The 25 high school students had one thing in common: they’d all flunked their English classes during the previous year and were assigned to a make-up session during the summer. The five-week course bore the tag “remedial” and enrolled students from grades 9 to 11. Kelly Steward ’ 0 7 was there to observe the class as part of her study of what strategies might be used to enable students like these to succeed. This was a diverse group, ethnically and racially, and its members came from a wide variety of schools. As Kelly was to discover, their reasons for being there also differed. She also learned, somewhat to her surprise, that poor performance in school didn’t necessarily indicate that students weren’t interested. “Many had unique reading interests,” she said. “Some read books like The DaVinci Code or African-American poetry on their own. So it was important to find out their actual reading interests.” Kelly’s goal was to locate methods that could help teachers build on those interests within the school environment, especially in urban areas. Her concern stems from her desire to be a teacher who uses methods that can encourage students to overcome whatever distractions they may face outside of school. By the end of the session, Kelly fixed on several of the suggestions gleaned from those texts and her observations. One was the need to place high expectations on students who need assistance. “All students can accomplish a lot,” she said. “Let them know they can achieve.” Another was to allow students to achieve goals by using different means: providing a list of readings instead of a single requirement. A third recommendation was to make assignments that relate to the students’ world.
