Overwhelmed?

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way
and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through
me”’ (John 14:6).
The Lord Jesus Christ said it. But
how can a person
be a way to
Heaven? Let’s illustrate.
You are
trapped in your
room on the fifth
floor of a burning hotel. Billows of
suffocating black smoke cut off every
means of escape. Terror grips you.
Horrible death stares you in the face
— thoughts of loved ones, home, and
eternity race through your mind. You
scream for help. You slam the door
shut. But the smoke creeps through
the cracks into your room, grimly reminding
you of sheets of flame licking
hungrily at the building. Sirens shriek.
People are yelling and choking
and dying in wild fright. Paralysed
with fear and in dreadful despair, you
are about to give up all hope when
suddenly a fireman, who has climbed
a ladder to your room, sticks his head
through the window
and shouts, “I’ve
come to save you!”
You look down to the
street below, then
draw back in fear.
“You mean you are going to take
me down that ladder? Surely, there
must be some other way. What about
the stairs? The elevator?...The fire escape?”
The fireman says: “This is no
time to argue. There is no other way. I
am the way! Trust me. I’ll soon have
you down in safety.” The fireman is
your only way out.

He is your only hope. You must
let him save you, or perish in flames.
You yield yourself to him. You trust
him. He is an expert. Before you know
it, you are down on the sidewalk.
Saved! Joy and peace overwhelm you.
The fireman has become your salvation,
your peace, your joy, your way
out of death into life.
The way is a person — You say, “I
know I am a lost sinner, for the Bible
says, ‘All have sinned and fall short of
the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23). How
can I be saved from the wrath to come
and be sure of a home in Heaven?”
There is no hope for you in religion or
morality. Salvation is in the Man at
God’s right hand, who said, ‘The Son
of Man came to seek and save the
lost’ (Luke 19:10).
Ponder: ‘Christ Jesus came into
the world to save sinners’ (I Timothy
1:15). The Son of God gave His life at
Calvary to bear your sins, and rose
again from the dead, that He might
become your Lord and Saviour. Salvation
is in Him. Forgiveness of sins,
peace, joy, and satisfaction is found
only in Him. ‘He is our
peace’ (Ephesians 2:14). ‘In Him we
have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins’ (Ephesians
1:7). ’Whoever has the Son has life’ (I
John 5:12).
You are as helpless to save yourself
from eternal doom as you were to
save yourself from that fiery death in
the hotel. There was just one way out
of death—a person. There is only one
way to escape from the lake of fire—a
person, the Lord Jesus Christ. ‘Through
Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed
to you. Through Him everyone
who believes is set free from every sin,
a justification you were not able to obtain
under the law’ (Acts 13:38,39).
’Everyone who believes in Him receives
forgiveness of sins through His
name’ (Acts 10:43). ‘For there is one
God and one Mediator between God
and mankind, the man Christ Jesus’ (I
Timothy 2:5).
The fireman might fail. He is only
human. The Lord Jesus Christ cannot
fail, for He is God! Your part is to receive
Him by faith. ‘To those who belived
in His name, He gave the right to
become children of God’ (John 1:12).
Be sure you have Him. It is not enough
to know about Him: you must make a
decision for Him. Tell Him you receive
Him now.

If you desire God’s
peace to deliver you from
fear of crisis, circumstance,
and conditions of life, you
must:
Recognise why you
have fear — Fear comes
from a lack of trust in God.
“He (Jesus) replied, ‘You of
little faith, why are you so
afraid?’” (Matthew 8:26).
Our fear is a direct result of
our sin and separation from
God. More important than
the fear we face right now
is that our sin truly separates
us from the God of
perfect peace. “For all have
sinned and fall short of the
glory of God” (Romans
3:23).
No matter how much
good we do, we still fall
short. No one is good
enough to overcome fear by
themselves, and more importantly,
to gain access to
the God of Heaven on his
own merit.
Realise the penalty of
sin — “For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life” (Romans
6:23). Christ showed His
great love for us when He
died on the cross to pay our
sin debt. Christ’s love is the
only way to overcome fear
and sin!
Realise Christ loves
you and died for you — “But
God demonstrates His own
love for us in this: while we
were still sinners, Christ
died for us” (Romans 5:8).

There is only one simple decision
you must make. Trust Christ alone as
your Saviour.
“For the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
“Everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved” (Romans
10:13).
Everlasting life and deliverance
from fear is a gift purchased by the
blood of Jesus and offered freely to
those who call upon Him by faith.
You can claim God’s promise for
your salvation right now. “If you declare
with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and
believe in your heart that God raised
Him from the dead, you will be
saved” (Romans 10:9).
Now pray, confess that you are a
sinner, ask God to save you, and receive
Christ as your Saviour.
