SUMMER FUN: Pupils and caregivers from Te Raekura
Redcliffs School challenged themselves to paddle about
1.5km across the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.
Paddling pupils’ Sunday fun-day
A FLOTILLA of paddleboards
and kayaks were a noticeable
addition to the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary on Sunday, as
Te Raekura Redcliffs School held
its second Paddle to Kura.
The outing was organised by
school parents, Darren Fidler and
Abby Moore, as a way of
connecting families in the
school community.
Pupils left the Christchurch
Yacht Club at 2pm
with their parents and
paddled about 1.5km to
the Beachville Rd jetty
opposite the school.
Said principal Nick
Nick
Leith
Leith: “We’re extremely
fortunate to have such a
strong connection to the
resources in our local
area and community.”
Leith said the event
made the most of
school’s unique coastal
location.
“Our school community
is really lucky to have members
in their community who
are willing to create unique and
authentic opportunities for us to
come together, demonstrating
what an awesome place Redcliffs
is in which to learn and live,” said
Leith.
Keen teachers and staff joined
the pupils on their voyage. There
were well-earned ice creams
ready on arrival.
A picnic was then held in the
sun, celebrating a successful start
to the school year.
Sumner surf lifesavers were in
attendance during the paddle in
case of emergency, but parents
and supervisors were responsible
for keeping the pupils safe.
