PLANS TO make sections of busy 

Fendalton roads safer for all road 

users are out for public feedback. 

The proposal to upgrade 

sections of Glandovey Rd and 

Idris Rd between Fendalton Rd 

includes installing new pedestrian 

refuge islands, speed cushions, 

cycle lanes, and kerb build-outs. 

City council transport planning 

and delivery manager Jacob 

Bradbury said the project aims to 

address safety concerns brought 

to the city council’s attention 

by the Glandovey Idris Strowan 

Residents’ Association. 

Pedestrian refuge islands are 

proposed for three locations 

on Glandovey Rd, and two on 

Idris Rd to make it easier for 

pedestrians to cross the roads. 

Under the plan, speed cushions 

will be installed to slow vehicles 

before the crossing points. 

“Speed cushions are good for 

this area, as they force ordinary 

vehicles to slow down to go over 

them, while heavy vehicles such 

as buses, fire engines and 

ambulances are typically wide 

enough to straddle them,” 

Bradbury said. 

“This minimises the noise and 

vibration issues that sometimes 

occurs from these types of 

vehicles travelling over traffic 

slowing features.”

project

A PASSION for pups and 

running has led to a new 

business project in the 

Merivale area. 

Chloe Donald, 12, 

has taken two of her 

interests to create a dog 

running programme 

to help keep dogs fit 

while working off their 

energy. 

Chloe said it is a 

part of her ‘passion 

project’ at Selwyn 

House School, 

which they have 

been working on 

since term two. 

“We list our 

passions and 

from there we 

pick our top 

three and 

come up with business ideas 

and I chose running dogs,” 

she said. 

She said the programme 

aims to run dogs whose 

owners may be too busy to be 

able to do it themselves – and 

the dogs may be stuck inside 

all day due to the owners 

being at work. 

“If you’re really busy during 

the day and your dog is 

cramped in, I can take your 

dog and run with it to get rid 

of all its energy.” 

Chloe is a competitive 

runner. She finished third in 

the 800m and fourth in the 

1500m at the South Island 

Colgate Games in Timaru in 

January. 

“I like dogs and I am a 

confident runner; I am 

looking forward to running 

heaps of dogs.”

Toy library to find new home

THE SALE of the building it 

resides in was not the early 

birthday present the Papanui Toy 

Library had in mind. 

The library will celebrate its 

30th birthday next month and is 

now on the hunt for a new place 

to call home. 

Library supervisor Natalie 

Sisson who has been with the 

library for about 10 years said it 

has been based in a garage for 

the past six years, which is damp 

and the insulation is not great. 

“It is pretty miserable in winter 

but good in the summer. We are 

looking for a space that is 60-80 

square metres,” she said. 

Sisson said a nice, warm 

classroom would be ideal 

with a car park which can 

fit at least 10 cars at a time. 

“As well as being under 

$10,000 a year, which is 

the big problem. We are a 

not-for-profit group, we get 

funds through grants and 

our own fundraisers and we 

have just under 1000 toys 

all boxed and bagged that 

need to be stored.” 

She said the library has been 

told by the landlord nothing is 

going to happen in the next nine 

months. 

“But there are already people 

looking, it is very stressful. 

“It would be nice to be moved 

by the end of the year at the 

latest.” 

The toy library currently 

provides 67 members with the 

option of loaning out up to 

eight toys at a time for up to two 

weeks.

low-income households, as it 

saves people so much money. 

“It makes a huge difference 

to those who cannot afford 

new toys every time, we 

have grandparents who have 

grandchildren who visit from 

overseas, members get to 

know each other, it is a real 

community orientated place.”

She said one of the challenges 

she has faced so far was figuring 

out how to advertise her 

programme to the area. 

“My mum is an advertiser and 

I talked to one of her co-workers 

which was quite helpful, she 

talked to me about the best way to 

advertise, who my target audience 

is. I ended up doing a letterbox 

drop of my flyers. I have really 

enjoyed advertising and creating 

the flyer.” 

Chloe will be charging $10 for 

half an hour and $17 for an hour 

with a portion of the proceeds 

being donated to the SPCA. She

PLANS TO upgrade a section 

of Innes Rd have been approved 

by the Waipapa Papanui-Innes- 

Central Community Board. 

The renewal project will get 

underway in December between 

Mersey St and the shops past 

Philpotts Rd. 

Improvements include 

upgrading the carriageway and 

sections of kerbs and footpaths, 

making it safer for people 

travelling to school, work or 

across the community. 

Raised platforms will be 

installed at existing zebra 

crossings at Mairehau Primary 

School and St Francis of Assisi 

School, improving safety and 

accessibility by slowing down 

vehicles at crossing points. 

Additionally, kerb build-outs 

will be introduced at Ethne St, 

Nancy Ave and Kensington Ave 

intersections. 

A central island will be 

installed at the Thames St 

intersection and the existing 

central island at Philpotts St will 

be replaced. 

Community board chair 

Emma Norrish said with 

two schools in the area, it is 

important for children to safely 

travel within the area. 

