for financial reasons.
At the same Harcourts Gold
auction, there was a fight over
an “as is, where is” character
home on Jacksons Rd, in
Fendalton. Bidding started at
$1.5 million and it finally sold
under the hammer for $2.2
million.
The sprawling five-bedroom,
four-bathroom home, which
has an RV of $3.99 million, was
marketed by agent Cameron
Bailey at people either wanting
to restore or redevelop the 1148
sq m site.
Harcourts Gold auctioneer
Mark Morrison said it was a
“slow and considered” auction
and most of the interest
seemed to be from people
wanting it for the land rather
than saving the house.
Morrison said the auction
felt like those at the peak of the
market in 2020 and 2021 when
almost 100 per cent of properties
sold on the auction day.
“It sort of takes us back to
SECTION: This ‘as is, where is’ property on Jacksons Rd, Fendalton, drew interest
mainly from buyers wanting it for its land.
the heady days of 2020 and
2021 where you do 100 per cent
days or you would sell all but
one. It kind of felt like that.
It was a refreshing day in the
auction room.”
Of the 12 houses called, 11
sold under the hammer and
ranged in price from $530,000
to $2.2 million. The clearance
rate was 91 per cent.
It’s a big jump on the average
56 per cent properties that
have sold at Harcourts Gold
auctions during the first half of
the year.
“It’s only one week in
isolation so you don’t read
too much into it, but there’s
no doubt that the overall vibe
from the agents is that there
are a lot of people out there
looking, there’s definitely more
interest.” Other auction rooms
had clearance rates more in
line with the rest of the year
with eight of the 19 properties
called at Harcourts Grenadier
selling under the hammer.
A Bird That Connects New
Zealand and China
One day in June, I received a thank-you note
from Ms. C to the Chinese government. Ms.
C wrote in the letter “Thank you so much for
putting a protection on the Yellow Sea, in the
area where ‘migrating birds’ stop and feed.
It just filled me with happiness to hear that.
Thank you.”
My colleagues received her at our Consulate
General and learned a lot from her about
bar-tailed godwits, a kind of birds that could
fly tens of thousands of miles without a stop.
Every year, when spring of the southern
hemisphere arrives, thousands of Bar-tailed
godwits embark on their journey to New
Zealand from Alaska, spend a carefree
summer here and fly a long way to China’s
Yellow Sea and Yalu River for the fertile
tidal flats in autumn, when it is spring in the
northern hemisphere. They get recharged
there and muster up courage for the next
journey back to Alaska, where they hatch
their chicks.
Ms. C’s affection for bar-tailed godwits began
with her father, a respected pilot who once
drove a plane alone from UK to New Zealand.
Both are great accomplishments and bear
many similarities: lonely but magnificent
journeys, cruel trials of courage, wisdom
and resilience. She felt the connection in the
unseen world between her family and bartailed
godwits, and decided to spare no efforts
to protect them. Nowadays, thanks to the
concerted efforts of countless bird lovers, cats
and dogs are now banned from many beaches
in South Island, since chasing migratory birds
can cause energy loss and even prevent these
birds from reaching their destination.
This information made us couldn’t help but
felt deeply moved by the vigor and bravery
of the species and the incredible design of
nature.
It is not only Ms. C and New Zealand that
care about the well-being of the godwits,
but also China, which is thousands of miles
away. Throughout the years, China and
New Zealand actively carry out ecological
cooperation and make joint efforts to protect
habitats of the birds that migrate between the
two countries.
Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre to
protect as many as 26 species of migratory
birds and their habitats, including the
godwits. In 2018, the Chinese government
announced a halt to all commercial land
reclamation in coastal areas, so the wetlands
that migratory birds live on can be effectively
protected. In 2019, China put into effect the
eco-redline system as an innovative approach
which included over 30 percent of its landbased
territory for ecological protection.
The approach was selected as one of the
15 classic cases of ecological conservation
by UN. In 2022, China’s National Forestry
and Grassland Administration and New
Zealand Department of Conservation hosted
a launching ceremony on cooperation of
protecting migratory shorebirds. Nowadays,
Kiwis can walk along the tracks of Miranda
foreshore, witness the beauty of the godwits
washing away the dust of long journey and
feeding themselves in the calm and clean
ocean. While in China, people can carry their
cameras to the wetland near the Yellow Sea
and feast their eyes with godwits hovering
over the clear white sand.
Last year when celebrating the 50th
anniversary of China-New Zealand
diplomatic relations, former Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern recalled with full passion:
“The flight of migratory shorebirds between
Aotearoa New Zealand and China is a fitting
example of our connections. According to
Māori legend, one of those species – the bartailed
godwit or Kūaka – played an important
role in guiding early waka to our shores.” Just
as she rightfully put it, bar-tailed godwits have
become messengers of friendship between
China and New Zealand.
