Tourists’ lucky escape
after trees stop 100m fall
• By Dylan Smits
A CARLOAD of tourists – one
aged 88 – hung upside down,
staring down a 100m drop, after
they crashed off a road near
Duvauchelle.
Akaroa chief fire officer Mark
Thomson has spoken to The Star
about how lucky the family from
Utah in the United States was.
Their vehicle slipped off the
shingle Duvauchelle Stock Route,
and was only stopped from
plummeting 100m by
trees which brought the car to a
halt.
When Thomson’s crew got
to the scene, the driver had
managed to get out of the vehicle
but the rest were trapped inside.
“They were hanging upside
down staring down that drop,
so they were very scared and
worried,” said Thomson.
“If the trees weren’t there, they
would have carried on for quite
some time. It would have been a
completely different result.”
The group were relatively
unscathed from the ordeal,
which happened last Wednesday
about 1.30pm.
When firefighters got to the
scene it was clear the car could
still fall.
“They weren’t safe from falling
until we used the winch to secure
the vehicle. They calmed down a
bit, but even then they were still
very worried,” said Thomson.
WHEN GIRL, a six-year-old
border collie huntaway cross,
was cradled unresponsive
from a burning bach,
firefighters feared the worst.
Fortunately once the
flames were extinguished,
they were able to suggest Kate
Robinson consider another
appropriate descriptor for her
beloved pet.
“They said I should call
her ‘Lucky’,” she said, while
recounting Girl’s gradual
recovery from severe smoke
inhalation.
Volunteers responding to
the call at Robinsons Bay,
Banks Peninsula, three
days after Christmas, used
breathing apparatus to revive
Girl, who continued along
the road to full recovery in
Fendalton yesterday.
A neighbour alerted the
Akaroa Volunteer Fire
Brigade and Robinson’s
father Lee, who along with
other family members,
noticed smoke rising above
the jetty while enjoying a late
afternoon barbecue while
boating on the bay.
Christchurch equal-coolest city in 2023
CHRISTCHURCH was the
equal-coolest main centre in
2023, tied with Dunedin, the
National Institute of Water and
Atmospheric Research says.
Of the six main centres,
Tauranga was the wettest and
sunniest, Dunedin was the driest,
Auckland was the warmest,
and Wellington was the least
sunny.
Last year was New Zealand’s
second hottest on record and
among the cloudiest.
Globally, 2023 was confirmed
yesterday as the warmest year
on record, but in New Zealand
the record belongs to 2022.
Data from NIWA shows its
seven weather stations recorded
eight months last year when
temperatures were above average
or well above average.
May and September were the
warmest on record, coming in
1.1 deg C and 2 deg C above
the 1991-2020 monthly averages.
NIWA says the result is
“astounding”.
On the other hand August
was relatively cool with temperatures
below average. NIWA
says it is the first month to have
a temperature below average
since 2017.
Lake Tekapo recorded the
most sunshine hours last year
with 2658.
NIWA principal
scientist
Christopher
Brandolino
says he hopes
people don’t
become acclimatised
to
all the data
showing record
temperatures.
“I hope it doesn’t become
white noise, all these record
Christopher
Brandolino
years. I hope people think
about what is happening.”
NIWA’s annual report states:
“Climate change continues to
influence New Zealand’s longterm
temperature trend, which
has warmed at a rate of approximately
1.17 degrees C (±0.2
deg C) per century according to
NIWA’s seven-station series.”
Last year was also the fourth
cloudiest on record.
Meanwhile, it was not as wet
as a year of floods up north
might suggest. NIWA says it
was the 21st wettest year.
The family was about 300m
along the stock route from the
Duvauchelle settlement when the
car’s outer wheels went into a soft
edge of the gravel road, causing
it to slip two metres down a steep
drop, where it came to a rest
against the trees.
The middle-aged male driver
managed to escape the car but the
other four passengers remained
trapped until they
were freed by the
fire crew using the
jaws of life. The
rescue took just
under an hour.
“They were
about it. Our
Thomson.
“They were very, very relieved
and very grateful. They couldn’t
believe we were volunteers.”
Thomson said the 88-year-old
managed to get herself out when
a window was removed by the fire
crew.
Thomson said he supports additional
guiding motorists to the shortest
the safest.
“What you’ve got to do is put
in the shortest route excluding
gravel. A lot of tourists don’t think
about GPS, it will take you the
shortest route no matter what the
roads like.”
Akaroa police senior constable
Anita Osborne said the major factor
contributing to the crash was
the condition of the road edge.
She said the driver was not
speeding or being careless.
Maintenance of unpaved back
roads like the Duvauchelle Stock
Route can push gravel to the edge,
making the road look wider, said
Osborne.
“The grass grows up and looks
like a solid part and it isn’t. A
drive past road inspection doesn’t
always pick this up.”
City council streets maintenance
manager Steve Guy said
council engineers have assessed
the site and are considering what
could be done to strengthen the
road’s edge.
