engines, research part numbers and then
sell them on eBay. This past year he sold
over $6,000 worth of used parts off of
used engines. He has been able to keep
accurate records, identify engine parts,
develop skills using Ebay, and develop
customer service relationships. He plans
to continue this SAE program in the near
future.
Shealin Wiemann, Maquoketa FFA
Chapter, is the winner in Beef Production
Placement, which is sponsored by Iowa
Cattlemen’s Foundation. She has worked
close to 3,000 hours with her grandpa on
his Cow-Calf operation. Wiemann helps
with feeding, genetic selection, overall
health, and maintenance on the farm.
Each year she adds experience responsibilities.
In the future, Weimann hopes
to apply the skills she has learned to her
own cattle herd.
Allyson Coates of the Maquoketa FFA
Chapter was runner-up in the Agricultural
Services category, while Megan Forret of
the Calamus-Wheatland FFA Chapter was
the runner-up in the Turfgrass Management
category.
Local farms earn Century,
Heritage recognition
Several Eastern Iowa farm families
were honored with the Century or Heritage
Farm designations at the Iowa State
Fair last summer. The program celebrates
farms that have been owned by the same
families for 100 and 150 years, respectively.
The Century Farm Program began in
1976 as part of the nation’s Bicentennial
Celebration. To date, more than 21,000
Century Farms and 1,800 Heritage Farms
have been recognized across the state of
Iowa.
Receiving Heritage Farm distinctions in
Clinton County were Gerald and Barbara
Nelson, Delmar, 1870; and Robert Wagemester,
Clinton, 1864.
Receiving Century Farm distinctions in
Clinton County were Loren and Karen Petersen,
DeWitt, 1919; Robert Wagemester,
Clinton, 1864; and Larry and Kathleen
Weber, Sabula, 1875.
Receiving Heritage Farm distinctions
in Jackson County were Robert Breeden,
Maquoketa, 1865; Mark Bruns, Baldwin,
1873; Bertrand J. “Butch” Coakley, Jr., La-
Motte, 1854; Loras Felts, Bellevue, 1871;
and John and Marilyn Lawler, Zwingle,
1850.
Receiving Century Farm distinctions in
Jackson County were Vincent J. Hoffman,
