‘Bike hui’ first of its kind
A NEW partnership between
the city council, Bike On Trust
and Waka Kotahi is supporting
students to get the maximum
benefit from their bikes and
school tracks.
The first ‘Bikes in Schools
Ōtautahi Hui’, held at Te Ara
Koropiko West Spreydon School,
saw students and teachers from
15 schools join the Cycle Safe
team and Bike on Trust for a day
of information and games.
City council
transport operations
manager
Stephen Wright
said the hui was
the first event of
Stephen
its kind to be held
in Christchurch.
It was a great
opportunity
for schools to share ideas and
experiences on how to get the
most out of their bikes and bike
tracks, he said.
“Our team are keen to see
our school kids learn new skills
and get the chance to enjoy the
fun that cycling brings,” Wright
said.
The Bikes in Schools programme
involves schools
constructing purpose-built cycle
tracks on the school grounds,
a fleet of new bikes and bike
helmets, and storage facility,
plus skills training for staff and
students.
Paul
McArdle
Paul McArdle
from the Bike
On Trust, said
the trust works
to give children
regular and equal
access to bikes
and bike tracks
within their
school environment.
McArdle is hopeful the hui
model will be picked up by
councils around New Zealand.
“We hope other councils
will follow Christchurch City
Council’s lead, because when the
cycling groups partner up, we
McArdle said school children
Rangers
power
up with
e-utes
CITY COUNCIL rangers are
moving towards being ‘e-rangers’
with the arrival of two new
electric utes.
The twin cab utes are a new
addition for the Port Hills and
Banks Peninsula regional park
rangers, joining the fleet of one
electric ‘side-by-side’ LUV vehicle
and an electric motorcycle.
“These vehicles may look like
a standard park ranger ute, but
they do enable the majority of our
daily work – while helping out the
environment and incurring reduced
operational costs as we do
it,” said Port Hills and Banks Peninsula
head ranger Paul Devlin.
The trucks come with a standard
3-pin plug in the truck, allowing
rangers to run electric tools or
handheld battery chargers off the
truck’s battery pack.
“These basic 2WD EV utes with
a range of 400km can still do 75
per cent of the things we need
ranger trucks to do. Just not off
road, in the snow or towing too
much,” Devlin said.
He said it was a move towards
the city council’s sustainability
policy goals.