“Additional signage and sight
rails are being considered,” said
Guy.
Osborne said city council contractors
have set up a temporary
warning sign at the crash site at
her request.
Although the neighbour
opened a door to the property,
dense smoke prevented him
from retrieving Girl from the
lounge.
“The smoke was so intense
they had to close the doors again
and wait for the firefighters to
get her out. They had to wait
seven or so minutes for someone
to get in there and get her,” Kate
Robinson said.
“When I got there and saw the
state she was in . . . she couldn’t
walk and (was) struggling to
breathe. She was pretty much
out to it and not looking very
good.”
A veterinarian, who was
fortuitously in the vicinity, then
continued Girl’s treatment,
administering antibiotics and
steroids.
“She got a couple of shots and
bounced back really quickly,
then she did decline a bit later,”
Kate Robinson said.
“She was really lethargic . . .
coughing. We had to carry her
out to the toilet. It’s only been
the last couple of days that she’s
fully recovered. We’re really,
really lucky.”
Although the fire – believed to
be caused by an electrical fault –
extensively damaged the kitchen
and lounge, Lee Robinson was
grateful.
“I looked over (from the
boat) and I could see the smoke
pouring out of the roof. It was a
bit unnerving, but never mind,
we’re alive,” he said.
“We were five minutes off
losing everything; we got out of
it by the skin our teeth.
“There was a lot of damage but
we could have lost a dog, a bach
(built by Lee’s father Matthew
in 1953), and 30 years of native
planting.
“Baches up the hillside,
everything was at risk. We were
so lucky, I can’t say enough
about those guys. The fire
brigade was magnificent.”
AFTERMATH:
Girl was found
on a couch in
the lounge by
firefighters feeling
their way through
the smoke-filled
room.
LUCKY GIRL:
Girl, who has
recovered from
a near death
experience, with
owner Kate
Robinson.
chief fire officer Mark Thomson
credited his crew for finding Girl
in challenging circumstances
after arriving on the scene seven
minutes after the alarm was
sounded.
“It was a black dog in a black
smoke-filled room on a black
couch so the guys did very, very
well to find her and put BA
(breathing apparatus) on.”
Still, the scenario looked grim
when they emerged: “Its head
was limp, it didn’t look good,”
he said.
So Thomson, his firefighters,
and volunteers from Little
River were amazed when Girl
returned from her vet visit while
they were mopping up.
“When she came back every
single one of them was like
‘is this the same dog?’” Kate
Robinson said.
“She was very, very close (to
death). They were all really
stoked she was ok.”
IN A move that may
ruffle rivals’ feathers, The
Warehouse is selling cartons
of a dozen Farmer Brown fresh
colony eggs for $5 in all its
stores.
The “everyday low price” deal
was brought in after The Warehouse
sold thousands of cartons
when it ran the same deal in
December.
“We hatched this plan after
seeing how well Kiwis responded
to the $5 price as part of our
daily deals promotion, and we
hope plenty of smart and savvy
shoppers get down to The Warehouse
to grab a carton of eggs,”
said company spokesperson
Jenny Epke.
The $5 deal rivals all of New
Zealand’s biggest supermarkets,
with the popular Farmer
Brown branded eggs currently
selling for $8.39 at Countdown
and New World, and $7.59 at
Pak’nSave, according to the
supermarkets’ websites.
“We’re focusing on bringing
grocery prices down in a tough
grocery market, and are striving
to be the cheapest go-to for
breakfast and lunchbox essentials
for Kiwi families,” Epke said.
“We’re tackling the price of
grocery essentials one-by-one –
we’ve got $4.30 butter, $3 milk,
$1.25 bread, $8 cheese and now
$5 eggs as another key staple.
The price of food is a huge
challenge that Kiwi families are
navigating and they deserve to
have access to the essentials at
reliable and affordable prices.”
The $8 cheese is a 700g block
and $13.99 at New World
stores.
The latest move by The Warehouse
has been welcomed by
Consumer NZ, which says lower
pricing drives competition.
“New Zealand has been crying
out for more players to take
on the supermarket duopoly,
so we’re pleased to see that The
Warehouse is not only offering
Gemma
Rasmussen
sharp pricing to
their customers
but on staples
like eggs,” head
of advocacy
and research
Gemma Rasmussen
said.
While The
Warehouse
would be making
little money off the sale, it
would be likely to bring in more
customers, she said.
“This is called a ‘loss leader’,
where, despite making a potentially
small profit on this ‘leading’
product, The Warehouse
will attract shoppers to their
store, who will be likely to pick
up other pantry essentials or
fresh produce on their way to
the checkout,” she said.
It is the latest move in The
Warehouse’s attempts to rival
the supermarket duopoly after
launching a fresh produce trial
in six selected stores around the
country in February last year.
