Finding Peace in the Storm Instead, I encourage practicing the examen in a way that is focused on God’s redemptive power and mercy, not on your weaknesses and failures. As St. Paul recalled, “He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ . . . For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:9–10). The approach is simple. Every night before going to bed, take five minutes to review your day. Ask the Lord and the Blessed Mother to reveal what you need to know. Then step into your “mental helicopter,” fly up about twenty feet, and then fly back to when you got out of bed in the morning. Then slowly fly over your day from morning to evening, asking two simple questions: What have I been able to do, by the grace of God, that honors Him and others? When you discover these things, express praise and thanksgiving to God. This can be as simple as “Thank You, Lord, for the ability to pray according to my plan of love when I didn’t feel like doing so.” How have I failed to honor God and others? When you discover these things, continue to pray in thanksgiving, something like this: “Thank You, Lord, for revealing my sin to me so that I can be forgiven and strengthened to overcome this sin in the future. Thank You for Your promise and provision of forgiveness and strength against sin and temptation.” Now, this may seem very simple — and it is! However, don’t be fooled. This powerful practice is no less important to the Christian than a compass is to the man seeking a way out of the wilderness. It keeps you awake 108
What Next? to your progress on the narrow way to Heaven, and it helps ensure that you stay on the path. It also perfects your trust in God and deepens your understanding of yourself as a beloved child, wholly dependent on His help and mercy for every good in your life. 109
