Christopher Slatoff is mostly a figurative sculptor and teacher who
usually works at monumental scale. He is the Sculpture Chairman
of the California Art Club and served as SLOPOKE 2021
Awards Jurist and featured artist. A graduate of CSU
Long Beach with a BFA, his formal education included
a year at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Faculty
d’Letres of the Universite d’Aix-Marseilles, France.
Since his early childhood, Chris has rarely gone
for more than a few days without sculpting. Similar
to fine paintings, the concept for a sculpture
starts with a 3-D sketch in clay and progresses
to a clay maquette, a small doll sized version
of the concept similar to a painter’s
“study” on which the
sculptor refines the
shapes and textures
to be incorporated
into the final work of
bronze. The final sculpture
in clay is cast in bronze or
other materials to which a patina
is applied. His monumental
work in sculpture is commissioned
for churches and the public such as
“Hecuba” now installed at USC, “George
Pepperdine” at Pepperdine University, “Enduring Heroes” in
Pasadena, “The Pieta” at Mission San Diego, “Adoption” at Our
Lady of Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles to name but a few.
He also creates large sculptures on private commissions such as
“Tree of Life” a 12-ft sculpture for Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