The $5 Farmer Brown deal is
available in every Warehouse
store, with a limit of six cartons
Double
tragedy for
family after
horror crash
THE TWO people who died in
a crash in North Canterbury on
Monday were two members of the
same family.
Michael Wong, 39, and his
mother-in-law, who was visiting
from Malaysia, were killed in
the crash, while his daughter
Bernice, 7, reportedly has to
undergo multiple surgeries to fix
her hip and leg injuries and her
grandfather is fighting to survive
in ICU.
The crash happened on State
Highway 1 near Sefton.
Michael Wong’s son Gabriel,
10, suffered a broken arm and
possible PTSD from witnessing
the horrible crash, according to
a Givealitlepage set up for wife
Evelyn Wong and her devastated
family.
A friend of Wong’s who set up
the page, which has already raised
more than $14,000, said: “It was
just the eighth day of the new
2024 . . . it was full of hopes and
supposedly a fun summer trip for
the family of Evelyn.”
Police said it appeared one of
the two vehicles involved in the
crash had crossed the centre line.
Speedy
lifesavers
rescue
paraglider
• By Dylan Smits
A SURF lifesaver has described
the tricky rescue of a paraglider
in heavy swells who crashed
onto rocks at Taylors Mistake.
Will Simmons and Callum
Gard were on duty on Saturday
when they saw a paraglider in
trouble about 3.30pm.
“We could see him dropping,
dropping, dropping, so we
launched the boat out and got
there as fast as we could,” said
Simmons.
It was a relief the paraglider
managed to land uninjured on
the rocks instead of in the water.
Simmons and Gard arrived
at the site in an inflatable rescue
boat within five minutes.
Simmons held the IRB in position
just long enough for the
paraglider, aged in his 30s, to get
onboard before jetting off.
“We had to get out of there
before the next wave hit. I don’t
know how he would have managed
to get from where he was
back up the hill. He needed us to
bring him back to shore.”
The paraglider, who had
misjudged the updraft, was
grateful for the rescue.
“Back in our day there were
THE LEAD singer of one of the country’s
most prominent bands, The Feelers, is
before the courts having allegedly failed to
stop for police and refusing a blood test.
Court documents seen by the NZ Herald
allege that James Charles Gallienne Reid,
whose occupation is listed as musician,
committed the offences on
Boxing Day.
Charging documents claim Reid
failed to stop for police in Christchurch.
He’s also charged with having
allegedly failed or refused to undergo
without delay an evidential
breath test, and refused an officer’s
requirement to permit a medical
officer to take a blood specimen.
Failing to have a blood specimen taken
carries a maximum sentence of two years’
imprisonment and a fine of $6000.
When the NZ Herald contacted Reid
for comment he declined to talk about the
charges, and said he was only interested in
talking about global current events.
James Reid
“Would you like to talk about some
other things that are not bulls***?” he said.
“I’m a f***ing rock and roll star. What is
my point in the world if not to say something
useful?”
He’s due to reappear in the district court
next month.
Reid is the lead singer of the band which
formed in Christchurch in 1993.
The band’s first album, Supersystem,
went to No 1 in New Zealand
in 1998.
According to his bio on his
website, Reid is one of the country’s
“most successful songwriters and
musicians” with the band selling
more albums than any other New
Zealand band.
The Feelers are currently on The
Grain silo collapses, covers cars
A GRAIN silo at the Champion Flour Mill
on Moorhouse Ave collapsed on Sunday
evening, spilling out onto a neighbouring
car yard.
Champion Flour said it was working
with local authorities to determine what
caused the grain storage to cave in at its
Moorhouse Avenue site in Addington on
Sunday.
Peter Cullen of neighbouring Value
Cars Warehouse said about 12 mostly
older trade-in vehicles were damaged by
the wave of grain that spilt out onto the
vehicles near the row of silos.
Cullen said Champion Flour had been in
touch and had engineers assessing the site
for safety before clearing the debris.
A spokeswoman for Fire and Emergency
New Zealand said there wasn’t any risk to
the wider area and said everyone had been
accounted for.
Woman mocked for trying to
stop pregnant shark’s death
• By Melissa Nightingale
A WOMAN who tried to
intervene when a pregnant shark
was dragged onto New Brighton
Beach and cut open alive was
sworn at and called an “activist”
and “pathetic woman”.
Members of public were
outraged last week when a video
emerged online of the school
shark thrashing and arching in
pain as a group of people slit its
belly open, allowing dozens of
live baby sharks to spill out onto
the sand.
Those at the scene returned
the pups to the water, but
witness Adele Ross said most of
them were quickly picked off by
seagulls.
Ross was visiting New
Brighton Beach with a friend
when she spotted a commotion
down by the water.
“It looks from a distance
like they were trying to drown
and stab a white dog, it was
incredibly violent,” she said.
“By the time I got there they
had slashed the side of its neck.”
She said the group consisted of
two teenage boys she estimated
to be about 14, and one
“supervising adult”.
