rt Dubai Contemporary presents <strong>the</strong><br />

very best <strong>in</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge contemporary<br />

art from around <strong>the</strong> world, with<br />

a particular focus on art and artists from <strong>the</strong><br />

Global South. For our 17th edition, <strong>the</strong> fair<br />

welcomes 72 contemporary exhibitors from<br />

more than 50 cities spann<strong>in</strong>g five cont<strong>in</strong>ents.<br />

The 2024 edition will welcome several exhibitors<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first time, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Peres<br />

Projects, Gajah, and Voloshyn as well as<br />

many who are return<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> fair follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hiatus, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Alm<strong>in</strong>e Rech, Franco Noero,<br />

Nature Morte, Vadehra and Tanit. The<br />

fair will also showcase 21 Dubai-based exhibitors,<br />

mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> largest presentation to<br />

date, and reflect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued growth of<br />

Dubai as an <strong>in</strong>ternational cultural hub. This<br />

edition also sees <strong>in</strong>creased representation<br />

of lead<strong>in</strong>g South and South-East Asian,<br />

Middle Eastern and <strong>in</strong>ternational exhibitors.<br />

This growth reflects <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ence of <strong>the</strong>se creative centres,<br />

reflects Dubai’s expand<strong>in</strong>g population and<br />

communities and underscores <strong>the</strong> unique<br />

role Art Dubai plays as <strong>the</strong> primary <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

platform for art from <strong>the</strong>se regions.<br />

BAWWABA<br />

B<br />

awwaba - mean<strong>in</strong>g gateway <strong>in</strong> Arabic<br />

- focuses on highly curated solo presentations<br />

of artists from <strong>the</strong> Global<br />

South and features artworks made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 12<br />

months prior to, or specifically for, Art Dubai.<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Museum of Modern Art (MAMM)<br />

<strong>in</strong> Medell<strong>in</strong>, Colombia, <strong>the</strong> 2024 edition of<br />

Bawwaba is entitled Sanación / Heal<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

presents a series of artistic practices that<br />

explore heal<strong>in</strong>g on a personal and spiritual<br />

but also social, historical and political level,<br />

exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se vary<strong>in</strong>g<br />

scales of <strong>the</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g process relate. A selection<br />

of ten solo projects will spotlight artists<br />

who th<strong>in</strong>k of art as a place of reckon<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

heal<strong>in</strong>g, and com<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r. At <strong>the</strong> same<br />

time, <strong>the</strong>ir work confronts social and political<br />

issues, engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> critical dialogue, and<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g a sense of community and social<br />

justice. Through a variety of mediums, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, sculpture, video, and performance,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se bodies of work exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

ways <strong>in</strong> which art can function as a catalyst<br />

for transformation and change, compar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

how <strong>the</strong>se processes change from country<br />

to country or people to people.<br />
