Longueval, Somme, France.
Huia Lyonal Wyatt, a Lance
Sergeant in the Canterbury
Infantry Battalion, died earlier
in The Great War (1914-18). The
23-year-old was shot in the head
on June 21 at Gallipoli and died
the following day on the hospital
ship Gascon. He was buried at
sea in Anzac Cove and is also
memorialised at Lone Pine
Cemetery.
Wyatt, who left his house at
Taylors Mistake to his sweetheart
Hazel Davies, had his identity
disc and two of his three medals
on display at New Brighton
Museum, the suburb where he
grew up.
Alfred James Francis Varney
and Wilfred Henry Dean both
served in the Canterbury Infantry
Regiment, 1st Battalion, and
died four days apart in October
1916 on the Western Front in
Belgium.
Varney, 29, died as a Sergeant
in the Canterbury Infantry, 1st
Battalion, and is one of 34,931
casualties remembered at the
Tyne Cot Memorial.
Private Dean was 21-years-old
when he died of wounds and was
laid to rest in Nine Elms British
Cemetery.

Richard Butler, a Private in the
New Zealand Medical Corp, succumbed
to illness in Belgium on
December 14, 1917, aged 25. He
is buried at the Wimereux Communal
Cemetery in France.
English-born New Zealand
Entrenching Battalion Private
James Brown, 29, returned to
his homeland in early 1918 and
was killed in action in northern
France on April 16. His name is
included at the Messines Ridge
(New Zealand) memorial in
Belgium.
Private Douglas Hodgson from
the New Zealand Medical Corps
survived the war only to be killed
in England when he was struck
by a train on May 21, 1919. The
30-year-old is buried in Brookwood
Military Cemetery, Surrey.
While the club’s WW1 dead
fought on land, their WW2
counterparts met their fates in
contrasting theatres of war.
Frank Wakefield Upton, a
Flight Sergeant with the Royal
Air Force, was a bomb aimer
on a Stirling when the aircraft
was shot down during a raid
over Denmark on April 21, 1943.
The 28-year-old is buried in the
Graveland Cemetery, Esbjerg.

Fellow RAF airman Thomas
Harold Hatchard joined Taylors
Mistake from Wellington, where
he was a member of the Lyall Bay
Surf Club.
The 31-year-old is presumed
to have died on September 4,
1943, when the Lancaster bomber
he was piloting failed to return
from a mission over the German
capital, Berlin.
Stanley Lange Kingdon, 24,
was aboard the HMS Neptune
as a Royal New Zealand Naval
Volunteer Reserve able seaman
when the light cruiser struck several
mines in the Mediterranean
and sank off Tripoli, Libya, on
December 19, 1941.
There was only one survivor
from a crew of 766.
Philip Brabham Levy, a Major

in the New Zealand Artillery, 4
Field Regiment, was serving in
Egypt when killed in action on
July 24, 1942, aged 35.
Lieutenant David Powell
Lindsay, 37, of the 26 Infantry
Battalion, who represented New
Zealand at swimming at the
1928 Olympics in Amsterdam,
was killed along with several
members of his platoon when
they were struck by a shell while
fighting in Italy on December 12,
1943.
Frank Griffith Bristed was the
club’s first – and oldest – WW2
casualty when the 40-year-old
Private in 20 Infantry Battalion
died of wounds on May 21,
1941, while stationed in Egypt.
He is buried in the Cairo War
Cemetery.