“I said ‘what the hell is going
on here?’ He was like ‘mind your
own business, you don’t know
anything about fishing.’”
Ross, who comes from
a hunting and fishing
background, said she tried to
explain to the man the shark
had likely come close to shore
to give birth, and the way they
were killing the shark meant the
meat would be spoiled anyway.
She said the man swore at her,
calling her an “activist” and a
“pathetic woman”.
“I was like ‘well, it’s a waste of
an animal and it’s a waste of the
meat now, can’t you just finish
it?’”
She said the man continued
but I’m a six-foot, bloody – quite
a large lady.”
The shark was still alive even
after they’d scooped pups out of
its belly twice, she said.
Ross began taking photos of
the man and explained she was
going to provide them to the
relevant authorities. She said he
quickly left the scene.
The boys soon followed,
carrying what was left of the
shark.
When Ross and her friend
went up onto the pier, they saw
the boys and the man with a
larger group of about 12 other
men, cutting up the shark and
throwing all the meat back into
the ocean.
If she could send them a
message, Ross said she wanted
them to know “that wasn’t the
right way”.
“If this is the sport that
you want your children to
pursue, make sure you have the
knowledge and skills and time
to teach them the correct way.”
She also advised against
catching sharks altogether.
Fisheries New Zealand has
said it will “follow up” with the
people in the video and advise
them on their responsibilities
under the Animal Welfare Act,
but Ross said she believed there
should be a prosecution for the
cruel nature of the shark’s death.
Firefighters’ desperate bid to
save colleague and ‘great mate’
• By Daniel Alvey and Ben
Tomsett
WHEN volunteer firefighters
got the call to attend a medical
emergency, the address was far
too familiar.
It belonged to one of their
own, highly respected senior
firefighter and great mate Gavin
Lack. The 51-year-old had
suffered a major medical event.
Some volunteers raced directly
to Lack’s home in Lincoln, bypassing
normal procedure to go
to the station and depart to the
callout from there.
They worked desperately on
their colleague and were soon
joined by other volunteers and
ambulance paramedics, but Lack
died soon after.
“A couple of us knew straight
away it was Gav’s place so we
went straight to the job and the
truck followed,” Lincoln senior
station officer Kyle Steans said.
“We did what we could but it
wasn’t to be,” said Steans.
Steans said it was one of the
toughest calls he’s ever had to
take in his 25 years in the fire
service.
“It was pretty sad day. The last
few days have been rough for
everyone in the brigade.”
Steans said the brigade had been
focusing on looking after each
other since the tragedy last week.
“We had a debrief at the job,
and after at the station, and some
brigade-based catch ups over the
weekend. A lot of members have
been also checking in, and visiting
others as well.”
Lack’s service with the brigade
spanned 12 years, four months
PHOTOS: LINCOLN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
and 19 days, from August 17,
2011 to January 4.
Steans said he had known Lack
since before he became a firefighter.
He was kind and gentle.
“He stands out as someone
with a common-sense, practical
approach and a calm demeanour.
I can’t recall ever seeing him angry,
even during moments when
he might have been frustrated.
He’s a fantastic person to work
with, and we’ve been good mates
from the start,” he said.
Lack was passionate about
photography, which is how he
became a volunteer firefighter.
When the Lincoln station
sounded, Lack would turn up,
follow the crews to a fire which
he would then photograph.
He soon became their official
brigade photographer and
eventually joined the brigade as
operational support.
In 2016 he graduated as a
firefighter and eventually worked
his way up to become a senior
firefighter.
Lack also became a Fire and
Emergency NZ staff member,
having roles as a fire investigator
in the risk reduction team, in
logistics and as a member of
the Urban Search and Rescue
team.
Steans said Lack quickly rose
to senior level within the brigade,
and undoubtedly had the
potential to achieve even more.
RARE VISIT: Bottlenose dolphins frolicking in the sun
French Bay on Sunday.
Bottlenose dolphins delight onlookers
A RARE visit by bottlenose
dolphins to Akaroa Harbour
has delighted swimmers and
kayakers.
The pod was estimated to be
made up of as many as 100 of the
dolphins and was seen just after
7am on Sunday near the Akaroa
lighthouse and wharf.
The animals were feeding in
the water directly off Akaroa
township by about 9.30am
and moved towards the
heads after about an hour, but
stayed in the area until the
afternoon.
The dolphins were followed by
several boaties, kayakers and jet
ski riders.
The endangered Hector’s
dolphins are often seen in
Akaroa Harbour, but it is very
unusual to find bottlenose
dolphins there.
George Waghorn, part owner
and skipper at Akaroa Dolphins,
said it had been about a year
since a smaller pod was seen in
the same area.
He said the dolphins had put
on a show for the sightseers, who
were delighted to see them.
“It was pretty amazing to see
them. They were jumping and
hanging around, and even
our 2-year-old daughter got
to go for a ride on the dinghy
and she was screaming and
loving it.
