Afitting reminder of past festivals
The Foothills of Mid
Canterbury are rich in minerals
and for many years asmall
group of residents from the
area ran avery successful
Minerals to Arts festival.
The last of the festivals was
held in 2008.
There were plans to hold
another in 2010 but with the two
previous festivals having run at
aloss it was decided not to hold
afestival.
Minerals to Arts committee
member Kate Totty said the
loss of two of serving
presidents, the late Jo Acland
and Lesley Brown, contributed
to the decision we made not to
organise another festival.
❛It is very
appropriate we have
taken amineral and
turned it into an art
with the making the
wooden table.❜
—Kate Totty
The money from previous
festivals sat in the bank account
with the hopes that in the
future, younger members of the
district may plan and hold
another festival which would
bring visitors to the area and
show case the local attractions.
It’s been over adecade and
with no festivals held it was
decided to spend the money
from the previous festivals.
Alarge picnic table and
seats have been installed on
the Staveley Green, next to the
Staveley Store.
‘‘We are thrilled with it, it
looks great. The men from the
area are yet to concrete it into
place but that will happen
shortly,’’ Totty said.
‘‘It is very appropriate we
have taken amineral and
GIFT: The new table picnic table
for the Staveley Green given by
the Minerals to Art Committee
including (from left) Lorna Dent,
Sara Gallagher, Kate Totty and
Christina Humm.
turned it into an art with the
making the wooden table,’’
Totty said.
The remaining money will
be used to put something on
the Village Green in Mt
Somers in the future.
The two fixtures will
provide areminder of the very
successful festivals that were
run to promote the foothills
area, and educate the public
on the minerals to be found in
the foothills and the
attractions to see and visit in
the area.
Death and
paperwork
workshops
If we know death is near, what should we
do in terms of our bank accounts? What if
there is asudden death what happens to
loans and money in bank accounts, term
deposits and other accounts?
How do we find out if afamily member
had life insurance, when does that get paid
out and to whom?
How do we get access to funeral cover
money from the insurer?
The session will be on February 28 from
