Bags roll in for Grace appeal<br />

<strong>2024</strong> Love Grace Appeal in Mid<br />
Canterbury.<br />
The international domestic<br />
violence appeal is held each<br />
year in memory of Grace<br />
Millane, a21yearold United<br />
Kingdom resident who was<br />
strangled to death while on<br />
holiday in Auckland in 2018 by<br />
her Tinder date.<br />
The appeal began in New<br />
Zealand in 2020. It collects new<br />
and good quality preloved<br />
hand bags filled with useful<br />
supplies for women escaping<br />
family violence.<br />
Aregular supporter of the<br />
appeal, Waszczak noticed the<br />
BNZ bank was not coordinating<br />
it in <strong>Ashburton</strong> this<br />
year as it had done in previous<br />
years. She decided to put her<br />
hand up.<br />
Waszczak said it was the right<br />
thing to do.<br />
‘‘Giving to such agreat cause<br />
is agood feeling,’’ she said.<br />
People are asked to support<br />
the appeal by filling the<br />
handbags with new items such<br />
as tooth paste and brush,<br />
shower gel, shampoo and<br />
conditioners, deodorants and<br />
sanitary products.<br />
Extra luxury items like<br />
wipes, tissues, plasters, soap,<br />
hand gel, lip balm, brushes,<br />
combs, cosmetics, hair<br />
accessories, torches, gloves,<br />
notebooks, glasses, pens, sun<br />
glasses and jewellery are<br />
welcome additions.<br />
‘‘Ideally bags would come in<br />
with items included, but bags<br />
or items on their own can be<br />
given as well,’’ Waszczak said.<br />
The bags are given to Mid<br />
South Island Women's Refuge<br />
and Family Services in Timaru.<br />
Their services cover the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> District.<br />
Refuge comanager Tepora<br />
Whaturia said clients were<br />
filled with gratitude when they<br />
received abag.<br />
‘‘They are given out faster<br />
than they come in. Over the<br />
three appeals we have<br />
received hundreds of bags,’’<br />
Whaturia said.<br />
‘‘Each bag comes with aLove<br />
Grace card which does give us<br />
an opportunity to talk to the<br />
women about Grace’s story.’’<br />

service sees about 1200<br />

SPEED BUMPS<br />
New speed bumps on Melcombe<br />
St will be painted next week.<br />
Motorists have complained about<br />
being jolted in their cars while<br />
driving over them. However, an NZ<br />
Transport Agency Waka Kotahi<br />
spokesperson said ‘‘there is no<br />
excuse for anyone to be surprised<br />
by them’’. This was because the<br />
speed bumps had both temporary<br />
roadwork signs and permanent<br />
25km/h signs. Roadwork signs,<br />
with exclamation marks, alongside<br />
temporary road cones, would be<br />
removed when the speed bumps<br />
were painted with line markings.<br />
‘‘One of our staff test drove the<br />
speed bumps last week and had<br />
no problems with his semi-sports<br />
style vehicle. People need to slow<br />
to 25km/h,’’ the spokesperson<br />
said.<br />
BOMB THREAT<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> College re-opened on<br />
Tuesday with apolice presence<br />
after abomb threat closed the<br />
school on Monday. The school<br />
was following police advice to<br />
keep the school closed after a<br />
threatening phone message was<br />
left on aschool answerphone. The<br />
closure followed students being<br />
evacuated from the college on<br />
Wednesday morning last week,<br />
which was also after athreatening<br />
phone message. The two incidents<br />
were not related. A<strong>22</strong>-year-old<br />
man was arrested at his home<br />
after the threat on Wednesday.<br />
Police said they would not discuss<br />
details of their inquiry into the<br />
second incident in order to protect<br />
the investigation.<br />