“They looked all really healthy
– they were doing front flips,
back flips, belly flops, side flops
tail slaps.”
The pod had left the harbour
by Sunday afternoon, but
Waghorn was now expecting
bottlenose dolphin sightings to
become more common in the
area.
A RESEARCH team has received
$360,000 in Marsden funding
to develop technology to assess
and inform water use and
infrastructure.
Canterbury University senior
lecturer Dr Derek Li and Professor
Pedro Lee are using technology
to combat water loss and a
lack of knowledge across water
infrastructure in New Zealand.
Twenty per cent of drinking
water is lost to leakage, 90 per
cent of the piping network is
unable to provide accurate data
on its condition and 50 per cent
of water use is unmetered, meaning
there is extremely limited
knowledge on water use across
the country.
Li, the principal investigator
of the grant, said unlike the
electricity industry, where usage
can be tracked by customers, in
urban settings the general consumer
has little understanding
of water usage – unless they are
paying for it.
“When we don’t know how we
use water, we don’t care, because
we don’t have feedback about
that information,” he said.
The grant will allow Li and Lee
to continue previous research
from the first round of Marsden
funding they received for remote
sensing technology; exploring
a discovery from the initial research
where the ability to track
pressure signals when taps were
turned on or off was uncovered.
The technology being developed
will continuously and simultaneously
extract water usage
and pipeline conditions, simply
by listening to background pressure
noise in the network.
It means a detailed picture can
be formed of household water
use and the percentages that are
used from the garden sprinklers
to showers and toilets across
New Zealand. The information
received will inform water
conservation strategies and
provide accurate asset condition
information.
Said Li: “There are two contributions
to this; the first is broken
infrastructure – these pipelines
(in New Zealand) were deployed
50-70 years ago and they’re quite
old – and the second is the excessive
usage of water.”
The technology would also
provide the ability to monitor
water use during times of
drought, ensuring usage is
optimised.
Li and the team has been using
existing piping networks across
Canterbury University and the
wider Canterbury region to test
the technology. He successfully
deployed it in the Waimakariri
District, finding two pipes in
poor condition which burst
within a few weeks of being
identified.
“These algorithms will be
trained and tested using a
database established through
comprehensive experiments,
supported by the state-of-the-art
laboratory and real-world water
supply networks at the University
of Canterbury campus,” he
said.
The technology will provide
detailed data on how New
Zealand uses its water, and
facilitate future research on
water conservation strategies,
as well as providing accurate
asset condition information to
optimise the rehabilitation of
ageing water pipeline networks.
weeK Two: starting out
In week 2 you will extend the time of your sessions by a fraction. The challenge is to keep the intensity controlled.
There is no need to get really puffed and tired. Remember the talk test. If you exercise with others the talk test comes
automatically. If it is just you, talk to yourself but perhaps not too loud!….We can divide what we call the submaximal
pace up in 3 zones.
1. Easy: this is a pace where you are not too puffed and the talk test is not even a test. At this stage this is the zone
you spent most of your time in as it will give you some initial conditioning without the risk of soreness or muscle
strain
2. Steady: this is slightly faster than easy; it can also be called a “firm” pace. It takes a bit more effort to talk but you
can still form sentences without having to take an extra breath
3. Moderately hard: this is the pace where you need that extra breath to finish your sentence. You can still talk
and jog at the same time but it becomes more laborious so you tend to shut up and concentrate more on your
rhythm and holding your pace
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for
4 sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and
1 session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
New coach
‘I am a huge believer in
football being enjoyable
for the players to play, and
entertaining for the spectators
to watch’ – Ryan Edwards
likely to up
the tempo
at United
• By Sam Coughlan
CHRISTCHURCH United’s new
head coach is determined to keep
playing his way, despite a change
of scenery.
Ryan Edwards has joined the
club ahead of the 2024 season,
making the move from Petone
FC, where he oversaw huge
improvements – based around a
high-tempo style of football.
“I am a huge believer in football
being enjoyable for the players
to play, and entertaining for
the spectators to watch,” he said.
United had a slower tempo
last year, playing out from the
goalkeeper and centre-backs, but
the players shouldn’t have much
difficulty adapting to the new
style of play, Edwards said.
“Petone played out from the
back every time so there’s a similarity
in that respect.
“They already have the foundations
so it’s just about learning
the new formations and shapes
and the tempo will come with
practise.”
United won ‘the treble’ last
year – the Southern League,
Chatham Cup and English Cup
– under former coaches Paul Ifill
and Ekow Quainoo, but Edwards
says there’s no pressure for his
new team to be at that level and
win titles straightaway.
“The pressure is more around
achieving different priorities
for the club and for the specific
group.
“I like to see things with a
long-term lens, and so the pressure
for me is around achieving
all those priorities of growing
the academy space, achieving
on-field success and engaging
with the club, the academy and
the community from a first-team
perspective.”
