Thursday August 17 2023 3 Toy library to find new home • By Briar Allen THE SALE of the building it resides in was not the early birthday present the Papanui Toy Library had in mind. The library will celebrate its 30th birthday next month and is now on the hunt for a new place to call home. Library supervisor Natalie Sisson who has been with the library for about 10 years said it has been based in a garage for the past six years, which is damp and the insulation is not great. “It is pretty miserable in winter but good in the summer. We are looking for a space that is 60-80 square metres,” she said. Sisson said a nice, warm classroom would be ideal with a car park which can fit at least 10 cars at a time. “As well as being under $10,000 a year, which is the big problem. We are a not-for-profit group, we get funds through grants and our own fundraisers and we have just under 1000 toys all boxed and bagged that need to be stored.” She said the library has been told by the landlord nothing is going to happen in the next nine months. “But there are already people looking, it is very stressful. “It would be nice to be moved by the end of the year at the latest.” The toy library currently provides 67 members with the option of loaning out up to eight toys at a time for up to two weeks. “People pay a membership FAREWELL: The Papanui Toy Library’s current premises on Cavendish Rd. fee, with the duty membership being slightly cheaper as people are required to come volunteer occasionally. “We currently have 41 duty memberships and 26 non-duty memberships. You tend to lose memberships when you move and it can take a while to build it back up,” she said. Sisson said the library is sustainable and good for low-income households, as it saves people so much money. “It makes a huge difference to those who cannot afford new toys every time, we have grandparents who have grandchildren who visit from overseas, members get to know each other, it is a real community orientated place.” • Visit the Papanui Toy Library Facebook page to contact the team about potential new locations In Brief RESIDENTS ASKED TO REPORT POTHOLES Innes Ward city councillor Pauline Cotter is encouraging people to use the Snap Send Solve app to report potholes or footpath damage. Cotter said she has noticed potholes re-emerging after rain has fallen and damaged roads and footpaths appearing around housing construction sites. Reporting the damage helps the city council stay on top of the repairs, she said.
