THE RESERVE Bank has left the 

official cash rate unchanged at 5.5 

per cent. 

The RBNZ warned inflation 

remained too high and monetary 

policy would remain restrictive. 

The central bank’s forecast 

interest rate track suggested no 

rate cuts were on the horizon until 

mid-2025. 

That puts the central bank at 

odds with market expectations, 

which had started to price in cuts 

from May 2024. 

The Kiwi dollar rose on the 

news that rates could be higher for 

longer. 

The monetary policy committee 

said it was confident the current 

level of the OCR was restricting 

demand. 

“However, ongoing excess demand 

and inflationary pressures 

are of concern, given the elevated 

level of core inflation.” 

If inflationary pressures were 

to be stronger than anticipated, 

the OCR would likely need to 

increase further, it said. 

The committee agreed interest 

rates would “need to remain at 

a restrictive level for a sustained 

period of time, so that consumer 

price inflation returns to target 

and to support maximum sustainable 

employment”. 

Inflation came in at 5.6 per cent 

for the 12 months to September 

and was up 1.8 per cent for the 

quarter, according to Stats NZ.

A CANTERBURY-based 

sports star has been charged 

with dishonestly taking a 

vehicle and intentional damage 

– but his name cannot be 

published due to a suppression 

order. 

The man – who listed 

his occupation on court 

documents as “athlete” – is 

facing two charges in the 

district court. 

An interim suppression 

order prevents reporting his 

name and any other details 

that may identify him. 

Court documents state on 

Wednesday, November 15 – 

the day after NZ Cup Day at 

Addington – the man allegedly 

took a car worth $10,000 from 

another person.

AN ORNATE period home 

once featured on Grand 

Designs New Zealand is on the 

market for up to $4.3 million, 

having been relocated from 

Christchurch to an isolated spot 

near Queenstown. 

The Turret House, a villa that’s 

more than 100 years old, featured 

on the television show in 

2017 when former owners Jamie 

and Melissa McMurtie spent 

over a year taking it apart and 

reassembling it in its new spot. 

They sold the house in 2018 

for $2.14 million. Now there is 

a deadline sale of the property, 

closing on December 20.

Terry is handling the listing, 

describing the home as having 

“a huge amount of the original 

detail, including the beautiful 

Carrara ceilings, wooden 

panelling, fireplace, mosaic tiles, 

native timber flooring and (a)

The five-bedroom 400 sq m 

home sits on one hectare in 

Gibbston Valley and has a 2021 

RV of $2.82 million. 

“With impressive stud height 

throughout, the four double 

bedrooms have a real sense 

of space and light, including 

the master with its very own 

ensuite, walk-in wardrobe and 

bespoke turret,” Terry’s listing 

reads. 

A separate one bedroom cottage 

on the property has been 

rented out to travellers. 

The home has a large openplan 

kitchen and dining room 

with a Rayburn cooker that 

car “dishonestly and without 

claim” but not in circumstances 

amounting to theft. He 

is also accused of intentionally 

damaging the car owner’s garage 

door. 

For the first charge, the man 

is facing a maximum penalty 

of seven years in prison. 

The second charge carries 

a maximum penalty of three 

months in prison or a $2000 

adjoins “a large scullery with a 

near-new double width Smeg 

oven, prep sink and bench, perfect 

for catering dinner parties 

or events”. 

“The formal living is straight 

from a fairy tale with an ornate 

fireplace, wooden panelling and 

cabinetry. 

“Modern additions include 

the internal access garage, 

private home cinema, partial 

double glazing, radiator heaters 

fine. 

While the man’s charges 

were listed in court last week, 

he is yet to appear in person. 

His next court appearance is 

scheduled for December. 

The sportsman was contacted 

for comment through a 

spokeswoman. 

She would not comment on 

the matter.

Death at men’s prison 

An inmate died at Christchurch 

Men’s Prison on Monday 

following attempts made by staff 

to revive him. Prison director Jo 

Harrex said the death is not being 

treated as suspicious, but cause of 

death will be investigated by the 

coroner and an investigation will 

be carried out by the independent 

Corrections Inspectorate. Harrex 

said Corrections’ thoughts were 

with the man’s family and friends, 

and other inmates are being 

provided with support. 