Under the 34-year-old’s guidance,
Petone went from ninth in
Wellington’s Central League to
sixth in his second season then
fourth last year – gaining them
a spot in the National League at
the end of last season.
Edwards said it was a “very
hard” decision to leave all that
progress behind.
“The club wanted me to stay
on.
“I had a three-year contract
that they were wanting to roll
over for another year, and things
were going really well.
“The team had been growing
a lot, and the club had grown a
lot since I’d come in and I was
pretty confident that we were in
a good place to maybe even win
the Central League this year,” he
said.
But after 16 years of living
in the capital, it was time for a
change.
Edwards only moved to
Christchurch this week, but has
already touched base with most
of his players.
“I had phone calls with most of
the group and I was down here
briefly prior to Christmas to sit
down with as many players as I
could.”
His team will be without
a number of last year’s stars
though – National League top
scorer Sam Philip has moved to
Auckland for work, while fellow
Madondo, O’Hagan stand out at classic
• By Sam Coughlan
HIGH JUMPER Keeley
O’Hagan is aiming big after
setting a new competition record
at the classic.
The Old Boys Athletic representative
jumped 1.80m in her
first event of the season – easing
past the old record of 1.69m set
by South Canterbury’s Leanne
McKenzie in 2019.
But she says she’s only just getting
started.
“This was my season opener
for my full approach, it’s only
early in the season and we don’t
YOUNG SPRINT star AJ
Madondo is shocked at the speed
of his success following triumph
in the 100m and 200m events at
the Lovelock Classic in Timaru.
The races were the first time
the 17-year-old from Christ’s
College has raced in a senior
men’s competition and he said he
didn’t have high expectations.
“Once I got out there, I was
quite nervous, but I think I got
the nerves out.
“I’m honestly shocked to have
gone and done the double, but all
glory to God,” he said.
Madondo blitzed his opposition
in the 100m, finishing in
10.97 seconds in his best event,
and pulled out all the stops for
the 200m.
He wasn’t the favourite going
in but a time of 21.84 seconds
was enough to beat favourite
Angus Lyver, who finished in
21.91 seconds.
Said Madondo: “It was a close
race for me and Angus. He runs
21.1 and I only run 21.7, so it was
a big underdog sort of performance.”
The youngster has just finished
year 13 at Christ’s College and
plans to study software engineering
at a college in America.
“I’ve been looking at a few
really anticipate insanely high
heights at the moment,” she said.
In her final event of 2023,
colleges that have sent offers
my way, and I’m just narrowing
down the schools to see what sort
of programme I’ll be doing,” he
said.
Madondo has a stacked finish
to the 2023/2024 season in the
next few months.
“I’ve got the Capital Classic
in Wellington, and the International
Track Meet in February,
and there’ll be minor interclub
competitions in between there
for preparation.
“And then we’ve got club
nationals in March and
potentially under-20 worlds (in
August) depending on how I go
qualifying time-wise,” he said.
to beat it this
The 29-year-old has a
personal-best jump of 1.89m,
set at the Birmingham
Commonwealth Games in 2022
but believes she’s set to beat it.
“All signs and training are
tracking pretty well, so I’m
expecting to be able to pop out a
PB or two this year.”
O’Hagan has two main goals
this year.
“All my preparation is going
towards this year’s Olympic
Games,” she said.
“Get the New Zealand record,
and make the Olympic team.”
The national record currently
stands at 1.92m, set in 1991 by
Tania Murray and has long been
a goal for O’Hagan.
The Olympic qualifying mark
stands at 1.97m, but if O’Hagan
finishes among the top 16
ranked athletes who fail to reach
that mark before the cut-off of
June 30, she will qualify for the
games.
She will next be in action at
the Jumps To Music event in
Hawera on January 24, followed
by Cook’s Classic in Whanganui
on January 27.
is brought about by the quality of the
which is to challenge the margins of
By Loretta & Enzo
For quite a while we have been waiting
to update our newest playground.
Recently, we raised enough money to
purchase new playground equipment,
such as a roundabout, steel spinner,
bouncing surfboards, and a wood log
see-saw. When the items were first put
in, there was a rush to the roundabout,
with many children queuing up, and five
or six people on it at once. The spider
web used to be the main attraction
of the playground, but it was kicked
out of the spotlight with the arrival of
the roundabout and new equipment.
Overall, the new playground additions
are an excellent way to spend our lunch
and morning tea breaks.
Kirkwood Intermediate is a very well
resourced school where all of our
practices are based on solid educational
foundations. We have nine specialist
Technology classrooms, a safe and
vibrant community feel, and stable
professional leadership.
We are an inclusive school with mixed
ability classes, programmes to extend
and enrich all of our children and lots
of opportunities in sport, cultural and
academic areas.