“Innes Rd is a busy route with 

around 15,000 vehicles travelling 

along the stretch each day. 

These improvements provide 

the opportunity to address a 

lot of safety concerns for the

Stop control signs will also 

be introduced at Thames St,

safety improvements, to allow 

buses to enter and exit existing

holding its annual exhibition this

THE UNCHLORINATED water 

fill station at Burnside Park will 

be permanently closed to comply 

with drinking water laws. 

On May 9, Government water 

regulator Taumata Arowai 

advised it intended to decline 

the city council’s first chlorine 

exemption applications. 

Chlorine has since been 

introduced to all water supply 

zones in Christchurch and 

Banks Peninsula. This is a 

necessary step to comply with 

the Water Services Act and the 

associated rules and standards 

for community water supplies. 

Taumata Arowai has now 

confirmed that the requirement 

to chlorinate extends to the city 

council’s unchlorinated water fill 

stations. 

Head of Three Waters Brent 

Smith said the city council has 

a responsibility to comply with 

Government legislation. 

“We know this will be 

disappointing for some people, 

but we have no choice in the 

matter – we must comply with 

the law – so the stations will 

be permanently closed in the 

coming days. 

“Making sure Christchurch 

and Banks Peninsula residents 

have access to safe and reliable 

drinking water is our number

one priority. 

“Chlorine has been used 

safely all around the world 

for about 120 years. It keeps 

millions of people all over the 

globe – including in most of New 

Zealand – safe from waterborne 

illness. 

“If you are concerned about the 

taste of chlorine, you can keep 

drinking water in an open jug 

in the fridge. The chlorine taste 

will dissipate naturally over a few 

hours,” Smith said. 

Chlorine and any associated 

by-products can be removed by 

using a granulated, activated 

carbon (GAC) filter. These are 

available from hardware supply 

stores and water filter companies. 

The city council recently 

provided feedback on the 

Taumata Arowai draft exemption 

decisions. 

“In late June we sent Taumata 

Arowai feedback on the draft 

exemption decisions. They will 

now consider our feedback before 

issuing a final decision. 

“We not expecting the final 

decision to change due to the 

nature of feedback received in 

the drafts,” Smith said. 

The fill station at New Brighton 

will also close.

Lifestyle leads to world champs

FOR BROOKE Bennett, 

swimming has always been a 

lifestyle. 

Before she started to swim 

competitively, Bennett can 

remember going down to the 

pool often with her family 

members. 

“It’s always been in the family. 

“My nana used to always 

take me down to the pool, but 

I mainly got into it because 

my sister used to swim 

competitively,” she said. 

Just six years after starting 

to swim competitively, the 

year 12 student at Villa Maria 

College is off to the junior world 

championships in Israel next 

month. 

She managed to reach what 

Swimming New Zealand calls 

a “silver” time in the 1500m 

freestyle event at the national 

age group championships in 

April to qualify for next month’s 

meet. 

The 16-year-old is the only 

South Island-based swimmer 

selected in the seven-strong 

team, and is “really excited” to 

represent New Zealand for the 

first time. 

“I really want to do well in my 

swims, and hopefully get some 

personal bests – but mainly I 

just want to enjoy the

200m, 800m and 1500m freestyle 

events at the six-day meet. 

She goes into the meet

Although Bennett’s specialist 

races are the longer-course 

freestyle events, she admits 

she “likes to do some 

breaststroke every now and 

then.” 

The junior team will travel to 

Dubai on Sunday for a two-week 

camp before the meet begins on 

September 4. 

It will be Bennett’s first time 

travelling further than Australia 

to compete, as well as the 

biggest meet she has ever 

competed in. 

Bennett will also represent 

New Zealand in the Queensland 

State Championships in 

December before heading to 

Sydney for the New South 

Wales open water 

championships. 

Although Bennett wants 

to wear the fern again after 

this year, she is focused on her 

short-term goals rather than 

the pinnacle events like the 

Commonwealth or 

Olympic Games. 

“I mean it’s definitely a 

possibility, but I don’t want to 

put that pressure on me. I just try 

to be my best. 

“And if that means I go to 

the Commonwealth Games or 

Olympics, that’s how it is.”

Ground moisture barrier 

under low sub-floor 

Now with the colder and wetter weather on 

its way, home owners are focusing on ways 

to make their homes comfortable, warm 

and healthy for their families throughout 

winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects 

many of our older properties which suffer 

from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier. 

In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many 

people have relocated to homes that suffer 

from rising damp which can be associated 

with health problems. Independent tests have 

shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise 

from the ground and enter a house every day, 

leading to mildew, mould, condensation and 

musty smells. Moulds can produce various 

allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and 

very young are especially vulnerable. 

Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

damp soil and had this to say: Condensation 

on the underside of a timber floor can occur 

where the floor is suspended over damp 

ground and the inside air temperature falls 

close to the crawl space air temperature. 

Much energy is required to vaporize moisture 

that penetrates the structure. By avoiding 

underfloor condensation, foam concrete can 

reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