Former cathedral 

musical director dies 

Retired director of music for 

Christ Church Transitional 

Cathedral Brian Law passed 

away peacefully in his home on 

Monday. Law conducted many big 

international orchestras during 

his career and worked in both 

opera and ballet. The conductor 

moved to Christchurch in 1990 

and frequently worked with the 

Christchurch Symphony and was 

a founding director of Cantores. 

Law was director of music with 

the cathedral choir from 2003 to 

2014 when he retired. There will 

be no funeral, at his request, but 

a memorial service will be held 

early next year. 

P-3K2 Orion named 

aircraft of the year 

The Lockheed P-3K2 Orion is the 

winner of the Air Force Museum’s 

aircraft of the year. Kiwis 

voted for their favourite of the 

museum’s 33 historic aircraft in a 

poll which opened on November 

9. The P-3K2 Orion recently 

retired from the RNZAF after 

more than 50 years’ service. The 

Orion finished with 19 per cent 

of the votes cast. Second place 

went to the Skyhawk, and the Bell 

UH-1H Iroquois helicopter came 

in third.

Charges dropped 



after 17-month 

harness racing 

investigation 

A MAJOR undercover police 

investigation into alleged race 

fixing and drug offences in the 

harness racing industry appears 

to have ended with the final 

charges being dropped. 

Operation Inca was a 

17-month investigation involving 

phone taps, bugged cars and 

hotel rooms, and police officers 

following harness racing drivers 

to race meetings, the bulk of 

the inquiry focused on the 

Canterbury harness racing scene. 

It became public when 11 

racing industry participants were 

arrested in September 2018, most 

charged with involvement in 

fixing the outcome of races. 

It can now be revealed Judge 

Michael Crosbie ruled in the 

district court on November 10 

the last two charges should be 

stayed, effectively dropped. No 

race fixing or corruption has 

been proven, the New Zealand 

Herald has reported. 

Other similar or related 

charges were also dropped last 

year after lengthy delays. 

Most of the 11 people charged 

have interim name suppression 

and are applying for that to 

become permanent. 

Some of harness racing’s most 

successful horse people were 

among those arrested, while 

many others were questioned 

by police – but none have been 

found guilty of race fixing or any 

form of corruption involving 

racing. 

There were admissions of recreational 

drug use after evidence 

of that was also scooped up in 

the Operation Inca net but that 

resulted in guilty pleas and, being 

of a minor nature, diversion 

was granted. 

Harness Racing New Zealand 

bosses are awaiting Judge Crosbie’s 

written findings, scheduled 

for February. 

“HRNZ is still waiting for official 

confirmation that Operation 

Inca has come to an end and that 

charges have been dropped. We 

are currently seeking that information 

and confirmation,” says 

HRNZ chief operating officer 

Mauro Barsi. 

“This has been a challenging 

time for the industry and once 

we know more, we may well look 

to see how these events unfolded 

and what next steps are needed 

to support our participants and 

our integrity.” 

Police yesterday declined to 

comment until February citing 

suppression orders in place. 

James Rapley KC, who acted 

for three of those charged said 

while the cases are now over, the 

damage to his clients and the 

others charged remains. 

“There were accusations of 

corruption and race fixing and 

the arrests were very public, but 

after five years it has come to 

nothing,” Rapley 

said. 

“This 

investigation 

and the 

hearings have 

caused divorce, 

depression

and have had 

real human 

consequences.” 

One of the accused has spent 

more than $400,000 on legal 

bills. Rapley said his clients will 

be seeking costs but a “woefully 

outdated act dating back to 

1967” makes it near impossible 

for defendants cleared of any 

wrongdoing to get adequate 

compensation. 

The Star understands a large 

part of at least one defendant’s 

legal bill was fighting to stop the 

Racing Integrity Board gaining 

access to the police evidence, 

which may have led to prosecutions 

under the rules of racing, 

for which the penalties including 

lengthy bans can be severe. 

Judge Raoul Neave made a 

final order several months ago 

denying the RIB access to the 

police file. 

The New Zealand Herald 

reported questions will be asked 

as to how the investigation got 

so big when, in one example of 

alleged match fixing, the race 

in question involved a bet of a 

mere $200 by one of the winning 

horse’s owners for a $280 profit. 