Because we are a state, co-educational
intermediate school, everything we do,
everything we have, and all of our plans
for the future are designed for children
aged 10 -13 years old – our Year 7 and
8 students often called the ‘emerging
adolescent’. These wonderful children
are going through a real growth spurt:
intellectually, emotionally and physically.
The staff at Kirkwood choose to work
with these children, and recognise the
very special attributes and challenges
of this age group. High standards of
behaviour are maintained and our
children are well known for being
respectful, polite and pleasant.
Our children choose to come here after
seeing something about our school
that appeals to them, and I believe our
reputation is second to none. Come and
visit our school and see for yourself what
makes Kirkwood the great school it is.
Welcome! Bible seminars
2024
Building for the future
We are a group of people who love
reading our Bibles together. Our aim is
the interpretation of prophecies, to God’s
promises and what these things mean
for you.
Studying the Bible has many benefits if
we choose to hear and understand – it
gives us wisdom and guidance for this
life, promotes our mental well-being,
helps us find calm in times of stress,
gives us hope and most importantly,
gives us an understanding of who God
really is, and who his son Jesus really is.
Courses are run at an individual’s
pace over school terms. We target key
questions that you may have always
wanted answered and encourage active
participation and enquiring minds. All
course materials will be supplied free of
charge and with no obligation.
people, prepared and re4ady for life”.
We offer a broad curriculum and a large
array of sports and other co-curricular
activities from music and the arts,
robotics to science club, debating to
Evolocity and beyond.
To help us in making our vision a reality
for all learners, we need the modern
facilities to match, and we are fortunate
to be able to work with architect
Baldasso Cortese Noordanus, They
won the Learning Environments Aoteroa
NZ award for a building greater than 8
million for our large Middle Aonga Ake
Construction of our large sports
centre (two full basketball courts, two
classrooms and a weights/exercise gym
is well underway. Then we begin our
new Science building, followed by an
Arts and Culture building. These stateof-the-art
facilities will help our talented
and passionate teachers to truly nurture
our young people, preparing them for
the future.
While the look of the school will change
significantly over the next few years, we
will retain our inclusive culture where
we welcome students from an array
of backgrounds. At Hillmorton High
School we all learn from and with each
other every day, ensuring our learners
High School
2024 Head
Students
The newly appointed 2024 prefect team all recognise
the vast array of opportunities at Burnside High
School and have each made the most of their time in
the junior divisions. Head Prefect Daniel Lough has
enjoyed taking on many of these experiences, meeting
new people and learning new skills throughout his
time here. “I have been able to travel around NZ with
school teams for cross-country and football. I have
also tried new things like competing in Mathematics
and Economics competitions, debating at the Model
EU Forum, playing in a band, and taking on a sport
I had never played before”. Through this role he is
excited to bring many different groups together from
across the school, and to encourage students to get
involved in the amazing experiences Burnside has to
offer.
Head Prefect Emma Boswell is constantly amazed by
the amount of opportunities available to the students
at Burnside High School. She is heavily involved
in the Drama Department including Drama Club,
the Sheilah Winn competition, Showquest and has
done Theatresports in the past. “I feel so honoured
to be a part of a school that offers such incredible
opportunities. Through taking part in a variety of
activities I have been able to meet amazing people
whom I’ve really enjoyed getting to know. I love
learning about people and am in awe of the inclusivity
of people at Burnside High School”. She is excited for
next year to welcome the new students and hopes to
be a role model for students around the school.
Deputy Head Prefect Sebastian Enoka enjoys
making the most of Burnside High School’s nurturing
atmosphere through goal setting and being in a team
environment. He has been involved in both sports
and music playing junior cricket and as a member
of the Senior Boys Basketball team and being in
the Contemporary Band. He has had the ability to
collaborate with a vast array of students from different
backgrounds and interests. “I am super excited to
be a part of this group and to work with the wider
senior leadership team. I hope to positively contribute
to our school as a team player, be a good example
for younger students, and I look forward to getting
to know a wide range of people from multiple year
levels”.
Deputy Head Prefect Saissha Gupta believes that
Burnside’s large size allows for many students to
achieve well academically and demonstrate a wide
range of leadership qualities and strengths. “I believe
that my dedication to education has been supported
by the numerous academic programs that are on offer.”
Transitioning from her role as a North Prefect in 2023
to Deputy Head Prefect this year, she anticipates the
opportunity to connect with fellow leaders in the
OneSchools network across Canterbury. “Within the
Burnside community, I hope other students will see
me as a familiar face who can turn to for help, advice
or just a fun chat.” She wishes to serve as a role model
for other students and encourage them to take full
advantage of the resources Burnside High School
provides to unlock their full potential.
Linwood High
School 1954 -
Te Aratai College
2024: a proud
history of 70 years
Kia ora e te whānau. Nau mai haere mai ki Te Aratai
College – Welcome to Te Aratai College.
