It isn’t that C asey Jackson ’08 tries to be wrong, but sometimes he says he actually “enjoys” it. That happens most often in the chemistry laboratory where ideas are tested to determine whether or not they are correct. Right results may count more than whether the hypothesis itself proved true. “Science expects you to be wrong,” Casey said. “It’s a way to learn something.” Learning what isn’t correct can be as crucial as hitting on the right concept in the first place. Though he embarked on a chemistry major just a year ago, Casey soon found himself in the web of one of the greatest scientific endeavors of our time, the attempt to understand the workings of anti-cancer treatments. gREYhoUND CLUb Robert E. Working on an independent study with assistant professor Stephen Dunham, Casey has been exploring the properties of a cancer-fighting compound called 6-thioguanine in an effort to grasp the conditions under which it best functions to kill cancer cells. The agent itself has been utilized to combat a childhood form of leukemia. Its ability to destroy cancer cells has broadened its potential usefulness in stifling other kinds of malfunctioning cells. The compound alters the DNA of diseased cells against the body’s attempts to correct these errors, causing the cells to die rather than continue to divide. Casey loves the challenge and affirms the scientific premise that achieving solutions means eliminating the mistaken notions. That took him to psychology, biology, philosophy, and a course in nursing. He’d like to expand his independent study into a senior Honors project because, he said, “I wouldn’t be happy leaving it half finished.” The basic trial-and-error method of science has enhanced his experience. Recently, he noted, a hypothesis he’d put forward proved to be “all wrong.” He’d arranged to mix two chemicals and predicted a turbulent reaction. It didn’t happen that way at all.
