18 Ashburton NEWS Courier, February 22, 2024 www.ashburtoncourier.co.nz Homecoming forair force band members DELLWYN.MOYLAN @ashburtoncourier.co.nz The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band is tuned up and ready to entertain Mid Canterbury crowds with a worldclass performance. The band will perform at the Ashburton Event Centre on March 1. It will be aspecial performance for two band members formerly from Ashburton Flight Sergeant Ben Robertson who leadsthe band as its bandmaster, and Corporal Byron ‘Buzz’ Newton who plays euphonium. Music flows through the veins of these two talented musicians who both started as members of the Ashburton Silver Band. Robertson said it will be great to be back in Ashburton playing. ‘‘I haven’t played in the new theatre as it has been fifteen years since the band has played in Ashburton. Iamlooking forward to playing in the theatre as well as playing in front of friends and family,’’ Robertson said. ‘‘I always wanted to play in a military band. Iamvery fortunate to have had the opportunity to play in two such bands. Iwas inspired to join the New Zealand Army Band in 2003 by the then drum major of the band and fellow Ashburton Silver Band member Andrew Beckley. “I’m really excited to be bringing such atalented group of musicians on ahomecoming of sorts,” he said. “It’s great to be able to show off the awesomeversatility of the RNZAF Band.” When not conducting the band, Robertson plays trombone. Ben Robertson Byron Newton “In our concert Ihavethe added bonus in that Iget to play abasstrombone solo on Jimmy Webb’s ‘Wichita Lineman’, a pretty nostalgic pop tune.” While starting on the cornet he has progressed through several instruments. Most of the band are part timers with other jobs but he, and two others, are full time members. After studying trombone at undergraduate level in Wellington and then at postgraduate level in London, Robertson returned to Wellington in 2014 to join the MUSICAL TREAT: The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band in performance. RNZAF Band and was appointed bandmaster in 2018. ‘‘Being part of the aband is amazing and you get to travel around the world attending amazing events. There have been several highlights of my career including playing at tattoos in Scotland and Brussels, playing for the King’s coronation and leading the band at the100th anniversary service for Anzac DayatAnzac Cove.’’ Along with his duties with the band, Robertson undertakes other musical works such as conducting with the Fellowship of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. For his services to the New Zealand Defence Force, Robertson has been awarded a long service medal. Fellow band member, principal euphonium player Byron ‘Buzz’ Newton grew up surrounded by honeybees in Mid Canterbury which lead to his nickname. After two years of working as abee keeper for his father Derek Newton, who owns TranzAlpine Honey, he decided to focus on becoming afulltime musician. He is now one of the world’s top euphonium performers and aleading figure in brass education in New Zealand. After graduating from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Music and a postgraduate diploma with distinction from the New Zealand School of Music in euphonium performance, Newton accepted ascholarship to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He returned to New Zealand in 2012 and has been in high demand as asoloist, teacher, and freelance musician throughoutAustralasia. He holds the position of principal euphonium and assistant musical director with the Wellington Brass Band. He is an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music. ‘‘Those attending our concert are in for areal treat. The band’s performance will be a variety, areal liquorice allsorts. From big band to bag pipes, marches to musical theatre, drumlines to overtures and classical to country, showcasing the instrumental versatility and talent of atruly professional military band,’’ Robertson said. Ashburton Christian school student Joshua Holland and Ashburton College student Harvey Hyde, of Holland and Hyde Film, bought food and, along with their school mates, helped cook ameal for families staying at Ronald McDonald House. ‘‘Ithought it was really exciting, because I like cooking but it also felt good to be able to do that for Ronald McDonald House Charities, because they're doing agood thing by not making families pay for food, ’’ Joshua said. ‘‘We got acard signed from some of the families.The families we served facetoface were being very nice to us,’’ he said. He said they had been full of praise for the dinner itself, consisting of mince and nachos and coleslaw, followed by delicious ice cream. Ronald McDonald House is devoted to helping children and their families in need of treatment for example cancer, emotional health, and surgery by giving them free, rooms to stay in. Joshua and Harvey said they hoped to do the same again at the end of this year. To buy the food they used money raised at movie evenings, showing movies made by Holland and Hyde Film. ‘‘We have some fundraising ideas for 2024 like amovie night, sausage sizzle or acombined school dress up day in 60s clothing or 80s, for Ashburton College, Ashburton Christian School and Mount Hutt College,’’ Joshua said.

The last of the festivals was held in 2008. There were plans to hold another in 2010 but with the two previous festivals having run at aloss it was decided not to hold afestival. Minerals to Arts committee member Kate Totty said the loss of two of serving presidents, the late Jo Acland and Lesley Brown, contributed to the decision we made not to organise another festival. ❛It is very appropriate we have taken amineral and turned it into an art with the making the wooden table.❜ —Kate Totty The money from previous festivals sat in the bank account with the hopes that in the future, younger members of the district may plan and hold another festival which would bring visitors to the area and show case the local attractions. It’s been over adecade and with no festivals held it was decided to spend the money from the previous festivals. Alarge picnic table and seats have been installed on the Staveley Green, next to the Staveley Store. ‘‘We are thrilled with it, it looks great. The two fixtures will provide areminder of the very successful festivals that were run to promote the foothills area, and educate the public on the minerals to be found in the foothills and the attractions to see and visit in the area. Death and paperwork workshops Hospice Mid Canterbury and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury are offering a series of free lunchtime presentations on practical matters when someone dies. Aside from the grieving involved when a partner, parent or other family member dies, there are lots of practical matters to consider. How do we access or close bank accounts of someone who dies? What happens to the Sky account and power bill that'sintheir name? If we know death is near, what should we do in terms of our bank accounts? What if there is asudden death what happens to loans and money in bank accounts, term deposits and other accounts?
