Like most of her peers—and myriad generations before her—K ristin Smith ’ 0 7 made frequent excursions into fantasy land in her childhood. One of the features of this imaginary garden was the fairy tale, the kind of story that spawned romance and heroism. For her sociology Honors project, directed by assistant professor Daniel Jasper, she drew upon her lingering fascination with these stories to study the impact they had on today’s college students. Kristin showed small clusters of students, 52 in all, one of the three selections—The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast—and asked them to discuss how these tales may have influenced the students’ expectations of life and love. Her results showed that the fairy tales had indeed left an impression that had been altered by hard realities. The fairy- tale messages of idyllic love, pristine endings, and triumphant goodness were now viewed with much skepticism by many students who had been raised during increasing marital breakups, job insecurity, and the moral ambiguities of war. “Everyone knows,” Kristin said of the fantasy world depicted in the movies, “that it’s not how things work.” Ms. Cynthia I. The other conclusion Kristin drew is that in spite of doubtful attitudes these memorable stories had a positive effect. Though shorn of much of their magical powers, the fairy tales remain an important leaven and a source of hope. They may be unrealistic but there remains something real about them worth holding. Based on her findings, Kristin believes the tales do help prevent further collapse into negativity. They act as a modest buffer. Kristin summed up the paradox by linking two insights. As real depictions of life, she said, “the students ripped the movies to shreds.” At the same time, she added, “to a person they’d show them to their kids.” Mr. & Mrs. Larry C.
