NEWS 12 The North Canterbury News, July 13, 2023 Getting together to be young at heart again By DAVID HILL Local Democracy Reporter Agroup of Kaikōura locals are helping retired men to reconnect with their community. The Kaikōura Community Shed is open to everyone, but on Thursday mornings it opens for older men only. Te Hā oTeOra Kaikōura Health community support worker Belinda ‘‘Blou’’ Rickerby keeps an eye on the group, offering support when needed. Known as ‘‘Blou’s Group’’, each session begins with acuppa and ayarn. ‘‘And then there is ajob for everybody, whether it is painting or cutting, everybody helps,’’ Ms Rickerby said. ‘‘Often when men stop work they lose contact with people, so it is about getting men back together so they can be boys.’’ For the last five years the group has been building predator traps for various organisations, including Environment Canterbury, to help protect native birds. ‘‘We probably do abunch one or two times ayear, depending on what they are doing,’’ she said. Other projects have included building penguin hutches to provide asafe place for the little penguins at South Bay and weta homes to shelter birds from mice in the Hurunui district after the 2016 earthquake. They also make coasters with Kaikōura images for local businesses to sell as souvenirs. There were usually about 14 to 16 men turning up each Thursday, and the shed is open to other people on other days. ‘‘People can bring projects down to work on or we can give them ajob to do,’’ Ms Rickerby said. ‘‘We go out and source activities for them. ‘‘We have equipped the shed for the local community with what tools they Blou’s Group’. .. The Kaikōura Community Shed’s Thursday morning men’s group. want through local community support.’’ On Tuesday mornings the shed opened up for an alcohol and drug counselling group. ‘‘They come in and do two to three hours and we give them something else to do, and they gain some life skills,’’ she said. Night classes were also being considered in the shed in the future to make it more accessible. The Kaikōura Community Shed was located behind Te Hā o Mātauranga (Kaikōura Education Trust) in Ludstone Road. Te Hā also used the shed to run courses for local youth. The shed was coordinated by Darryl McRobie and Trevor Carpenter. ‘‘We want more people to use the community shed,’’ Mr McRobie said. ‘‘It is great to keep the oldies coming in and doing some work. ‘‘It is not about what they make, it is about what they do when they are here.’’ He said the shed was keen to extend what it offered for the community and was open to ideas.
