Rural Telethon: the “Big Feed”
• By Isabelle Teresa
Thursday 14 December is the day –
the day of the Big Feed. This live rural
telethon is organised by Meat the Need,
a three-year-old charity that is farmerfounded
and farmer-led.
Produce, in the form of premium
mince and milk, is donated by farmers
and put into the hands of foodbanks and
community organisations, who already
know the needs of their local community
and have the channels to distribute the
support.
Financial donations are also very
welcome. Anyone can donate a “Virtual
Animal”, to their choice of amount, by
credit card or internet banking. Rural
business supporters are also welcomed.
There’s still just time to organise and
register any fundraising event – get this
registered by Friday 8 December and
hold it any time through to the big day.
Fundraising events and totals get special
shout-outs during the telethon, and you
can even submit video footage of your
event.
Donate now!
The website is open for donation
pledges now: meattheneed.org
The charity accepts sheep, beef or deer,
and also milk. It works with livestock
reps such as Silver Fern Farms, and with
milk processors such as Fonterra and
Miraka, to streamline the process of how
donations are enacted. The website has
easy-to-use forms to make this happen.
On the Day
The live rural telethon runs from
6am to 8pm on Thursday 14 December,
livestreamed from Lincoln University.
In the classic tradition of NZ telethons,
there are lively hosts, public phone-ins,
running total updates, wacky challenges
and general mayhem.
Hosts this year are former professional
boxer turned community leader Dave
Letele, celebrity TV host Matt Chisholm,
and dairy farmer and co-founder, Wayne
Langford.
Great cause
100% of donations goes directly into
feeding families. Last year, in its very first
year, this event raised 1.2 million meals
for foodbanks across the country.
Meat the Need says: “Ultimately, our
aim is for no one to go hungry in NZ. We
also believe everyone should have access
to the nutritious protein that is grown
right here in NZ.”