Horse race or match fixing 

is an unusual charge in New 

Zealand because the prosecution 

must prove that an act was done 

with intent to influence a betting 

outcome by manipulating the 

race result, and in doing so, the 

accused obtained an advantage 

or caused loss to another.

GOVERNMENT water 

regulator Taumata Arowai has 

declined Christchurch’s bid 

to gain two exemptions from 

chlorinating the city’s drinking 

water supplies. 

The applications were for a 

Brooklands-Kainga residual 

disinfection exemption and a 

continuous monitoring and chlorine 

contact time exemption for 

the city’s treatment plants and 

pump stations. 

Cit council head of three 

waters Brent Smith said Taumata 

Arowai’s decision was disappointing 

but expected. 

“With this final decision, 

we’re in a better position to 

understand what would need 

to occur to be successful in any 

future applications,” Smith said. 

Several factors led to the 

decisions, including a lack of 

a bacterial treatment barrier 

and an inadequate backflow 

prevention programme. 

Taumata Arowai also declined 

the council’s application for 

an exemption from two rules 

relating to the chlorination of the 

city’s supply. 

One of the rules meant 

continuous equipment was 

needed to monitor chlorine 

levels at the pump stations, while 

the other aimed to ensure there 

was enough chlorine ‘contact 

time’ in the water to kill microorganisms 

before it reached 

consumers. 

The city council received draft 

versions of the decisions in May, 

indicating the applications would 

be declined. 

The council then gave its 

feedback and Taumata Arowai’s 

final report took the feedback 

into account.

city councillors on the decisions 

and indicated a willingness to 

explore solutions with council. 

“Our exemptions process is 

new and the council was one of 

the first to make an application. 

The requirement for chlorine 

contact time is because some 

micro-organisms take time to 

kill. 

“We suggested working 

together to get high quality 

research done into the aquifers 

that supply Christchurch’s 

drinking water to find out if 

these micro-organisms are in 

those deep, secure aquifers. 

“We know Christchurch’s 

drinking water supply has 

characteristics that make it 

unlike other supplies, and the 

research would be of immense 

value and hopefully a way to

However, Smith said the 

complexities of the supply 

and the amount of investment 

required means getting a residual 

disinfection exemption will be a 

challenge. 

“Smaller, less complex supplies, 

such as Brooklands/Kainga 

or Birdlings Flat, are more 

likely to be successful if we can 

adequately manage all the 

risks.” 

The city council will prioritise 

the installation of continuous 

monitoring equipment and 

the replacement of the existing 

temporary chlorination system.

Emergency response like trying to 

put together 1000-piece jigsaw

A SENIOR police tactical 

commander has likened the 

emergency response to the 

mosque terror attacks to trying 

to put together a 1000-piece 

jigsaw puzzle dumped upside 

down on the floor. 

The Armed Offenders Squad 

officer, in the role of Zero-Alpha, 

quickly moved from the squad 

room to sit alongside incident 

controller Senior Sergeant Roy 

Appley in the Southern Communications 

Centre as the crisis 

unfolded on March 15, 2019. 

The policeman told the inquest 

into the deaths of 51 people murdered 

at the Al Noor Mosque 

and Linwood Islamic Centre that 

he was working very hard. 

“It was like someone had 

dumped a thousand-piece jigsaw 

on the floor and all those pieces 

were upside down and each piece 

of that jigsaw was a relevant 

piece of information that we had 

to know, but I’d pick each one of 

them up and put it in the jigsaw 

and try and figure out where it fit 

within the picture,” he said. 

“We tried our very best to pick 

each piece up and put it where

it should go.” 

The commander let an AOS 

team leave the scene of the first 

shooting at Al Noor Mosque for 

Linwood, despite a police officer 

saying there were already enough 

people in Linwood Ave because 

he believed there could be more 

gunmen. 

An AOS team leader previously 

told the inquest he regretted 

leaving injured victims at 

Al Noor to attend the Linwood 

scene. 

The Zero-Alpha officer told 

the Coroners Court yesterday he 

heard over the police radio there 

were six armed offenders at Linwood, 

shots being fired at Eastgate 

mall, while the terrorist had 

falsely claimed there were nine 

other shooters in Canterbury. 

