Restoration project
By SHELLEY TOPP
The WaimakaririBiodiversity Trust is
leading atwohectarewetland restoration
project at Saltwater Creek.
The twoyear project is being run in
conjunction with the Japaneseowned,
Seftonbased mediumdensity fibreboard
manufacturer Daiken New Zealand.
Daiken will fund plants, fencing,
maintenance and public access for the
project.
The company suggested the project
during ameeting with the Sefton
Saltwater Creek Catchment Group in
November 2022.
The wetlands site is upstream from
where aspill occurred from the Daiken
factory into the creek last September.
The restorationproject has also
received a$15,600 grant from the
Waimakariri Water Zone's action fund,
which has funded initial investigations by
an ecologist and hydrologist to determine
site conditions.
Their reports are due later this month.
Atrust spokesperson says that Daiken
has already hosted avisit to the site, which
is on Daikenownedland, from ‘‘keen
AshleyRakahuri Primary School students
who are incorporating the wetland project
into their Enviroschools programme’’.
Trust coordinator Lucy Barltrop held a
stream exploration day last November for
the students.
The first restoration planting days are
scheduled for this autumn.
