Thursday January 11 2024 The Star Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Christchurch equal-coolest city in 2023 CHRISTCHURCH was the equal-coolest main centre in 2023, tied with Dunedin, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says. Of the six main centres, Tauranga was the wettest and sunniest, Dunedin was the driest, Auckland was the warmest, and Wellington was the least sunny. Last year was New Zealand’s second hottest on record and among the cloudiest. Globally, 2023 was confirmed yesterday as the warmest year on record, but in New Zealand the record belongs to 2022. Data from NIWA shows its seven weather stations recorded eight months last year when temperatures were above average or well above average. May and September were the warmest on record, coming in 1.1 deg C and 2 deg C above the 1991-2020 monthly averages. NIWA says the result is “astounding”. On the other hand August was relatively cool with temperatures below average. NIWA says it is the first month to have a temperature below average since 2017. Lake Tekapo recorded the most sunshine hours last year with 2658. NIWA principal scientist Christopher Brandolino says he hopes people don’t become acclimatised to all the data showing record temperatures. “I hope it doesn’t become white noise, all these record Christopher Brandolino years. I hope people think about what is happening.” NIWA’s annual report states: “Climate change continues to influence New Zealand’s longterm temperature trend, which has warmed at a rate of approximately 1.17 degrees C (±0.2 deg C) per century according to NIWA’s seven-station series.” Last year was also the fourth cloudiest on record. Meanwhile, it was not as wet as a year of floods up north might suggest. NIWA says it was the 21st wettest year. – RNZ NEWS 3 In Brief Police close central city street in response to incident of self-harm Traffic in the central city was disrupted around rush hour Tuesday when police cordoned off a block of Lichfield St between Colombo and Gloucester Sts in response to an incident involving an individual at risk of self-harm. Police responded about 5.15pm and the police negotiation team was deployed to help resolve the situation. The section of road reopened around 9.30pm. City2Surf: Running for kids CHILDREN encountering a challenging road ahead will benefit from the latest edition of the iconic Les Mills City2Surf fun run in March. Star Media has partnered with the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in Governors Bay, a safe haven for children aged between three and 12-years-old. Established in 1925 as the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home, more than 30,000 Canterbury children have stayed at the facility on a short-term respite basis. Aero Marine Salvage has been contracted as the company for the operation by the vessel’s insurer and owner, Pegasus Fishing Ltd. The 25m fishing vessel ran aground near Fishermans Bay in September and leaked thousands of litres of diesel into the ocean. The cost of the operation is the responsibility of the owner and insurer. Residents continue to fight solar venture A group of Brookside residents are getting ready to fight the second application for a solar farm. KeaX is applying for resource consent to build a 111ha solar farm on land about 10km north of Leeston. Retired ecologist Ray Henderson lives about 500m from the planned installation and argues the panels would cause environmental harm to the soil. KeaX managing director Campbell McMath disputes Henderson’s view and says the project will improve soil condition. It is the second time the company has applied for a resource consent for the land along Buckleys and Branch Drain Rds. The first was declined in March last year.