Given what had occurred at 

Al Noor, the officer said the 

possibility of six armed gunmen 

at Linwood was a “catastrophic 

thought”.

at Linwood, he

officer said he wondered if the 

presence of a St John commander 

at the Southern Communications 

Centre would have 

helped. 

He did not know if there was 

much that could have been 

done to improve his response, 

although he did wish the AOS

Plan to fix council shortcomings

THE CITY council has released 

an action plan to address the 

shortcomings found in an 

independent report into its Three 

Waters department. 

The author of the report, 

consultancy KPMG, found the 

department had dozens more 

positions than budgeted for and 

had racked up a $6.5 million 

staffing cost blow out since July 

2019. 

In response, the city council 

said key staff had developed an 

action plan to improve its systems 

and try to prevent similar 

situations in future. 

“The council is currently 

undertaking a significant level 

of work to actively address the 

planned actions based on priority 

and feasibility,” it said in a 

statement. 

The plan addresses 15 findings 

in the KPMG report with more 

than 30 planned actions. 

Nine were considered high 

priority, and all were to be in 

place by the end of September 

2024. They included “annual 

training on minute-taking” for 

all executive support staff, and 

training on how to use employment 

forms correctly for all staff 

who use them. 

Educating staff on the difference 

between operating expenditure 

and capital expenditure, 

formally defining job positions 

and ensuring the master council 

job chart was up to date also had 

high priority status in the action 

plan. 

Most areas of improvement 

related to new, reviewed or 

upgraded systems, namely a new 

Human Resources Information 

System, the city council said. 

“Executive and senior leaders 

at council are committed to 

improve the council processes 

and systems to mitigate the risks 

identified,” it said. 

Chief executive Dawn Baxendale 

and chief financial officer 

Leah Scales both tendered their 

resignations last week. 

Head of Three Waters Helen 

Beaumont and general manager 

of infrastructure, planning and 

regulatory services Jane Davis 

had also resigned earlier this 

year.

Johanson said he was heartened 

by the improvement action 

plan. 

“I think there’s a number of 

really important things that 

(executive management) had undertaken 

to address and the key 

thing is to make sure that we’re 

monitoring that at a governance 

level, again to make sure that it’s 

implemented,” he said. 

The Office of the Auditor- 

General has been in 

contact with the city 

council following the 

resignation of senior 

staff members and the 

publication of two reports 

on the management of 

council assets. 

Sector manager Stephanie 

Macdonald-Rose 

said while the office is 

wanting to further understand 

the city council’s 

response to staffing issues, 

it is not keeping a 

closer eye on them than 

on other councils. 

She said it is “of course 

interested in what the 

council’s next steps 

will be”.

Healing packs for sexual assault victims

VICKI-ANNE Parker wants to 

open up the taboo conversation 

of child sexual abuse. 

It is a “touchy subject” that 

people “shy away from,” but 

she understands the damage it 

causes. 

Said Parker: “I have had very 

severe childhood sexual abuse 

from a very young age . . . and 

sexual assaults as an adult. I am 

still in weekly counselling to deal 

with the severity of the abuse I 

encountered. 

“It is about getting the word 

out, so people know we exist and 

learn how they can help, how to 

be involved and how to open the 

conversation.” 

To help, Parker’s charity NZ 

Gifts of Love and Strength, 

founded in 2019 following the 

March 15 mosque attacks, has 

changed its focus. 

What began as delivering 

meals and care packages to 

victims of the mosque attacks 

and their families, refugees, 

flood relief and trauma survivors 

is now operating as the first and 

only charity in Canterbury to 

offer healing care packs to youth, 

aged 13 to 18 years old, who are 

affected by sexual harm. 

Parker said the charity was 

her way of “repaying the help” 

she had received after several 

traumatic experiences includng

the loss of her home, her marriage, 

friends in the CTV building 

which collapsed during the 

February 22, 2011 earthquake, 

a small house fire and sexual 

assault. 

“Whilst I also struggle with 

chronic health conditions (Lyme 

disease), it allows me to have 

huge empathy for others who 

have gone through trauma,” said 

Parker. 

