awards, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a special commendation<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Kate Greenaway Medal<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1995 and <strong>the</strong> UNESCO Prize <strong>in</strong> 1997 for<br />

“Someth<strong>in</strong>g Else.” His work on “The Swan’s<br />

Stories” garnered him an honorable mention<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Bologna Book Fair and a place on <strong>the</strong><br />

Kurt Maschler Award shortlist <strong>in</strong> 1998.<br />

Among his most celebrated achievements<br />

are two Kate Greenaway Medals, <strong>the</strong><br />

first <strong>in</strong> 2002 for “Pirate Diary: The Journal<br />

of Jake Carpenter” and <strong>the</strong> second <strong>in</strong> 2004<br />

for “Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver.” Collaborat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with Paul Stewart, Riddell also earned <strong>the</strong><br />

Smarties Award <strong>in</strong> 2004 for “Fergus Crane,”<br />

Born <strong>in</strong> 1962 <strong>in</strong> Capetown, South Africa,<br />

Christopher Barry Riddell has<br />

carved a dist<strong>in</strong>guished career as<br />

a multifaceted artist, renowned for<br />

his exceptional talent <strong>in</strong> both illustration and<br />

political satire. His artistic journey is a testament<br />

to his dedication to <strong>the</strong> craft, earn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him numerous accolades and a prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world of literature and visual<br />

arts.<br />

Riddell’s educational foundation was laid<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Epsom School of Art and Design from<br />

1980 to 1981, followed by a B.A. with firstclass<br />

honors from Brighton Polytechnic <strong>in</strong><br />

1984. This academic background laid <strong>the</strong><br />

groundwork for his future artistic endeavors.<br />

As a freelance illustrator and writer, Riddell’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence extends across a wide spectrum.<br />

His work as a political cartoonist for<br />

esteemed London periodicals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Economist from 1988 to 1995, and later for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Independent, Independent on Sunday,<br />

Guardian, and Observer, start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1995,<br />

has been a platform for his <strong>in</strong>cisive commentary<br />

and satirical wit. Through his political<br />

cartoons, he has brought press<strong>in</strong>g issues to<br />

showcas<strong>in</strong>g his versatility as both an illustrator<br />

and writer.<br />

In addition to his literary contributions,<br />

Riddell’s artistic prowess extends to cover<br />

art production for esteemed publications<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> Literary Review, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

1997, and <strong>the</strong> New Statesman. His ability<br />
