New year, new
hair style?

It’s that time of year
when we’re predicting
what’s hot and what’s
not in the world of hair
and fashion.
So as not to be left out, here’s my
take on what new (and not so new)
hair trends will be emerging in 2024.
I believe (and really hope) that
this year will see the return of the
haircut. Not just the long, shoulder
length ‘beach-wave’ trim of recent
years, but a shorter, sharper, tailormade
shape.
We’ve been seeing all kinds of
variations of the same long layered
shape for a while now, namely
the ‘Wolf cut’ and the ‘Butterfly
cut’ - more or less the same thing
of medium to long layers with the
main difference being one is more
textured, the other a little longer.
The new kid on the block is called
‘The Mixie’, a hybrid of the classic
pixie cut and the edgy Mullet. The
added security of a slightly longer
back length makes it a great choice
if you fancy going shorter to make
a statement but still want some
softness. The good thing is it can be
adjusted to suit just about any facial
shape and hair type.
Bobs are always on the New
Year’s honours list. But this year
they’re going curly. If you have
natural, textured hair, throw out the
straighteners and embrace that
curl. If your hair is straight, chat to
your stylist about a soft perm that’s
gentle on the roots, yet curlier on
the ends. This is perfect for all short
bob styles and a million miles from
the dreaded big hair of the ‘80s.
The one I really think will shine
through is inspired, posthumously,
by one of the greatest style icons of
all time - Princess Diana. Elizabeth
Debicki has done a stunning job
portraying the late Princess in the
last season of The Crown. The way
she wore her hair, not identical but
very close to Diana’s, has created
a beautiful, classic short shape that
looks stylish and timeless. Based
on a classic wedge with shorter
layers and a little texture, it makes
this style versatile, easy to manage
and modern.
Still holding their own into the
new year are old favourites like the
graduated or inverted bob. But be
aware, you need the right type of
hair, face shape and time to style
if you’re thinking about choosing
this. Another is the classic ‘long top
crop’, very short at the back and
sides with a slightly longer, smooth,
sweeping top length.
If you’re thinking about a big
change, always let your stylist know
in advance. They will want to make
extra time to chat with you and work
a little more on your re-style. It’s very
difficult for a busy stylist to create
that extra time on the spur of the
moment.
So be bold, be beautiful and
make a new start with a new style.