“I was told I had to scale back 

due to my health issues and my 

doctor agreed that focusing on 

one key area, where the medical 

professionals refer to us, would 

be manageable.” 

The healing packs include a 

lap blanket, wheat bag, worry 

worm, pencil case and pencils, 

handmade lavender hearts, 

mindfulness books, toiletries, 

hot chocolate, bars, tissues, bags 

and lip balms. 

The packs are distributed via 

the free confidential medical 

service of The Cambridge Clinic, 

based in Wainoni. 

Said Parker: “The packs are not 

just for girls but for boys, genderneutral 

clients, and the rainbow 

community. 

“While the charity does not 

take referrals from the general 

public, we are referred to the 

youth who have to go through 

DNA testing or invasive treatments 

from the clinic.” 

Eighty per cent of the packs 

are handmade by volunteers or 

donated by the public and every 

pack is approved by staff at the 

clinic to help aid youth on their 

healing journey. 

Said Parker: “Some who have 

made items have health issues, 

others are survivors of sexual 

harm, so their contribution 

means something more personally 

to them. 

“(Some people) have stated 

they are healing by helping youth 

in the same situation.” 

Parker said the charity doesn’t 

meet their clients so it is hard to 

attract funders without direct 

feedback from youth. 

“But we do via their medical 

professionals – that it made a

birthday,” she said. 

“It’s not only us that struggle

Maria recalls ‘bride flight’ air race 

that brought her to Christchurch 

MARIA WYNANDS has a love 

story for the ages. 

Seventy years ago, she flew on a 

‘bride flight’ to be with her fiancé 

Peter, from their home country 

the Netherlands to New Zealand, 

as part of an international air 

race. 

The London to Christchurch 

challenge was organised in 1953. 

The reward for first place – in 

what was then the world’s longest 

air race, 19,756km – was mainly 

glory but also a Harewood Gold 

Cup, named after Christchurch 

Airport’s operating name in the 

1950s. 

Maria’s betrothed Peter 

Wynands had already been 

in New Zealand for almost a 

year-and-a-half, with the young 

couple writing weekly letters to 

each other. 

Maria remembers the couple 

met by chance on a Dutch skating 

rink, after she was invited by 

a girl friend. 

“We often went skating after 

work . . . I was putting my skates 

on and there was a big light, and 

I said ‘hey get out of my light’. At 

that time I was 18 or 19 and then 

my friend introduced me to him 

and then he came over and put

my other skate on, pulled me up 

and we went skating. 

“He had very strong hands and 

I felt so secure, and I said (to my 

friend) ‘oh, I really like him’.” 

When her parents questioned 

Maria about her new boyfriend, 

they said they didn’t want him to 

be a factory worker, so she had 

to check and was relieved to find 

out he wasn’t. 

The couple were engaged just 

before Peter left in early 1952 for 

a secure job in New Zealand. 

Maria, now 91, said many years 

later when she met her future 

daughter-in-law, Tracey, the first 

thing she did was help her put on 

a pair of ten pin bowling shoes.

mixing with some of the 63 

passengers at a posh Kensington 

Palace Hotel in the capital. 

“We had a tour through 

London, we had a beautiful 

dinner and we met all the staff – 

so it was absolutely fantastic. 

“We were one big family in the 

plane,” she said. 

On departure from Heathrow 

on October 8, the aircraft – 

known as Dr Ir M H Damme 

– was waved off by the Duke of 

Gloucester. The flight was long. 

Different aircraft made various 

stopovers including in Rome, 

Baghdad, Karachi, Rangoon, 

Jakarta, Colombo, Darwin, 

Brisbane and onwards. 

Maria remembers a frosty 

pre-dawn arrival at Harewood 

Airport on October 11 – though 

the RAF’s Canberra had already 

taken honours in terms of speed, 

finishing the day before. 

The arrivals were heralded 

on the front page of The 

Christchurch Star-Sun. The DC- 

6A Liftmaster won the transport 

section (given it was carrying the 

prospective brides and others) in 

49 hours, 57 minutes. 

From the 1970s, Maria and 

Peter enjoyed travelling back to 

Europe, where Maria’s father 

was fulsome in his approval of a 

successful marriage. 

