are cut off from the life of grace and will not be able to<br />
discern properly the difference between the inspirations<br />
and influence of God and the temptations and false lies<br />
of the devil. If you are not in a state of grace, you have<br />
fundamentally said no to God and His plan for your life<br />
and yes to the devil.<br />
Because of the rampant poor catechesis of our time,<br />
I must be absolutely clear on this point. Living in a state<br />
of grace means that you are living without unconfessed<br />
mortal sins and you are following the teachings of the<br />
Church in every aspect of your life. Both the Roman Catechism<br />
and the modern Catechism of the Catholic Church<br />
are very clear on these matters and should be studied by<br />
every serious Catholic. The diagram below reveals the<br />
beginning elements of your foundation in the paradigm<br />
to ascend to greater holiness and the relationship of those<br />
elements with one another.<br />
As I have emphasized in this book, the third foundational<br />
element to authentic discipleship is daily prayer.<br />
The most powerful daily prayers are mental prayer and<br />
the Rosary. Sts. Teresa of Ávila and Alphonsus Liguori,<br />
both Doctors of the Church, consider daily mental prayer<br />
to be necessary for salvation because of the impact on<br />
