over <strong>the</strong> roofs of a twentieth-century<br />

English port city foreshadows <strong>the</strong><br />

show. On its passage to America, an<br />

adolescent meet<strong>in</strong>g between <strong>the</strong> parents<br />

of Count and Hen unfolds: one, <strong>the</strong><br />

son of an impoverished aristocratic l<strong>in</strong>e;<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> daughter of an <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

family of pretense. The scene <strong>in</strong>forms<br />

a collection founded on <strong>the</strong> voyage’s<br />

steely climate, its characters, and a cargo<br />

loaded with travel<strong>in</strong>g trunks full of<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s that will ultimately end up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
