Eastland-Fairfield<br />

at DECA Regionals<br />

On Jan. 30, students from the Eastland-<br />

Fairfield Career & Technical Schools<br />

Marketing & Logistics satellite program<br />

presented their projects at the DECA district<br />

competition. Seven of those students<br />

will represent their program at the DECA<br />

regional competition in March.<br />

The Marketing & Logistics class, which<br />

is housed at <strong>Groveport</strong> Madison High<br />

School, featured three individual firstplace<br />

finishers and one first-place team at<br />

the district competition. Two individuals<br />

also tallied second-place finishes, as well.<br />

District champions are senior Eva<br />

Walton (marketing communications), junior<br />

Jalia Clark (principle of business management<br />

and administration), junior Riley<br />

Pettay (principle of hospitality), and the<br />

team of seniors Kyger Weston and Trinity<br />

Tinney (hospitality team), all of whom<br />

attend <strong>Groveport</strong> Madison High School.<br />

Joining them at the regional conference<br />

will be <strong>Groveport</strong> Madison seniors Kristian<br />

Dougherty (automotive service)<br />

Richie Saelim (personal financial literacy),<br />

who placed second in their respective<br />

events.<br />

Juniors Isaiah Hayes (<strong>Groveport</strong><br />

Madison) and Marquis Crump<br />

(Pickerington Central) also medaled, taking<br />

third in the Sports and Entertainment<br />

team event. They will serve as alternates<br />

at Regionals.<br />

The regional conference will be held at<br />

the Hyatt Regency in Columbus on March<br />

8-9. Students will use the time leading up<br />

to the DECA regional conference to fine<br />

tune their projects for the competition.<br />

Eastland-Fairfield<br />

BPA state qualifiers<br />

Students from Eastland Career Center will<br />

compete at the <strong>2024</strong> Business Professionals of<br />

America Ohio State Leadership Conference.<br />

Students earned first-place honors in their<br />

respective events during the regional competition<br />

held in January.<br />

Local highlights include: Truth Brooks<br />

(Canal Winchester), Ethan Carmichael<br />

(Canal Winchester), Jacob Caron<br />

(Hamilton Township), and Dayanara<br />

Channakhon (<strong>Groveport</strong> Madison) comprised<br />

the first place Computer Animation<br />

440 team, which will represent ECC at<br />

States. The members of the winning<br />

Administrative Support Team include<br />

<strong>Groveport</strong> Madison juniors Reagan Hodge<br />

and Mackenzie Tyrrell from the Medical<br />

Office program. Matthew Kuhn, a junior<br />

from Teays Valley studying Programming<br />

& Software Development, will round out<br />

the team that is heading to States.<br />

Students who advance to the state competition<br />

will meet on March 7 at the Hyatt<br />

Regency to vie for tops in Ohio as well as<br />

the opportunity to compete at the BPA<br />

National Leadership Conference. The<br />

awards ceremony be at the Greater<br />

Columbus Convention Center.<br />

Women’s Self-Defense<br />

The <strong>Groveport</strong> Police will conduct a<br />

Women’s Self-Defense class at the<br />

<strong>Groveport</strong> Recreation Center, 7370<br />

<strong>Groveport</strong> Road, on March 5 from 6-8 p.m.<br />

GM teacher wins grant<br />

<strong>Groveport</strong> Madison Schools’ Asbury<br />

Elementary School kindergarten teacher<br />

Lauren Foley is the <strong>2024</strong> award winner of<br />

the Bonnie Chambers Grant. This grant<br />

supports educators of English Language<br />

Arts, and will allow her to purchase $2,500<br />

worth of classroom books. She will receive<br />

her award at the upcoming OCTELA<br />

Conference in March. The Bonnie<br />

Chambers Grant is designed to help teachers<br />

that use quality literature in their<br />

classrooms to promote literacy.<br />

Libraries celebrate<br />

Black History Month<br />

The Columbus Metropolitan Library<br />

will celebrate Black History Month with<br />

virtual and in-person programs in<br />

<strong>February</strong>. Customers of all ages can attend<br />

concerts and author talks and participate<br />

in activities, dancing and more.<br />
