ANd MANy THANkS TO yOu fOR THE WARM ANd GENEROuS WELCOME WHICH yOu HAVE ExTENdEd TO kATHy ANd ME duRING THIS PAST yEAR AS WE HAVE SETTLEd INTO THE RICH TRAdITIONS ANd dAILy RHyTHMS Of THE MORAVIAN COMMuNITy. WE ARE dELIGHTEd to be a part of this distinguished educational community of teaching, learning, and performing. you have shared with us your hopes, your dreams, and your understanding of what is best about Moravian, and I attempted to give an articulate voice to your many insights in the inauguration address last April. Community is of central importance to the educational experience at Moravian. We began as a community of learning some 265 years ago within the Moravian religious community. We continue to live together, study together, serve together, and play together. Our life together is given rich purpose and fundamental direction by our mission, “to prepare men and women for lives of leadership and service for the common good.” As we look to the future, we desire to be the community of the great embrace, welcoming men and women from all walks of life, being representative of the rich diversity of people and cultures within the many communities from which our students come to learn and to which they go, upon graduation, to serve. Liberal learning is the lifeblood of the Moravian community. As our faculty have said in the Moravian Academic Plan 2006, we want to “assure that all students grapple with the fundamental questions about self, society, and nature, and acquire a broad range of skills for critical thinking and communication.” The academic life on campus is intended to be rigorous. We grapple with life’s big questions. We search for compelling, creative, and cogent means for expressing the truths we discover. We seek the courage to listen and learn from others. As we look to the future, we want the passion for learning that takes place in classrooms, laboratories, studios, and rehearsal halls to be a part of the life of the residence halls, the practice fields, and the HuB as well. Professional service follows from liberal learning. for generations, Moravian has been sending well-prepared graduates into the world as teachers, health care professionals, business leaders, artists, musicians, and clergy. As we look to the future, we want our graduates to be able professionals as well as the kind of leaders who know how to address the needs and directions of society’s service institutions so that all men and women, especially those who find themselves on the fringes of society, are cared for in ways that are both effective and humane.

We continue to live together, study together, serve together, and play together. Stewardship of our resources, both human and capital, is crucial to the future viability of Moravian. We have been given a wonderful campus, fine professional colleagues, and a growing endowment. As stewards of these resources, we need to commit ourselves to be prudent in their management and generous in our contributions to their growth so that our buildings can be well maintained, our faculty and staff well compensated, and our students provided with the kind of financial aid that will keep the door of opportunity and study open for them in the years to come. 01. Thank you for your generous contributions to Moravian. Together, we are proving to be good stewards of this remarkable community of liberal learning and preparation for professional leadership and service. You will discover, in the pages that follow, a record of how your contributions have supported the research of our faculty and students in many exciting ways.
