Iconic Kingswood back on the road

IT WAS the VIP car of choice
during the 1974 Commonwealth
Games in Christchurch.
And now one of the distinctive
Holden Kingwoods will be part
of the Santa Parade in New
Brighton on Saturday.
The Kingswood is the New
Brighton Museum’s showpiece
in the parade, which starts at
10.30am.
Museum president Wayne
Hawker said the vehicle is “the
jewel in their crown”.
“After the games, the
Kingswoods were sold off. This
particular vehicle was bought by
the Freakish family and has been
owned by the same family ever
since.
“While its owner, Clint, is
based in Nelson, parents Paul
and Heather care for the car
which is based here.”
The parade will take place on
the corner of Marine Pde and
Hawke St, alongside the seaside
market which opens at 10am.
There will be an array of arts
and crafts, as well as gift-ware
to choose from alongside food,
a bouncy castle for children and
free face painting.
Santa will arrive on New
Brighton Beach at 10.15am and
at about 11.30am, the market
entertainment will begin until
the closure of the event at 2pm.

There is the chance for
children to meet and sit with
Santa for family photos, for a
gold coin donation.
Santa will also be available at
the museum at 8 Hardy Street
for the three weekends left of
December, from 1 to 4pm.
The Holden Kingswood is in
its original condition (upholstery,
pinstripes, paint) and will be
driven during the parade.

will run from January 13-28
and will feature the Kingswood
alongside a log book that logs
where each car went and with
whom at the games.

Also on display will be a
25-pound gun used for the 21
Royal Salutes when the Queen
came to Christchurch and
some of the blue, white and
red plastic capes worn by local
school children at the opening
ceremony to create the game’s
flag.
