Christian reads
for the family
BY SHEILA SEIFERT
AS A CHILD, I read a historical
novel about Catherine the
Great, who didn’t do what she
wanted to do and did what was
right for her adopted country.
Her sacrificial love later helped
me understand the magnitude
of what Jesus had sacrificed
for me. In the same way,
fiction entertains, but sometimes
it also demonstrates
faith principles in the lives of
its characters. Here are two
authors who strive to impart
God’s truths in their fun-toread
middle-grade books:
“D.L. Moody is quoted as saying, ‘If I could relive
my life, I would devote my entire ministry to
reaching children for God.’ Today’s child, more
than ever, needs clear biblical foundations to
build upon—along with enough comedy and
entertainment to hold their attention. These are
my goals in writing ‘The Magnificent Mulligans’
book series—the adventures of eight brothers
and sisters working together to run their
family’s wild animal park . . . as told by their
pet chimpanzee.”
—Bill Myers, bestselling author
“Though Brother Andrew looked and acted differently
than my character, I loosely based the Bible
smuggler in my book Big Risks in Russia on the
life of this Dutch missionary. I also had cousins
who smuggled Bibles in the 1980s. They gave me
details about how guards took apart cars and then
left them. Reality is different than fiction, but my
hope is that this story will inspire others to bravely
follow Jesus and be willing to risk for others in
need. Brother Andrew died while I was writing this
book, but the faith legacy of what he did lives on.”
