Among the biggest rewards T ammy Balliet ’ 0 7 gathered from her research was a clearer sense of what kind of teacher she would like to be if and when she decides to become one. During a summer’s internship at the DaVinci Science Center in Allentown, Tammy designed a project to teach fourth-to- sixth-grade children the techniques for finding small organisms in stream and pond water at nearby Cedar Beach. Finding macroinvertebrates such as mayflies and crayfish was one thing, identifying them another, and accounting for why more of them existed in one place rather than another also mattered. Tammy, who majored in biology and education, oversaw all this in addition to keeping close tabs on the behavior of her young charges. Some shied away from wading into the shallow water and were assigned other key functions on the team. Just one fell in. For Tammy, much of the excitement was watching the students do their own learning. She gave them the basics and oversaw their efforts. “I didn’t know what to expect from them,” she said, “because I’d never had my own classroom.” To her delight, the best results occurred when students took their own initiatives. As the experiment continued, Tammy says she began to recognize her teaching style as providing students with the tools that enabled them to make their own discoveries. She confirmed her belief that a student-centered learning concept worked because nothing motivates like self-motivation. She also saw herself as someone who can allow considerable freedom among students to pursue objectives in their own ways, not necessarily “by the book.” She had asked her students to look for pebbles at the bottom of the stream and to be on the lookout for things that just looked like pebbles.
