PREBBLETON couple Kim
and Paul Strange are “very
excited” to have made the finals
of the World of Wearable Art
competition.
“I think I ran out of the room
and told my boss,” said preschool
teacher Kim, who learned the
news via email while at work at
the Hatch Early Learning Centre
in Prebbleton.
They are among six finalists
from Canterbury, and 120
designers from around the world,
who will see their creations on
Rural land to ease growth pressures
A LARGE undeveloped lot in
West Melton has been placed
on the market amid increased
pressure to free land for
residential development.
Comprising 10.743ha of rural
zoned land at 664 Weedons
Ross Rd, the property is
currently subject to a plan
change application which
would see it rezoned as general
residential to facilitate lowto-medium-density
housing
development.
Bayleys
lifestyle and
residential
salesperson
Chris Jones said
the property
is offered to
the market
Chris
Jones
at a time of
extraordinary
growth across
the district.
“Recent estimates from the
Selwyn District Council see
current growth in the realm of
4.9 percent per annum, which
makes Selwyn the fastestgrowing
district in the country
behind Queenstown-Lakes,” he
said.
“The SDC has identified
the need to build more than
12,000 new homes over the next
decade to accommodate this
demand.
WOW finalist spot for drone-inspired entry
CREATIVE: Kim and Paul
Strange with their 2019
WOW entry, Bra-noculars.
However, the key will be
doing this efficiently by utilising
current infrastructure and
balancing the need for
housing against the desire
to protect highly-productive
land.”
The Weedons Ross Rd
property, which features two
titles of 6.69ha and 4.05ha is
being sold by deadline private
treaty.
Said Jones: “We’re seeing
more significant pressure placed
on local housing capacity as
an increasing proportion of
families relocate to lifestyle
areas.
“Post-earthquake movement
has helped, but there is also
increasing demand from interregion
migration, with buyers
from Auckland and Wellington
finding value here.
“We need only look to the
explosive growth in nearby
Rolleston to demonstrate the
appetite for housing, providing
a strong development case for
rezoning the property to a
higher density for residential
development.”
Jones said confirmation
of the property’s rezoning is
anticipated before August 20.
If successful, it would provide
for more than 118 lots with
a minimum average section
size of 650sq m under current
planning stipulations.
LAND: More than 10ha of land would come available if
rezoned from rural to general residental.
The couple’s garment was
inspired by their 21-year-old son
Finn’s passion for drones.
Abiding by WOW rules, the
Stranges cannot describe their
garment or say what category it
is entered in. However, they can
say what materials were used to
create it and their inspiration.
Finn helped with the materials,
producing some with a 3D
printer.
Drone parts and lights are
also involved, the latter being
made possible due to Paul’s background
as an electrician.
Paul said he and Kim will only
be able to “see if it flies” at the
stage presentation itself would
in terms of how their garment
is received by the audience and
judges.
“It’s very different, I don’t
think it (drone parts) has ever
been used before. You have to
think outside the square with
WOW really, and look at different
materials and what will make
an impact on stage,” Kim said.
“It’s really cool to see it on
Fast-track
consent for
Faringdon
Just over 1100 new
homes may be added
to the Faringdon Oval
development in Rolleston
after a fast-tracked resource
consent was approved.
Hugh Development Ltd
intend to initially add 684
residential units to the
oval, then later 462 units,
which includes terraces and
apartments. The company
has already built more than
2000 homes on the oval.
The development will cover
about 70ha and includes
a large crescent shaped
public space.
stage, it kind of makes all the
work you put into it worthwhile,”
she added.
The couple have been in the
competition before, also having
made the finals in the bizarre bra
category in 2019. Their creation
was a pair of oversized binoculars
with acrylic pieces and
lights, resembling stained glass
windows.
The finalists will go through
two further stages of judging,
in which they are assessed on
stage, before the winners are
announced at the WOW awards
night on September 22.
