CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT: A
business owner and tradies
who performed a citizen’s
arrest by tackling a thief
to the ground after he
allegedly stole motorcycle
parts were told by police to
let him go, while a resident
walking in Addington
Cemetery took photos of a
quad biker in the cemetery
and sent them to police.
WE’VE READ in The Star of good
citizens who have helped police by
catching a thief red-handed and
identifying a person vandalising a public
graveyard.
As police are short-staffed and had
other priorities, they advised to let
the thief go as he had no weapon and
after four days of receiving information
on the vandal, no action had been
taken.
I am sympathetic to the fact we do not
have enough police, yet I wonder if these
good citizens had shared photos of these
people on social media, in an attempt
to deter future violations, if the police
would suddenly be prioritised to correct
the ‘crime’ of social shaming?
Emergency police callouts can take at
least 45min for a response. I feel citizens
need to be able to protect themselves and
their property without fear, otherwise the
criminals win every time.
Crusaders parade
I completely refute D Crampton’s claim
(The Star July 6) the Crusaders have an
“indifference” towards the fans.
I was one of the 500 or so at the airport
when the team returned from Hamilton
victorious again. The players gave of
their time generously. I know the players,
coaches and management and they have
a very fan-centred culture.
We’re
strengthening
our electricity
network
Orion is installing a new 66kV underground power
cable on Ensors Road, between MacKenzie Avenue
and Sullivan Avenue, as part of a major project we are
undertaking in Christchurch city to replace old cables.
Between 16 and 31 July, the southbound lanes on Ensors Road
will be closed intermittently at night, from Ferry Road to Sullivan
Avenue, between 9.00pm and 5.00am. During the day, one
southbound lane will be open past the work area on Ensors Road.
These are essential upgrades, to enhance the resilience and
security of the network. Please allow extra time for your journey
and follow all signage and instructions from our team on site.
Thank you for your patience.
