FUNDRAISER: The Selwyn Fireworks Spectacular attracts
thousands of people each year.
Continuing a tradition of
community support
SINCE ITS inception over two
decades ago in Rolleston, the
heart of Selwyn, the Selwyn
Fireworks Spectacular has
consistently drawn attention,
growing from a local gathering to
an event that attracts thousands
from across Canterbury.
Established to support notfor-profit
organisations in
their fundraising endeavours,
the event has faced numerous
challenges. It has weathered
relocation due to Rolleston’s
expansion, adaptation to new
venues, and more recently
the constraints of Covid-19
restrictions and the impacts of
inflation. Despite these hurdles,
the spectacular remains a
steadfast tradition in our
district.
Initiated by community
volunteers in co-operation with
the local fire brigade, the event
began with simple ambitions,
including a community bonfire.
Today, while drawing an
impressive crowd of over 10,000
attendees annually, the focus
remains – supporting our notfor-profit
entities. Last year, the
event’s success translated into
over $23,000 for participating
organisations.
The tireless efforts of
volunteers ensure the event’s
continuity and success. It’s
crucial to note that every ticket
sale and donation directly
finances the event’s logistics.
With the increasing economic
challenges, particularly inflation,
strategic management and
community support have become
more vital than ever in ensuring

Financial prudence is
paramount. The event’s
longevity depends not only on
the funds raised but also on
diligent financial management,
guaranteeing its presence for
future Selwyn residents. The
responsibility will inevitably
transition to a new team,
and they will be tasked with
upholding its legacy, ensuring the
Selwyn Fireworks Spectacular
remains both a source of
community enjoyment and a
platform for vital fundraising.

5pm.
