Games bid ‘irresponsible’

AS A ratepayer I very much
oppose the idea of hosting a
Commonwealth Games.
It all sounds very grand but
it is assuming a lot to think
other towns in the South
Island would let Christchurch
their facilities.
If it went ahead who would
have to pay any extra costs?
The ratepayers – some of
whom already struggle to pay
these, and at the moment we
don’t know what they will be
for this year.

The red flag has been
hoisted, first from Canada
and then from Australia.
Commonsense has prevailed.
Local politicians need to
do the same and respectfully
withdraw any idea that a small
city in comparison could
afford to host these games.
Fifty years ago Christchurch
hadn’t experienced Covid,
a major earthquake, cost
of living crisis and housing
shortages, so to lumber the
city with such terrible debt for
a couple of weeks’ function,
even by 2030, is irresponsible
to say the least.
If we can’t afford to pay
higher rates now, that won’t
change in six years.

these cameras keep us safe,
but they are merely a tool that
must be used if they are to

all these cameras if they are
not being used? How are we
to have trust in the police if
they can’t explain the steps
that have been taken in an
investigation?
Are children not safe
to walk to school alone
anymore?
