HAYMAKERS ‘Making Hay’ Springbrook operation takes alfalfa to the next level as producer aims for a top quality product backed by lab test results BY LOWELL CARLSON EASTERN IOWA FARMER Duane Heading wants to be in the top 10 percent of hay producers when it comes to the quality of his organic alfalfa operation. So far his efforts are yielding that very product. Heading, of rural Springbrook, is a hay and forage producer who sells hay, lots of hay, with his markets as far away as Syracuse, New York. “I like making hay. A good bale of hay will always have a market,” he said. Organic alfalfa is a specialized market to be sure, but one the Headings feel confident to compete in. They also rent another farm west of Andrew that has been converted from row crop rental use to organic alfalfa as well. On land that was recently row cropped with corn and soybeans, Heading now takes four to five cuttings of alfalfa annually from seedlings that can remain profitable for multiple years before it’s necessary to re-establish a stand.
