Wednesday October 18 2023 Selwyn Times NEWS 13 Jump in and join the fun on Labour Day THE HORORATA Parish Fair is going to be the place to be on Labour Day. With more than 60 market stalls offering a variety of crafts, toys, clothes, candles, soaps, art, flowers, birdbaths and everything in between, the fair promises to be a fun family day out. The parish will also have its own stalls like the white elephant, plants, and produce. Said Hororata Community Trust executive officer Cindy Driscoll: “The country auction will be at 11.30am and there are sure to be some great bargains.” There will also be free activities funded by the council including archery and pedalmania plus traditional kids’ races. Pony rides and bouncy castles will be there too. “Creative kids is a fun competition for children to enter their creations. This year’s theme is ‘pillars of our community’. Draw your favourite place in the community or build it out of Lego – let your imagination go wild,” Driscoll said. All proceeds from the fair will go towards the parish’s pastoral care programme. “The parish has recently employed the Reverend Peg Riley who is continuing the good work of our former vicar Jenni Carter. Peg is well qualified to carry out this role with decades of experience serving the community as a vicar and hospital and school chaplain. “Peg is solely employed to provide pastoral care to our community – she will not be involved in other church activities or services,” Driscoll said. Entry to the fair is free and will take place at the Hororata Domain 9.30am-2pm. Donations are being taken for the white elephant stalls and the country auction – contact the Parish on hororataparish@gmail.com to get involved and visit www.hororataparish. co.nz for more information. Legal Matters Advance Directives We have the right to make decisions about our own medical treatment, whilst we have the mental capacity to understand the situation(s) and the consequences of our decision-making. However, there may come a time when you are unable to communicate your wishes due to a medical condition or incapacity. To help ensure your consent or refusal to a medical treatment is conveyed, New Zealand recognises the importance of advance directives, also known as “Living Wills” or Advance Care Plans. The person to whom you have granted power of attorney for personal care and welfare matters does not have legal authority to give a ‘do not resuscitate’ direction to healthcare professionals. Therefore, if you would want a ‘do not resuscitate’ direction to be in place in certain situations, you need to have clearly given your views on that, preferably in writing. An advance directive is a document that helps provide clarity to healthcare providers, attorneys, and family members about what medical treatments, such as life-sustaining treatment, resuscitation, or organ donation, a person would like to receive or refuse in specific situations should they be unable to communicate for themselves. An advance directive often addresses end-of-life care decisions, including the use of palliative care and the withdrawal of life support if necessary. An advance directive could request the refusal of life saving treatment after doctors have concluded that there is no reasonable expectation of the person being able to support their own life without it. Currently, advance directives are not legally binding on medical practitioners administering treatment, but they can carry significant weight in the decisionmaking. While advance directives are valuable tools for expressing one’s medical wishes, open communication with healthcare providers and loved ones is equally essential. Discussing your preferences with family members and healthcare professionals can help ensure that your wishes are known and respected. Advance directives empower individuals to have a say in their healthcare even when they are unable to communicate their preferences. Although New Zealand currently lacks specific legislation governing advance directives, UK case law, which may be followed in the future, suggests an advanced directive would be binding if it was clearly established, applicable to the circumstances, and not overruled by a clear statutory authority. We often assist clients with creating an advance directive when considering their Will and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
