SHOW: Te Aratai College students have been working hard to bring Grease to the stage.
Grease first show in
new auditorium
A WOP ba-ba lu-bop a wop
bam boom! Te Aratai College’s
performance of Grease opens
tonight and runs until Saturday.
It will be the first show in Te
Puna, the new 650-seat auditorium,
since the school’s rebuild.
Te Aratai College head of
drama department and director
Samantha Boyce Da-Cruz said
it is a chance for everyone to
connect.
“It’s a chance to connect with
the kura (school) and celebrate
our amazing akonga (students)
who are putting in so much
effort to put on such an amazing
show,” she said.
The new space will be able to
host a multitude of events for
both the school and the wider
community, with Grease
being the first of many performances.
The students have been working
around the clock to rehearse
and prepare the musical, with hit
songs like We go together, You’re
the one that I want and Greased
lightnin’ all performed by a
talented cast and accompanying
band.
Student Connor Armstrong,
who plays lead Danny Zuko,
said the injection of performing
arts into the east side of
Christchurch is like a breath of
fresh air.
“It helps us grow stronger and
celebrate hard work as well as
grow a better sense of the world
around us,” he said.

Lyttelton.
Supermarket hit
in crime spree
FRESHCHOICE IN Lyttelton
was one of seven business
targeted by ram-raiders during
a crime spree across greater
Christchurch at the weekend.
The incident was captured
on CCTV cameras inside the
store, showing four people
breaching the shop’s entrance
with a car and running into
the store in an attempt to steal
cigarettes.
It appeared the thieves were
intending to loot cigarettes from
a locked cabinet. They were
unsuccessful in their attempts
and instead left the shop with
considerable damage.
The supermarket’s owner,
Rob De Thier, said the offenders
threw bottles of wine onto the
ground out of frustration for
not getting the cigarettes.
“It’s a sad indictment on
society,” he said.
“I might put a couple of
bollards up, but again it’s sad I
have to look at doing that.”
