Month’s worth of rain<br />

While the heavy rains over the weekend<br />
of 22 July mercifully did not reach the<br />
disaster level of the flooding in Canterbury<br />
2<strong>02</strong>1 or the North Island 2<strong>02</strong>3, they were<br />
serious enough to make rural life pretty<br />
grim for the humans and animals affected.<br />
Soggy livestock stoically waited it out.<br />
Flooded and muddy land took longer to<br />
dry, making conditions difficult over the<br />
following week for all beings and vehicles<br />
using it.<br />
The MetService told us that over a<br />
month’s worth of rain fell in Canterbury<br />
in 36 hours – but what does that mean,<br />
in a context where we’ve experienced so<br />
many 1-in-10, 1-in-50 and 1-in-100 year<br />
events in the last decade? NIWA predicts<br />
that, unless real reduction happens in<br />
greenhouse gas emissions, Canterbury’s<br />
winters could be 40% wetter by 2090.<br />
I don’t think anyone’s excited by the<br />
prospect of 40% more of this!<br />