“My father said, ‘no I’ve 

forgiven you’, because he could 

see how happy I was.” 

The couple were very happily 

married and in their 65th year 

of marriage when Peter passed 

in 2019.

jokes that Peter (who’d had his 

outward ship fare paid by the 

New Zealand Government) 

arranged the flight because he 

didn’t want her to repeat his 

trip on the boat, given all the 

shenanigans he had witnessed on 

board. 

The couple had decided to 

move away from post-World 

War 2 Europe. Due to housing 

shortages, and a slow gradual 

economic recovery, they would 

have been left living with family, 

Maria said. 

“It’s all Hitler’s fault we’re here. 

Because we’d had five years of 

war . . . and if Peter and I wanted 

to get married in a couple of 

years we had to live with our 

parents. I didn’t want to live with 

his parents and we couldn’t live 

with my parents because I still 

had two younger siblings,” she 

said. 

While living in Tilburg, Holland, 

she’d grown up in a loving 

family, with two older and two 

younger siblings. Her father was 

an officer in the Dutch army and 

had strict views on some things, 

including the trip out to be with 

her fiancé, she remembers. 

There was some history to the 

challenge, with there having 

been a London to Melbourne air 

race in 1934.

Modernisation is the common pursuit 

of all people around the world. As a 

developing country with 1.4 billion 

people, how can China achieve its 

modernisation? This topic has drawn 

worldwide attention and discussion 

through these years. Some people 

may not be so familiar with the term 

Chinese modernisation. Here, I would 

like to interpret the implication of 

Chinese modernisation from the 

perspective of common prosperity 

which makes modernisation not a 

luxury for the privileged few, but every 

household. 

As President Xi Jinping points 

out, common prosperity is what 

socialism is essentially about and 

what the people want. Since the 18th 

National Congress of the Communist 

Party of China, achieving common 

prosperity for all has featured 

ever more prominently in China’s 

agenda. Through balancing regional 

development and winning the fight 

against poverty, China is getting closer 

to the goal of building a moderately 

prosperous society in all respects. 

Common prosperity is not the same 

as absolute egalitarianism. China’s 

common prosperity aims at vigorously 

promoting high-quality development, 

generally raising the income levels of 

urban and rural residents, gradually 

narrowing the distribution gap, 

resolutely preventing polarisation and 

unifying efficiency, equality together 

with social stability. We allow some 

people to get rich first, and encourage 

those having got prosperous first 

to help others catch up, so that the 

prosperity of the entire population will 

be realised in the end. 

In recent ten years, China has realised 

remarkable achievements, creating 

good conditions for realising common 

prosperity. The value added by 

manufacturing sector takes up nearly 

30 percent of the global total, topping 

the world. Its per capita food supply 

is over 470 kg, far above the 400 kg 

international food security line. More 

than 200 million Chinese people 

have received higher education. 

Around 60 percent of its economic 

growth are spurred by scientific and 

technological advancement. China 

boasts a notable edge in emerging 

sectors like new energy vehicles and 

artificial intelligence. In 2022, China 

contributed 17 percent of the world’s 

GDP. Its urban/rural ratio of per 

capita disposable income, an index on 

income disparity, has lowered from 

2.88 ten years ago to the current 2.45. 

China has claimed unprecedented 

victory in the tough battle against 

poverty, lifting 100 million people out 

of poverty, which is one of the most 

celebrated achievements at home and 

abroad. The following are some typical 

measures taken in this process: 

First, targeted poverty alleviation. 

A primary-level government identifies 

each and every poor household under 

its jurisdiction, creates a file for it 

and starts the ongoing process of 

lifting it out of poverty. Second, blood 

making rather than blood transfusion. 

Poor households are encouraged 

to seek sustainable development 

on their own, by tapping into their 

unique location advantages and 

local resources, focusing more on 

the production side, such as helping 

people to set up businesses, secure 

start-up loans and get skills training. 

Third, all-out efforts by governments 

at all levels. Poverty alleviation 

performance is a key criterion in 

the evaluation, appointment and 

promotion of public servants at all 

levels of government. And finally, full 

participation of the society. Many 

Internet companies in China have 

voluntarily helped remote regions sell 

their products via live streaming, and 

taught rural residents how to utilise 

social media platforms to grow their 

business. As a result, many must-buy 

local products and must-visit places 

are known to the world. 

