The research involved two groups of Moravian students, nine<br />
apiece, recruited from volunteers who had a basic knowledge of<br />
algebra. Each group was given exactly the same algebra questions<br />
but under different circumstances.<br />
Members of one group were surprised by a quiz that they<br />
were told would be graded. The students in the other group were<br />
informed before the session that they would be asked to complete<br />
an algebra worksheet.<br />
When Mark tallied the scores, he found support for his<br />
hypothesis. The pop quiz group answered on average 50 percent<br />
of the questions correctly, while the group that had been notified<br />
was right 80 percent of the time.<br />

Mark, a psychology and education major, interprets his<br />
findings as evidence that the pop quiz is generally a bad idea.<br />
Heightening student anxiety is too likely to harm test per-<br />
formance, he believes, and therefore blunts education rather<br />
than fosters learning (“I also wonder if that anxiety ever<br />
goes away”). “It’s hard to do anything when you’re nervous<br />
and sick to your stomach,” he said.<br />
“We can’t eliminate tests,” he continued, “but I think all<br />
students deserve the right to prepare for them.”<br />
