Burnside water fill
station to close

New venue for art
society’s exhibition
THE SUMNER Art Society is
holding its annual exhibition this
weekend.
Previously held at the
Redcliffs Bowling Club, it
will be at the Mt Pleasant
Yacht Club this year for
the first time.
The clubrooms are
where art society members
meet each Wednesday
morning to work on
their art, enjoy companionship
and share creative ideas.
Well-known members who will
be exhibiting include Adrienne
Pavelka, who works with watercolours;
Maxine Burney, who
has a studio at The Arts Centre
and paints with acrylics; and
award-winning artist
Geri Parawa, whose
medium is ink, which
she uses to create fluid,
vibrant artworks.
One of her Parawa’s
works will be raffled
at the exhibition
(the other prize is a
hamper).
• The free exhibition is
open from 10am to 5pm
on Saturday and Sunday.

THE UNCHLORINATED water
fill station at Burnside Park will
be permanently closed to comply
with drinking water laws.
On May 9, Government water
regulator Taumata Arowai
advised it intended to decline
the city council’s first chlorine
exemption applications.
Chlorine has since been
introduced to all water supply
zones in Christchurch and
Banks Peninsula. This is a
necessary step to comply with
the Water Services Act and the
associated rules and standards
for community water supplies.
Taumata Arowai has now
confirmed that the requirement
to chlorinate extends to the city
council’s unchlorinated water fill
stations.

Smith said the city council has
a responsibility to comply with
Government legislation.
“We know this will be
disappointing for some people,
but we have no choice in the
matter – we must comply with
the law – so the stations will
be permanently closed in the
coming days.
“Making sure Christchurch
and Banks Peninsula residents
have access to safe and reliable
drinking water is our number

one priority.
“Chlorine has been used
safely all around the world
for about 120 years. It keeps
millions of people all over the
globe – including in most of New
Zealand – safe from waterborne
illness.
“If you are concerned about the
taste of chlorine, you can keep
drinking water in an open jug
in the fridge. The chlorine taste
will dissipate naturally over a few
hours,” Smith said.
Chlorine and any associated
by-products can be removed by
using a granulated, activated
carbon (GAC) filter. These are
available from hardware supply
stores and water filter companies.
The city council recently
provided feedback on the
Taumata Arowai draft exemption
decisions.
“In late June we sent Taumata
Arowai feedback on the draft
exemption decisions. They will
now consider our feedback before
issuing a final decision.
“We not expecting the final
decision to change due to the
nature of feedback received in
the drafts,” Smith said.
The fill station at New Brighton
will also close.