Today, China sets foot firmly on the Chinese
path to modernization to deliver a better life
for its people. Chinese modernization is the
modernization of harmony between humanity
and nature. China is committed to sustainable
development and international cooperation in
ecological conservation. We look forward to
strengthening cooperation with New Zealand
in areas such as environmental protection
and green development, continuing to deepen
people-to-people exchanges and friendship,
and building a clean and beautiful world
together.
GARDENING
CROP ROTATION may sound
overly scientific for the ordinary
gardener but it is an important
way of getting the most from
the vegetable garden and, at the
same time, minimising the risk
of diseases such as club root in
cabbages or basal rot in onions,
garlic and leeks.
Designed so crops take
different minerals from the soil
each year, good rotation will take
account of chemical and physical
differences between plants.
The basic rule is never to grow
plants from the same family or
type in the same spot two years
in a row.
Leaving aside perennial
vegetables such as rhubarb, globe
artichokes and asparagus which
stay in the same plot, divide your
garden into three areas.
Make a list of what crops can
be grouped – potatoes, celery,
leeks, carrots, parsnips and
beetroot in one group; peas,
beans (all types), onions and
spinach in the second; and
brassicas (including brussels
sprouts, cabbages, broccoli,
cauliflowers and kohl rabi) in the
Brought to you by
third. Grow them by groups this
coming season.
In the second season, grow
tap-rooted plants (group one) in
plot three, the ground previously
used for brassicas. Put potatoes
and the onion family into
area one and brassicas in the
remaining part of the garden.
Year three sees brassicas in plot
one, tap-rooted plants in bed two
and onions as well as potatoes in
the third section.
Continue this practice in
subsequent years.
How to prune conifers into shape
ALONG WITH ferns and
cycads, conifers have a longer
history than most garden plants.
In the evolutionary scale
they lie between the ferns and
the flowering plants, and it is
probably the remoteness of
their ancestry that makes them
so strikingly different from
flowering trees.
While horticulture tends to
favour deciduous flowering
trees, conifers with their distinct
foliage, growth habit, and colours
make a valuable contribution to
any garden setting especially at
this time of the year.
Conifers range in size from
low ground hugging plants to the
tallest of all living things. Over
the years, along with the natural
occurring species, selected
garden forms have provided a
huge range of shapes, textures
and colours with enough
variation to suit most plantlovers
palates.
Growth rates vary significantly
with some assuming tree-like
proportions in only a matter
of years and others can be
extremely slow growing.
Some confers have
foliage when young that is
different from the mature
tree, macrocarpa, Cupressus
macrocarpa and our own rimu
Dacrydium cupressinum are
good examples of this while
the Bhutan cypress, Cupressuss
cashmeriana is a standout simply
because of its delightful growth
habit.
Conifers can be pruned and
trimmed back successfully but
others resent anything other
than the lightest clipping and
for most, if cut back beyond
any living foliage, they will die.
If you want to have a special
contrasting shape in your shrub
border choose a conifer that
assumes that shape naturally. to
pruning conifers, there are a few
simple rules to follow.
The most important is to
choose the right species or
variety of conifer for your garden
and to plant it in a location to
meet its growing needs.
When pruning is required, the
general rule is not to trim back
past the green growth to bare
wood as they will not recover.
However, there are exceptions.
Most species of juniper, yew and
redwood will re-sprout from
bare branches.
You can check before pruning
by looking for any signs of
growth sprouting further back
along the older wood.
Some conifers will form great
hedges, coping well with being
trimmed back regularly with
hedging shears.
However, to emphasise
the natural form and beauty
that many conifers have, it is
much better, when necessary,
to surreptitiously prune with
secateurs.
Branches of columnar conifers
can splay out – this effect can be
prevented with regular pruning
to reduce weight from the
branches, but if it does occur you
can trim the branch back lightly
then discretely tie the splaying
branch back to the main trunk.
Dead or damaged patches
are often hard to remedy, but it
may be possible by first pruning
out the dead or damaged wood
then training neighbouring
branches to fill the gap by tying
and retying them into position
as they grow. Another beneficial
task is the regular removal of
old plant debris, which can
accumulate inside the plant. This
will create a healthier plant by
letting air and light penetrate as
well as improving their overall
appearance.

Linwood win ‘déjà vu’ as top six
confirmed in Metro Premier
• By Josh Bamber
THE TOP six in the Bascik
Transport Metro Premier
competition is set, following an
enthralling weekend of playoff
rugby.
All six games on the weekend
were close encounters, with the
biggest margin just nine points,
achieved in High School Old
Boys’ 21-12 qualifying final win
over minor premiers University.
