Recycling plastic –
easy-to-use agri-services
• By Isabelle Teresa
October 16–22 is Recycling Week,
now in its 10th year. This nationwide
campaign reaches out to all sectors of
New Zealand society and business,
encouraging people to re-look at their
purchasing, waste and recycling practices
and to make improvements wherever
possible.
NZ farmers are lucky to have two
main recycling go-tos, Plasback and
Agrecovery.
Plasback
Buy liners from Plasback, with
different size options for farming and
for lifestyle blocks. Recycle items into
the different liners according to the five
“Streams”, then call Plasback to come and
collect when these are full. Couldn’t be
much easier!
There is a nominal collection charge,
except for ECOLAB blue drums, which
are free.
• Stream 1: Bale Wrap, silage pit covers,
small low density polyethylene (LDPE)
feed bags, shrink wrap and pallet covers.
• Stream 2: Large polypropylene feed
and fertiliser bags – half tonne and large
tonne.
• Stream 3, free collection: High
density polyethylene (HDPE) containers,
including ECOLAB blue drums – any
size from 1–60 L.
• Stream 4: Vineyard nets.
• Stream 5: Polypropylene twines from
farms and orchards.
Plasback also sells Tuffboard and Tuff
Deck products for farming use, from
100% recycled plastic and made in NZ.
Agrecovery
Agrecovery is a not-for-profit
charitable trust set up by the primary
industry to provide a sustainable solution
for agrichemicals and their packaging. Its
key message: “Don’t burn or dump – it’s
free to recycle!”
It specialises in containers of 0–60
litres, drums of 61–1,000 litres, and
free or subsidised disposal of unwanted
agrichemicals.
Over the last couple of years it
has been rolling out a new and wellreceived
scheme – recycling of LDPE
bags (No.4 plastic) and Woven PP bags
(No.5 plastic). LDPE accepted bags
now include BASF, Yara, Valagro, PGG
Wrightson Turf, Nufarm, DeLaval,
Kenso, Grosafe, Agritrade, PGG
Wrightson, Fruitfed Supplies, Country
Mile, NZAgbiz, Farmlands & PGG
Wrightson Seeds.
Agrecovery has multiple collection
sites across Selwyn (and nationwide),
plus collection events in areas without
permanent sites. Dropping materials to
their collection site is free – see their
website for latest details of the evergrowing
options. On-property collection
of certain items or quantities of items is
also possible – contact them to discuss.
STOCK FEED PELLETS
“Gladfield stock food has been a favourite at
our farm for some time. We love the simplicity
of the pellet form. Our chooks, calves, cattle,
and sheep go crazy for the tasty brew! Thanks,
Gladfield – we appreciate your innovation!”