Prosperity is not real until common 

prosperity is achieved, and 

development is true only when 

development of all countries has 

been made. In 2021, President Xi 

Jinping proposed Global Development 

Initiative. While marching toward 

modernisation, China will increase 

its input to global development 

cooperation, provide more 

opportunities for the world, share the 

development fruits more widely and 

fairly, and embrace a brighter future 

of common development with people 

of all countries in the world.

Sea level rise a worry for 

Coastal Pathway users 

The finished Coastal Pathway will be a 

great asset for those living in the east and 

able to use it daily or weekly. To be riding 

along so close to the sea is a big part of 

the attraction, but I do wonder about the 

decision to spend so much on this when 

important access roads on Banks Peninsula 

will be threatened by sea level rising in 25 

years time. 

The ocean rises and falls equally around 

the world and certainly within the same 

city limits (Banks Peninsula is part of 

Christchurch city). 

If the access roads on Banks Peninsula 

face uncertainty, surely the road across Mc- 

Cormacks Bay and the whole pathway will 

be threatened as well. 

The pathway is certainly nice to have, but 

can ratepayers afford increases to pay for 

such luxuries?

“We’ve been discussing it for 

12 or 18 months how we can 

benefit this area, but it’s an area 

rich in rugby league talent, going

(more recently) Jordan Riki, 

Slade Griffin, Griffin Neame. 

“We’re just hoping that if we 

can assist and develop the game 

here, there will be more to come. 

“We’re committed for the next 

two years and hopefully that will 

form a catalyst for more guys to

“The first thing that fails under 

pressure or fatigue (in a game) 

will be their skill level, so it’s a 

fine line. Teaching these kids to 

listen and that discipline doing 

drills, once they pick that habit 

up, that’s something they have 

for the rest of their lives – in 

footy and in general.”

interprovincial over 40s cricket 

tournament starts at the 

Mandeville Sports Centre and 

Ohoka Cricket Club today. 

The 27-strong squad, which 

represents Canterbury-Otago, 

won both divisions in 2022, and 

will compete against Auckland, 

Districts (Central/Northern) and 

Wellington/Tasman during the 

four-day tournament. 

They will also be vying for 16 

spots in the New Zealand side for 

the inaugural over 40s World Cup 

in South Africa in January and 

February. 

The carrot of World Cup 

selection meant all sides would be

this season in Caro Bowl was

to Cockle Bay’s James Meredith 

3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Saturday’s final will 

see the two going head-to-head 

again as Meredith, who had a 

perfect record in Caro Bowl, is 

Cashmere’s top player.

“The tennis was just unreal. 

They both just hit the ball so 

hard. It really was next level 

compared to the players on the 

adjacent courts,” Tim Meredith

Young primed for 

national champs

CANTERBURY’S top junior Ruby 

Young will put her passion for 

tennis to the test when she takes 

on the country’s best in the U18 

national girls championships at 

Wilding Park starting tomorrow. 

Young, nationally ranked 

sixth for her age group, will play 

doubles with Lucia Gale, ranked 

seventh, who has also competed 

internationally. 

The Cashmere player has a 

busy summer of tennis ahead 

with two International Tennis 

Federation world tour tournaments 

in December, in Wellington and 

Tauranga, followed by two ITF 

junior tournaments in January. 

Her training and tournament 

schedule continues until August 

next year when she takes up a full 

tennis scholarship at the University 

of Wyoming, a strong US tennis 

college which competes in the 

Mountain West Conference. 

“I’m very excited to have this 

opportunity,” said Young. 

“I’m studying engineering as well 

as playing tennis and the college 

is strong from an academic and a 

sport perspective.” 

She has inherited her love of 

the game from her father, Greg, a 

former top junior and long-time 

Christchurch premier interclub 

player. He introduced her and her 

sister Lucy to the game when they 

were about five years old and still 

hits regularly with his daughters. 

“Dad is really passionate and 

knowledgeable about tennis,” 

Young said. 

“I’m playing for the same reason 

he did – I absolutely love it.” 

