ADesignatedWatersLicence hasbeen introducedthis season as amanagement tooltobetter protectNew Zealand’smore fragile fisheries, which areofteninthe backcountry. Fish&GameNZchief executive Corina Jordansaysaround 100,000 anglersare expected to go freshwaterfishing throughout thecountry. Ms Jordansaysthe newDesignated Waters Licence will see Kiwi anglers get a fairer share on some of the waterways that Fish&Game’s research hasshownare subject to too muchpressure around two percent of the country’s rivers. ‘‘The newlicence category willhelpus manage anglingpressure by spreading angling effort around, so that it isn’t concentrated in certain areas,which detracts from theangling experience and alsohas the potential to negativelyimpact the fisheries,’’ she says. Overthe past10years, Fish&Gamehas receivedincreasingcomplaintsfrom residentand nonresident anglers regardingovercrowdinginasmall number of fisheriesthatwill now be managed through the DesignatedWaters Licence. ‘‘Our research and monitoring shows thatasmallpercentageofnonresident anglers willintenselyfish alocal area,not onlyputting pressure on thefishery,but alsodisplacingother anglers. ‘‘We’ve implementedthisnew fisheries managementtooltohelpaddress that imbalance.’’ In some fisheries,angler use has gone from aroughly 5050 residenttononresidentsplit (in the early 2000s),toan 8020 split favouring nonresidentanglers. In most cases,pressuresensitive fisheries, now managed through the DesignatedWaters Licence, share common features.The rivers have very clear water, offer excellent sightfishing, holdlarge average size trout,have high scenicvalue, and areoften located in a wildernessorbackcountry setting. NEWS North Canterbury News, August 24, 2023 New venue for Wearable arts BY SHELLEY TOPP Anew venue for the North Canterbury Wearable Arts Show will provide an ‘‘exciting bonus’’for those attending,an organiser Jane Anderson says. The new venue for the region’s annual premier fashion event, at the Rangiora Baptist Church auditorium,means‘‘we can at last have arunway leadingtoan extended stage’’, she says. ‘‘This will allow the audience to be wrapped aroundboth the stage and runway giving them an upclose encounterofeach costume. ‘‘It adds to agreat atmosphere on the night.’’ The showcase of wearable art which is afundraiser for the Oxford AreaSchool, provides acreative opportunity for students and adults to display their work in atheatrical atmosphere. There will be live music, judges, a compere and prizes. The show was held last year at the Rangiora Town Hall, but another venue was sought thisyear after remodelling changesatthe town hall meant there was insufficient changing room space for the show’s contestants. ‘‘This yearthe challenge was to find a large enough venue in Rangioratohold at least 400 people and spaces big enough to accommodate 40plusentrieswith their large creations,’’Jane says. ‘‘Wefounditinthe Rangiora Baptist Church Auditoriumalong EastBelt, which has the changingroom space and capacity to seatupwards of 500 people. ‘‘Itisareally lovely venue.’’ The show is being heldonSaturday September9,from 7pm to 9.30pm, with doors openingat5.45pmfor the Early Access tickets which allows ticketholders to choose theirseats along the stage and runway. Bathurst defribulator fundraiser at Ashley By ROBYN BRISTOW Bathurst, next month, will take on a few new twists and turns at North Canterbury’s Ashley Hotel. Asmall group has decided to combine the Australian motor racing event for Supercars, which will be showing on the big screen, with a fundraiser for adefribulator for the village and surrounding area. Bart Ingram says Leeanne Jenkins, the hotel proprietor, has given the premises over for them to run the fundraiser during the six hour race on Sunday, October 8. She says it’s all part of helping the community to raise funds for such an important piece of equipment. It is open to people who buy achit for $25, which gives them a$10 bar tab, barbecue food, nibbles, alate afternoon tea, and raffles, and to be in to win spot prizes and alucky draw. Bart says the event is limited to 100 tickets, and the funds raised from the sale of chits will go toward a defribulator. There is anoon start as the race gets under way and will end when the racing finishes around 7pm. Bart says they couldn’t have got the fundraiser off the ground without the support the proprietor who was keen to help the community, and be part of the community event. ‘‘Tickets are already selling well,’’ he says. Alongside the fundraiser there will be aniche car show with people being encouraged to get their projects out of the garage, sharpen them up and drive them along to display outside the hotel from 10am. Bart says other events are being considered to help pay for the vital equipment, with adefribulator, with three years of free maintenance costing around $5000 all up. He says to access the defribulator, which will be outside the hotel, people will need to dial 111 to get an access code. This also ensures an ambulance is on its way.