Te Aratai College is a place where every learner is
known and valued as an individual and where whānauschool
relationships matter. From Linwood High
School 1954 to our re-opening as Te Aratai College in
2022, our kura continues its proud history as we help
our community’s rangatahi - young people create their
futures.
Te Aratai College is inspiring from the 650-seat
theatre-standard auditorium to the sunny student
centre and student-friendly courtyards. Our
design puts into practice Ngā Uara - our Values:
Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Rangatiratanga and
Tūrangawaewae for personalised learner success. It
reflects the name gifted to us by Ngāi Tūāhuriri when
we returned to our Aldwins Rd site in 2022 after our
rebuild - Te Aratai College, Pathway to the Sea.
Of course, buildings alone do not necessarily
improve education. The relationship with the
teacher – he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata – and
the personalisation of learning are the key for this.
However, there is also no doubt that buildings and
spaces that arise from these community values of
relationships and personalisation contribute hugely to
learner success.
Individuals learn best when who they are – language,
culture, identity – is affirmed. Enhancing the mana
and dignity of the individual is at the heart of Te Aratai
College.
Therefore Te Aratai College believes in a strengthsbased,
pathwayed curriculum starting with each
learner’s strengths. Education at our school is about
seeing the whole person – whakapapa, classroom
learning, sport, music, drama. These developmentally
positive experiences nurture and enrich learners by
contextualising their learning. In this way the learning is
meaningful to the individual and strengths-based.
Our school’s Year 7-13 personalized curriculum creates
aspiration and community. There is age-appropriate
educational and social continuity and multiple
opportunities for leadership so students excel and
develop independence.
We are pleased that our community is valuing our
school’s direction resulting in significant roll-growth,
doubling over the recent years. This has meant that
Stage 2 of our building programme is underway and
Stage 3 will follow.
At Te Aratai College all learners can make their mark
whether academic, cultural or sporting and set their
direction for life after secondary school. Our leavers
are confident and well-prepared for the future, for their
futures.
Papanui High School -
Our school, our success,
our responsibility
“Our aim is simple... to provide the best
education possible for every student.”
At Papanui High School positive
relationships are at the forefront of
what we do. Connecting through a
responsive local curriculum we provide
an opportunity for all students to learn
in a productive and future-focused
environment.
The opportunity to learn from
an innovative and broad
curriculum is critical to
providing a pathway
that meets each
student’s individual
needs. Papanui High
School allows for a
greater range and
flexibility in subject
choice including
the utilization of
the secondary/
tertiary interface. This
reinforces the philosophy
underpinning personalised
learning and is strongly
supported by understanding our
students’ interests, passions, talents, and
ultimately their career aspirations.
We understand that for effective
learning to take place, it has to be
implemented in such a way that
students will be highly engaged. The
school does this in a ‘forward thinking’
way by creating learning environments
that allow our students to see value
in what they do and achieve. Papanui
“PRIDE” is what we represent, and we
demonstrate this by having young adults
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations. The school highly
values the connectedness between
In 2024 we are looking forward to
Mairehau - Principal’s china
delegation strengthens
educational bonds
In September, a Principal’s Delegation
from Canterbury and Otago undertook
a remarkable journey to China in
collaboration with the Christchurch
Chinese Consulate, the Christchurch
Sister Schools Council, Selwyn District
Council, and the Beijing Language
and Culture University. This delegation
aimed to deepen educational
connections and foster friendships
between the two nations. We followed
in the footsteps of Rewi Alley, a great
friend of China.
The trip provided a profound
exploration of China’s
rich and diverse culture,
emphasising its traditions,
customs, and heritage.
The focus was on the
importance of cultural pride
and mutual understanding.
The cultivation of mutual
friendship and collaboration between
New Zealand and Chinese educational
centres was a highlight, reflecting Rewi
Alley’s legacy in fostering international
connections. Positive relationships
forged during the visit are poised to
enhance future collaboration.
Establishing and renewing sister-school
relationships between New Zealand
and Chinese schools was pivotal. These
partnerships hold immense potential for
promoting cultural exchange, personal
growth, and academic excellence,
consistent with Rewi Alley’s vision.
Visits to iconic historical and cultural
sites, including the Great Wall of China
and the Forbidden City, provided a deep
appreciation for China’s rich history
and natural beauty. These experiences
underscored the importance of
preserving cultural heritage and
celebrating the beauty of the natural
environment.
The Principal’s delegation trip
embodied a leadership
philosophy focused on holistic
well-being, personal growth,
and values of cultural pride,
open communication, and
mutual understanding.
The experiences and
relationships formed during
the journey are poised to have
a lasting impact on Mairehau High
School and other schools, serving as
a testament to Rewi Alley’s enduring
legacy and his role in paving the
way for New Zealand schools to
build friendships and collaborations
on an international scale. China’s
transformative and culturally enriching
experience aligns seamlessly with our
school’s commitment to excellence and
global understanding.
It was a privilege and honour to be a
member of the Delegation.
