Council adopts Integrated Transport
Strategy
Growth, freight efficiency, road safety, modechoice,
and emissions reductions were key aims of
Moving Forward: Waimakariri Integrated Transport
Strategy (ITS) adopted by Waimakariri District
Council last week.
The Council voted to adopt the new strategy last
week, that seeks to achieve avision that ‘It is safe,
easy and sustainable to journey towhere we want
to go.’
The final ITS’s Key Moves are:
• Create awell-connected multi-modal District
• Integrate land use and transport tounderpin
higher density living in urban areas
• Design the transport network for the efficient
movement of freight
• Deliver asafe transport system for everyone
• Support alternative travel choices.
Mayor Dan Gordon says often when discussing
transport, it’s easy to focus onprojects instead
of looking at what weneed toachieve the best
outcomes for our District.
“The engagement process in putting together the
ITS was great because itinvolved listening to all
different types of residents and transport users.
“As agrowth District, Waimakariri’s transport
system is going tocontinue to be under increasing
pressure. Balancing the needs of all our network
users, whilst working towards achieving long-term
sustainable and safe transport improvements, isa
difficult task.”