Alongside Marist Albion, who
prevailed in the mud at Edgar
MacIntosh Park 26-24 over
Lincoln University, Old Boys’ are
gifted a week off, with both victors
awaiting the winners of this
weekend’s trophy semi-finals,
with Canterbury University
and Lincoln University hosting
Linwood and New Brighton
respectively.
New Brighton reversed their
round-robin result in a win
against Sumner, triumphing
25-21 at Rawhiti Domain to progress,
while Linwood played out
a repeat of last year’s elimination
final against Shirley, once again
winning by a single point in a
thriller, decided by a Josh Jennings’
penalty in the 83rd minute
to edge it 37-36.
• By Will Evans
A REJUVENATED Hornby
Panthers will go into the
Canterbury club rugby league
playoffs with bragging rights
after clinching the premiership
over arch-rivals Linwood Keas.
The Panthers secured the Massetti
Cup with one round still to
go, courtesy of another statement
win, 16-8, over the Keas at Linwood
Park on Saturday.
Chasing their seventh win on
the trot, the Jed Lawrie-coached
Panthers led 10-0 and then 16-4
at halftime thanks to tries from
Zinzan Martin, Champ Betham
TOP SIX: Linwood, seen here playing Christchurch Football Club, has made it into the top
six of the Metro Premier with their one-point win against Shirley on the weekend.
PHOTO: CAMERON CLEMENT
“It was a little bit of déjà vu,”
said Linwood head coach Sam
Jack.
“It’s a great rivalry (with
Shirley) and anyone can win on
the day in finals footy.”
“It was a pretty nail-biting sort
of a game, Shirley played really,
and Muipu Nati, before defending
their way to a decisive result.
The premiership takes a break
this weekend, before resuming
with the final round on July
22, followed by the Pat Smith
Trophy playoffs leading into the
grand final on August 20.
It is likely the two sides will
clash again in the major semifinal,
with the winner securing
a direct berth to the grand final,
and the loser facing the winner
of the likely elimination match
between Halswell and Eastern
Eagles.
For-and-against is almost
certain to deny the Hornets
really well and they took their
opportunities, being up by eight
points with five minutes to play,
anyone could have taken it and
we were really lucky for it to be
us and to move on.”
The win means Linwood head
to Ilam this weekend looking to
from edging the Keas out of
second place, but they cemented
third with a blistering 56-0 win
over bottom-placed Northern
Bulldogs at Halswell Domain on
Saturday.
Centre Nick Evans crossed
for four tries and fullback Ken
Tofilau bagged a hat-trick as the
Hornets posted 11 four-pointers.
Riccarton has left its top-four
run too late, but the Knights
typified an encouraging campaign
with a 24-10 defeat of
fourth-placed Eastern Eagles at
Wainoni Park.
The teams were locked 10-all at
the end of a first-half arm-wrestle,
go one better than last year, with
the goal to celebrate fullback
Anthony Tailua’s 100th game by
moving on to the preliminary
finals in 2023.
“It sets up a different type
game for us than last week,
they’re a young side who use a lot
but the Knights took the ascendancy
after the break with centre
Rikki Bidois completing a double.
In Round 12 of the CRL
Women’s Premiership, Linwood
Keas and Sydenham Swans
continue their march towards
another grand final showdown
with dominant wins on Sunday.
The ladder-leading Keas
defeated Eastern Eagles 62-0 in a
Wainoni Park derby to stay one
point ahead of the Swans, who
powered to a 40-10 victory over
Burnham Chevaliers.
Scorers: Hornby Panthers
16 (Zinzan Martin, Champ
Betham, Muipu Nati tries; Tevin
of width, so it’ll be a game of two
different styles.
“The finals come with a different
pressure – obviously it’s all
or nothing, rather than during
the round robin where you’ve
got next week to work on your
mistakes, so on the day, you’ve
just got to get the job done.”
Elsewhere in the plate section,
Burnside and Sydenham escaped
close qualifying finals at home,
with both games following the
script of the weekend with results
that could have gone either
way.
Burnside held on under sustained
pressure from Christchurch
to ensure their passage
through to the plate semi-finals
with a 20-17 win, while Sydenham
relied on a late penalty from
Jack MacLeod to see off Belfast
24-23.
Burnside now travel to Burwood
Park and Shirley, while
Sydenham have the unenviable
task of heading to Sumner’s St
Leonard’s Square, with spots in
the plate final on the line.
The last match of the round
sees Christchurch host Belfast in
the 11th v 12th playoff, as teams
begin to look to end their season
on a high.
Panthers into playoffs after premiership win
Arona 2 goals) defeated Linwood
Keas 8 (Jerome Taefu, Elijah
Tuhura tries) at Linwood Park.
