Gift-wrapping
on a budget
As we know, Christmas is an expensive time of
year, so finding ways of saving a few dollars can help
ease the budget. One creative way to save is, instead
of buying rolls of gift wrap, make your own from
materials you have around the home, which has the
added bonus of reducing waste.
Before you start, though, choose a flat surface such
as a table or hard floor for the task. This will make it
easier, and the wrapping will look more professional.
Recycling is easy to do with gift-wrapping. For
example, those numerous paper bags you have
stashed away in the kitchen drawer are ideal,
especially for odd-shaped gifts. To give them a
Christmassy look, glue on some left-over pieces of
wrapping paper from last year or cut out images
from used Christmas cards and add a candy cane or
chocolate with the gift tag.
Wrapping your gifts in fabric will give them a
unique and quirky look that’s sure to intrigue the
recipient. You could cut up a garment you no longer
wear or look out those left-over pieces from curtains
or clothing you have made. Tie the gift with fabric
ribbon to complete the effect.
Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping
is another useful way of recycling and saving money.
Again, you could add a festive look by glueing on
pieces of used Christmas wrapping or cut-up cards.
For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look
Christmas giving
like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard
around the item, then put it inside a sheet of recycled
wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up
the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured
ribbon.
For that special gift in a small box, kitchen foil is
ideal. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive
look, which you could complete with bright-coloured
ribbon.
Use a container, such as a jar or tin, as part of
the gift. Fill it with chocolates, nuts or home-made
biscuits and wrap in clear cellophane tied with
bright-coloured ribbon.
Te Huanui’s annual summer cash and carry exhibition takes
on a slightly different format this year. More market, less gallery
in style, it has artists from the Selwyn area and slightly beyond,
clearing out their studios of experiments, maybes and seconds
(slightly flawed artworks), with much of the artwork reasonably
priced.
The Summer Market/Studio Clear Out exhibition will run from
Friday, December 1 through until late January 2024. While no
official opening will be held, three late nights will be running
from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesdays December 6, 13 and 20,
with drinks and nibbles provided. So, grab a group of friends and
shop local and handmade this Christmas.
Gallery 2 will also be brimming with beautiful artworks by
artist members, suitable for gifts also.
Te Huanui is open 11am to 2pm,
Tuesday to Thursday and 10am to
4pm Friday to Sunday, closing for the
holiday period Saturday, December
23, and reopening Tuesday, January 9,
