Correspondence from the membership indicates dissatisfaction with this policy. RESIGNATIONS: Ann Stockton, Chairman of the Board, reported with regret the resignations of Dr. John Blyth and Renee Blyth from the Board of Directors. Legal council points out that vacancies can only be filled by the Board of Directors and that there is no legal requirement to bring the Board to full strength. Since a quorum of the Board cannot be readily assembled, he advises leaving these vacancies unfilled until the next election. COMMITTEES: The President reported her reluctant acceptance of the resignation of Marcel Grandjany as Chapter Chairman and presented the name of Charles Kleinsteuber for approval as the new Chapter Chairman. This was unanimously approved. The following Committee Chairmen were also approved: Publicity-Kathryn Julye Finance-Dorothy Nardi The President also reported that the Membership Committee is composed of Marion Bannerman-Chairman, Jane Anne Carpenter and Katherine Corkrey. The Finance Committee is composed of Dorothy Nardi-Chairman, Gertrude Peterson and Jo Anne Ford. The Chapter Committee is composed of Charles Kleinsteuber Chairman, Julia Louise Herrmann and Patti Lieb. 1969 CONFERENCE: The President reported that .Eileen Malone is finalizing the plans for the 1969 Conference in Rochester. Accomodations will be available on the Eastman campus. The Banquet has been arranged at the Memorial Art Gallery with Robert Maxwell as featured artist. There will be two workshops, a solo recital and a chamber music concert, as well as the finals of the National Competition. 1970 CONFERENCE: The Executive Committee will welcome invitations from local Chapters desiring to host the 1970 Conference. Written invitations should be addressed to the President, Catherine Gotthoffer, 223 S. Arden Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90004. A decision on the place of meeting will be made by the Board of Directors and reported at the next Conference. 24 Invitations should be submitted by June 1, 1969. They should be accompanied by general information regarding facilities and housing. FALL 1968 JOURNAL: There was discussion of the unfortunate delay in the arrival of the Fall 1968 issue due to printing and mailing difficulties. Investigations are being made in Los Angeles and Fort Worth to locate a new printer to remedy this situation. NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION MAILING PERMIT: Suzanne Balderston reported that there would be considerable savings in purchasing a non-profit organization mailing permit for future bulk mailings. She was authorized to apply for the permit with a Santa Barbara address, since all mailings except the Journal will emanate from there. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Suzanne Balderston, Secretary BURMESE HARP In the first issue of the Journal was given an account of a lecture-recital played on the Burmese harp by Mrs. Murial Williamson at Asia House in New York City, February 21st, 1967. Subsequently Mrs. Williamson gave a paper at the Eleventh Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology at New Orleans. The paper was revised and has been printed by the Institute of Ethnomusicology of the University of California at Los Angeles. It is titled The Construction and Decoration of One Burmese Harp, and describes in detail how the harp now in Mr. Williamson's possession was made for her in Burma. It is nicely illustrated with pictures showing each step in the construction. Mrs. Williamson's book makes quite interesting reading, not at all what one might expect in an Ethnomusicological paper, and manages to be scholarly and accurate as well. Most of all, it provides a look at harp making techniques that must be similar to those used in early Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Burmese harp is a beautiful instrument, fragile and sensitive, and in Mrs. Williamson it has for an exponent a charming and gracious lady. Appended to the article is a measurement of traditional tuning frequencies of a Burmese harp by her husband, Dr. R. C. Williamson. Now retired, he was Head Professor of Physics at the University of Florida and later Visiting Professor of Physics at the University of Mandalay. AMERICAN HARP JOURNAL
