EASTERN IOWA FARMER
Looking around on the internet for
inspiration for this piece led me
to do a quick Google search on ag
career topics. Website after website
popped up with lists of ag jobs from
farm workers to hydrologists. I admit, I
had to look that one up. It is someone who
helps protect the water supply and water
sources.
Next generation of ag
professionals has opportunities
for study and experience
Anyway, Google listed these careers in
alphabetical order with rows and rows of
clickable links complete with the degree
requirements and starting salaries. The
opportunities seemed almost endless,
which, when you think about it, they are.
Especially considering the pace of change
happening in the ag sector.
As the current class of freshmen settles
into their cozy dorm rooms on college
campuses across the state, their majors will
include things that those of us over the age
of 30 may have never heard of. Yes, that
means we are getting old, but it also means
that the next generation has more opportunities
in front of them than ever before.
One example of this is the newly minted
ag communications program at Iowa State
University. Before, any student wanting
to major in ag communications had to get
a degree in agricultural education with
communications tacked on as a sort of afterthought.
Now students can major in this
field and learn skills in journalism, social
media, and policy.
The other opportunity that students
today have more of is the chance to do
internships. For college kids, especially
