Artist faithful to seafaring tradition

He discovered 16 of the
28-strong crew managed to scale
the rigging, clamber onto a cliff
face and climb to safety.
The castaways defied starvation
before being rescued that
November after surviving on
12,000 mollyhawk chicks, seals,
plant roots and seaweed.
“It’s a great story, the rescue
and how they came to survive,”
said Milne, who was asked to
recreate Dundonald’s imminent
demise by a Department of
Conservation employee tasked
with monitoring bird life on
Auckland Island.
Milne also delved into the
exploits of Felix Graf von
Luckner’s exploits, captain of the
German raider SMS Seeadler
during World War 1.
Known as Der Seeteufel (Sea
Devil), von Luckner oversaw
the sinking of 14 Allied ships in
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
before he was arrested in Fiji
and sent to prisoner of war
camps in Auckland’s Waitemata
Harbour and Ripapa Island off
Lyttelton.
Von Luckner prided himself
on the bloodness nature of his
operations, with only one enemy
sailor perishing during his raids.
“He was quite a gentleman,
he’d take them all off the ship
and then he’d sink it,” Milne said.

President Kennedy, a PT boat
captain in the Pacific during
World War 2, also appreciated
the historical aspect of
scrimshaw, resurrecting interest
in the art when he placed the
best of his collection on his desk
inside the Oval Office.
After Kennedy was shot dead
in 1963 his widow Jacqueline
reportedly slipped a treasured
piece into his coffin prior to
internment at Arlington National
Cemetery.
“JFK kicked off the popularity,”
said Milne, who laments
curiosity has now waned.
There are still modern-day
scrimshanders active in Lahaina,
on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
There is also a community in San
Francisco.
However, once CITES
was introduced in the USA,
scrimshaw could not be legally
transferred interstate.
“I don’t see a big future in
it,” said Milne, citing another
disadvantage.
“I don’t think it’ll carry on
in this form because when the
ivory’s gone, it’s gone.”
