Thursday February 1 2024 The Star • By Will Evans HIGH DROWNING figures have prompted Canterbury Rugby League to offer a free swimming lesson programme for children. The programme is a collaboration between CRL and UP Foundation, which supports families to participate in community-led activities by facilitating free activities. Water Safety New Zealand found there were 90 preventable drownings across the country in 2023, higher than the 10-year average of 83. Said CRL chief executive Malcolm Humm: “The initiative is based around Water Safety New Zealand’s annual drowning statistics, where the data is clear Malcolm Humm that Māori and Pasifika are over-represented in preventable drownings. “As a sport where 75 per cent of its membership is from the Māori or Pasifika community, Canterbury Rugby League believes we have a responsibility to support our rugby league community in learning life skills and keeping our people safe.” Any eight-year-old registered with a CRL club this year will receive free swimming lessons during terms 2 and 3. The programme has been extended to nine-year-olds in some areas and at smaller clubs. The programme is supported by the Waimakariri and Selwyn district councils as well as the city council. “This programme also aligns with our 2023-26 Strategic Plan, where a key goal is that ‘our membership develops holistically through the support of CRL personal development programmes’,” Humm said. “We recognise that, yes, we are the sport of rugby league, and we deliver as such – however, we have a wider responsibility to support and enhance the lives of our people. This initiative is very much in line with this goal. “Having UP Foundation support CRL’s campaign to get this under way has been significant – without them this wouldn’t be able to happen. We also acknowledge the support of Rātā Foundation, who have supported both Canterbury Rugby League and UP Foundation to deliver free swimming lessons to our community.” The goal is for every kid playing rugby league in Canterbury to have access to free swimming lessons.” When asked about clubs’ uptake of the opportunity, Humm said they have jumped at the chance and see it as a real benefit to their membership. Humm said as well as equipping youngsters with potentially life-saving skills, the initiative could also lead to vocational opportunities in the future, including roles as swim instructors and lifeguards. NEWS 9 Remediation work to start at Godley Head ASBESTOS remediation work at popular heritage site Godley Head will start this month. Work is due to begin on Wednesday and the campsite area and historic gun emplacements is due to reopen to the public in June. The campsite area and Lighthouse Cottage was closed before Easter 2021 after unsafe levels of asbestos were found in the gravel roads on site. This prompted wider testing which discovered asbestos contamination at the gun emplacement. Large trucks and trailers will be using the section of Summit Rd leading to Godley Head for the duration of the works. A Department of Conservation spokesperson said the section of road from Evans Pass to the Godley Head carpark should be avoided during working hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Walking and mountain biking tracks in the area will generally remain open, but some short detours and brief temporary closures to some sections may be in place. Extra care will need to be taken if crossing the road. Sorry we’re in your way New water pipes on Memorial Ave We’re replacing old underground pipes on Memorial Avenue between Ilam Road and Roydvale Avenue. To do this work quickly we need to reduce Memorial Avenue to one lane in both directions around our work sites. Expect delays at peak times. We’re also working in the area upgrading roads, including the Nor’West Arc cycleway, between Memorial Avenue and Ilam Fields. There will be lane closures around our worksite. Detours will be in place. We know roadworks are disruptive for you, so our contractors are working on these projects at the same time so we can get out of your way sooner. All work has been planned to keep traffic flowing.