Riccarton Knights 24 (Richard
Eagles 10 (Kolone Faalilo, Tyrone
Bulldogs partnership ‘hell of a privilege’
CANTERBURY Rugby League
has formed a partnership
with NRL club Canterbury-
Bankstown Bulldogs.
CRL chief
executive Malcolm
Humm
said it would
provide players
and coaches with
“unprecedented
Malcolm
Humm
development
opportunities
and pathways
to progress to
Australia’s elite age-group and
senior men’s and women’s competitions.”
It would potentially lead to
positions with the Sydney club,
he said.
“As part of our 2023-26 strategic
plan, a key goal is that ‘pathway
opportunities are fostered
through strategic partnerships’.
We believe this agreement with
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
is going to have a significant
impact on the development of
players and coaches in Canterbury,
as well as the wider South
Island region.
“To have access to the knowledge
and experience of such a
quality and successful club such
as the Bulldogs is both exciting
and one hell of a privilege.”
The aim is to support players
identified by the Bulldogs to
transition to an Australian competition,
whether it be their Harold
Matthews Cup (under-17s),
SG Ball Cup (under-19s), Jersey
Flegg (under-21s) and Tarsha
Gale Cup (women’s under-18s)
teams, or their Harvey Norman
Women’s, NSW Cup, NRL and
future NRLW premiership
squads.
Said Humm: “Although some
of the detail is still to be worked
through, we have agreed that
Canterbury-based coaches and
players will be recipients of
coaching clinics led by Bulldogs
coaching personnel, whilst both
entities want to ensure that
identified players and coaches
from the Canterbury region have
the opportunity to be immersed
within the club’s environment in
camp scenarios.
“There are numerous ways in
which we can benefit each other,
and we are just excited to get to
this point and commence the
operational plan.”
Canterbury Rugby League
harbours strong links with the
Bulldogs stretching back more
than half a century. Linwood,
Canterbury and New Zealand
Test prop Bill Noonan famously
became the first major signing
made by legendary Bulldogs
secretary Peter ‘Bullfrog’ Moore
in 1970.
– during a 73-game tenure with
the club.
More recently, former Hornby
Northern’s Bronson Reuben and
Hornby’s Sosaia Alatini starred
in the Bulldogs’ recent Harold
in a team coached by former
Halswell stalwart Shannon
Rushworth.
Linwood’s Chelden Hayward,
a member of the Canterbury
recent South Island boys youth
from the Bulldogs’ pathways
programme while being able to
remain here.
Said Bulldogs general manager
of pathways Adam Hartigan:
“Importantly, kids can be afforded
the opportunity to develop
their talent without needing to
be relocated at an early age, and
away from their home, schooling
life and families.
“Rather, this partnership will
support coach development so
that Canterbury junior league
players can access premier
coaching and programs at home,
whilst still being afforded a clear
and visible pathway to the NRL
or NRLW.
“Chelden Hayward is a great
example of how this pathway
model works. With the upskilling
of CRL coaches Chelden
can stay at home, complete his
schooling, and mature before the
need to move Australia.”
Checklist for selling
your home
Make small fixes
Inspect your home with a buyer’s eyes,
and correct the flaws that are most
egregious (if affordable) or can be
relatively easily fixed—from repairing
cracks in the walkways to repainting
dingy walls or oiling creaky hinges.
Select the best real estate agent
For a commission, an agent will take care
of many details you may not want to be
bothered with (placing ads, fielding calls,
making signs, etc.) and bring experience
to the table. To find a good one, ask
friends and relatives, then interview
several candidates.
Set a price
A real estate agent will give you a market
analysis free of charge or commitment.
Ask a few to get a broader picture of the
market. Check out
comparable listings
yourself in the real
estate section of
your newspaper or
on websites. Then
decide whether you
want a quick, easy
sale or the highest
possible price.
Clean & declutter
Weed out excess
throughout furniture, Christchurch
knicknacks, and
“stuff ”—toss it,
M: donate 021 300 it, give 567 E: mike@starmedia.kiwi
it away, sell it at a garage sale, or put
it into storage—so the house seems
more spacious and buyers can imagine
themselves in it.
Stay vigilant about maintenance
Keep the lawn mowed, shrubs trimmed,
gardens weeded, rooms spotless and
clutter-free.
Ready your home for open days
Hide pocketable valuables, display fresh
flowers or bowls of fruit, bake a batch of
cookies for the homey smell, open the
drapes, keep pets out of sight.
Decide whether to do your own
building inspection
It may save you time, especially with
older homes, to identify—and potentially
solve—problems your buyer’s inspection
will discover later.