Highly regarded Canterbury 

coach Stuart Chalmers has served 

as Young’s coach for more than 

seven years. She has enjoyed 

considerable success at a regional, 

national and international level.

Canty powerlifters win 

world titles in Italy 


PENNY YANG and Callum 

Maule have powered up a 

level after returning from 

representing New Zealand 

at the world powerlifting 

championships held in Italy. 

Yang, a year 13 student 

at Burnside High School, 

competed in the female youth 

(U18) under 72kg division and 

was first in her weight and age 

classes. 

She competed in three 

categories and was squatting 

up to 133kg, bench pressing up 

to 60kg and deadlifting up to 

127kg. 

Maule, 18, a former Burnside 

High student was first in the 

youth division and competed in 

men’s under 85kg. 

He squatted up to 194kg, 

bench pressed up to 120kg and 

deadlifted up to 225kg. 

The championship was Yang’s 

first international competition. 

“I had been overseas before 

but never this far . . . it was very 

different to local competitions 

as it is so far from home, so I 

don’t have the support from my 

entire family as well, and just 

being on a bigger stage brings 

a bit of unwanted stress and 

anxiety,” she said. 

“Leading up to the 

competition I was training 

around six days a week . . . at a 

small gym called Limit Zero, 

and everyone has been very 

supportive of me.” 

She has been powerlifting for 

about four years. 

Yang broke her national squat 

record earlier this year for her 

weight class and lifted 130kg – 

nearly double her body weight.

age and weight division is 

145kg, a record which has not 

been broken for eight years. 

Now she’s back in the 

country, Yang has recently 

finished her NCEA Level 3 

exams, going straight from the

“I don’t really know what’s 

next as I move up an age class 

next year. I also start university 

next year which will be a new 

challenge for me,” said Yang.

biggest investments you may make during

It is, therefore, necessary to decide who 

will be the benefactor/s of your property and 

belongings should you suddenly pass away. To 

do this, you need to create a will. A will states 

who receives what in the event of your death. 

According to the Public Trust, over 50% 

of New Zealanders do not have a will. Young 

people, aged from 25 to 39 years, who are 

financially independent, feature highly in this 

area, and yet they are a group more likely to 

indulge in adventurous holidays and take part 

in risky extreme sports. Accumulated assets of 

this age group might include a bike, car, TV, 

house, and furniture, along with a vast range 

of electronic and digital gear. 

With the arrival of a family, having a will in 

place is even more essential and yet, according 

to the survey taken in 2014, only 30% of 25-40 

year-olds, with children, have a will in place.

Save time and money

Four steps to creating a will

After looking at options 

for traditional bollards, 

Hub Hornby senior centre 

manager Jason Marsden 

said while there were a lot, 

there were not many that 

were “actually capable of 

stopping a vehicle at speed.” 

Said Marsden: “Most are 

more visual markers to

vehicle spaces. 

“Those that are capable 

of stopping a vehicle 

require major belowground 

installation 

works which adds a huge 

amount of cost and once 

installed it really cannot 

be relocated.” 

Marsden then set about 

looking for mass-based 

above-ground options. 

“Whils there were some 

available in New Zealand, 

typically they were on the small 

side and I was sceptical about 

their ability to stop a vehicle 

travelling at speed which could 

potentially just push them aside 

rendering them useless,” he 

said. 

Marsden settled on the shape 

based on a chess pawn and 

wen through many iterations 

looking at proportions, base 

size and height, along with the 

size of the top sphere while 

considering the centre of mass 

and its stability. 

“The Hub has a culture of innovation, 

so I set about designing 

something that would meet 

our requirements. The target 

weight was 1.5t and would require 

lifting points to be able to 

be easily placed and relocated,” 

said Marsden. 

“Further, something that 

would be pedestrian and 

trolley-friendly without corners 

or sharp edges. Once I was 

happy with the design, I then 

had to locate a company that 

could produce them.”

was located just down the road 

in Rolleston. 

Said Marsden: “Cancast had 

the skills and knowledge to 

produce the mould, design the 

required internal reinforcing 

to incorporate the single top 

lifting bolt and successfully 

cas the bollards to a very high 

standard of finish. 

“We are very happy with the 

result and have received a lot of 

positive feedback.”
