Rubbish, parking issues a blow
BLOW: An otherwise successful Kite Day was marred by parking and rubbish issues, with 8000 people flocking to New Brighton.
• By Chris Barclay
WASTE DISPOSAL and parking
issues are under review following
New Brighton’s annual Kite Day,
with Coastal Ward councillor
Celeste Donovan demanding a
smoother running of the next
edition.
While weather conditions
were optimum – a peak wind
gust of 46km/h and a maximum
temperature of 25.6 deg C – for
smooth sailing for the
popular event.
converged on Marine
premium, prompting
some motorists to
Donovan was at the
beach and sought answers
from council staff on
Monday after receiving
adverse feedback during,
and after the event.
Nor’West News was
told 12 extra rubbish bins
were placed at the event
area by city council events
and arts manager Lucy
Blackmore, but Donovan was
undeterred.
“I still think there’s more than
needs to be done in terms of the
waste management strategy in
general,” she said.
Blackmore said there was no
waste overflow or excess rubbish
when the temporary bins were
removed about 90 minutes after
Kite Day.
But Donovan said that was
groups to clean it up. I saw them
